Thank you for this! Something that I found to be very helpful is to focus on the positive interactions we have with patients. We often times get caught up on the stress of paper work, difficult pts / families, and the liability. However, I found that when I help a patient improve their mental health and build coping skills so they can thrive in school / work / etc. it is very gratifying and helps reduce my own burnout!

Sarwar, those are some great points! When you start to see your patients become hopeful for the first time in a while, it may be the best feeling ever 🙏

How do you set boundaries with psych patients? What do you do to not let your mental state / emotions be affected? In my RN clinical for psych, I actually met a couple of psych nurses who were the patients there to receive therapy for depression! They chose a clinic far away from their community so that no one would know... I assumed that they had absorbed too much negative energy from the job working with unstable patients and then they needed help as well. That experience had such an impact on me that I ruled out the field of psych when I became an RN. I am now reconsidering this career path after watching your videos. Thanks for sharing!

This is such an important topic and I appreciate you bringing it up. I'm still a PMHNP student but I already know the only way I'll still love my job in 20 years will be to prioritize free time. Working in an inpatient psych facility for years helped me to see how many healthcare workers were burned out yet they continued to punish themselves with overtime hours. If we can't find pleasure and enjoyment outside of work how can we come to work and provide effective care? I think your a great role model for someone practicing a good work-life balance and we should all aim for the same equilibrium you've achieved. Keep up the great content. Thanks again!

Thank you Will, I have seen burnout way too much. It's easy to see why when you check what kind of workdays they are working.

Thank you Sara! I have seen way too many providers burned out and unhappy throughout my time as a student and provider. This was actually my biggest fear as a new graduate.

How did you avoid burnout when you were working as an RN on a psych unit? Also did you notice that certain specialization cause more burnout than others? I remember you saying that you have worked in several different specializations. Thank you!

Hello Noremac, I think after my 2nd year as an RN in Inpatient Psych I started to feel burned out. I dropped down my hours to part time when I was in the Psych NP program which really helped. I think it also depends on where you are located. There are some inpatient units that actually only take voluntary patients which I can imagine would be a lot less stressful 👍
