I am super interested in getting my PMHNP. I have pediatric and OR experience. I can’t find any outpatient psych opportunities as a RN! Do you think starting PMHNP without experience is appropriate?

Thanks for the update, as an aspiring future pmhnp, I look forward to these vids. I have 2 questions. 1. How long after graduation did you know you wanted to open your own practice? 2. I'm still a little confused as to the difference between pmhnp and a psychiatrist, do you do more meds management and they do more therapy?
@ThePsychNP
@ThePsychNP 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Jayvon. I have thought about having my own practice once I graduated but knew that I needed at least one year working in an outpatient setting to make sure I was able to learn and build my skills up and be confident to have my own practice. This is also individual to the person, someone may feel ready after 2 years, 5 years.. it depends. A Psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner will basically have the same job role and responsibility. We will mainly focus on prescribing medication and can provide psychotherapy as needed. Generally a therapist, psychologist, or counselor will provide therapy

May I ask why/how would psych NP has a residency? Is it paired with your program or you found your own residency program after graduating? I know that most np schools have no residency like the medical schools. Some may have optional fellowships. IMO I wouldnt feel confident if I were thrown on the floor running w/o residency and start practice full scale right after np school.

I applied for a master's FNP program (waiting to hear back for acceptance) When I am done I want to get into psychiatry that is my passion. So this isn't a dedicated program for psych NP so I would like to ask what do I need to do in order to get into this field after the program is it just s certification or is there another program I have to take.

Hi I have a question! So I was wondering if I have practiced as a LPC for a few years but what to further my education/try a different path professionally, would becoming a Psych NP after working as a therapist be a good idea/worth it? Thank you!
@ThePsychNP
@ThePsychNP 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Zullemah, I would say the great thing about being a psych np versus being an LPC is that it gives you an outlet where you can still do therapy and prescribe medication when needed. I think someone like you with such a great background would make a great psych np

Hi there! I’ve been considering applying my this year for a PMHNP program but need some advise, as I hear my hospitals program is super competitive to get into. I’ve been a nurse for about 2.5 years now and work on a epilepsy/neuro trauma PCU floor. I’m very confident in my skills as a neuro nurse, I frequently am in charge and have leadership opportunities on my floor, I love the PCU level patients and using my nursing skills and critical thinking, but feel like since I don’t have psych experience necessarily I’m at a disadvantage. We have an inpatient psych hospital that I can transfer to around the time I would be applying for the program, but was wondering what others thought? Being on a neuro floor we get a lot of our patients who have acute onset delirium, TBI’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, strokes, brain tumors, other crazy neurological disorders that we normally don’t see day to day. Is this experience going to help me? Or should I transfer?
@ThePsychNP
@ThePsychNP 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Lauren, I definitely think it would benefit you to work on an inpatient psych unit. I think the experience there is really invaluable also employers really will look for specific psych experience. I know that you are getting some psych experience on your work floor but you want to make sure you stand out from other job applicants!

Going off of what you mentioned about being so much more knowledgeable now than you were at the 6 month mark, do you ever look back at patients you have treated, and wish you could have treated them differently with the knowledge you now have? If so, do you ever feel any feelings of guilt knowing that a patient with a previously misdiagnosed/slightly incorrectly diagnosed illness could have been treated properly had you just had the knowledge you have at this moment? Just a random thought I had pop in my head.

Hi Christian, that's a great question. So I always have mentors and other psych nps and psychiatrists I know personally that helped me out if I needed it. If I was unsure, I would not prescribe or diagnose someone

I would like to know your thoughts on doing a one-year fellowship program versus going straight into an outpatient practice right out of school? Thank you!

Lori, I think that is an amazing opportunity to do a fellowship program out of school. You will learn so much, the outpatient practice will always be there 👍
@lorikistler8836
@lorikistler8836 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePsychNP Thank you for your response. I have received mixed views surrounding a fellowship program. I think knowing that the support and resources will be there that first year is a huge bonus within the fellowship program. The downside that I mostly hear is salary during fellowship programs is considerably lower than going straight out into outpatient or inpatient practice.
@ThePsychNP
@ThePsychNP 3 жыл бұрын
@@lorikistler8836 The salary will be considerably lower but you will be a stronger clinician. I think either opportunity works fine. If I would do it all over again, I would still choose working in an outpatient private practice

Do nurse practitioners have to be vaccinated? Not just Covid vaccine but MMR, hepatitis B, Dtap etc or could a nurse practitioner be exempt or exempt him or herself?
