It’s funny since there aren’t exactly any good main characters in the show, so of course people’s favorites are the bad guys. Only exceptions would be Mike, Saul, Kim and Howard and even Saul and Kim wouldn’t really be “good” people. The show also does a really good job of portraying Howard as a bad guy or just unlikeable despite him just being a victim and since people already know what happens to Mike and Gus and most of the others people don’t really have any other characters to like.

Lalo is my favorite character. Alpha male is every sense. I imagine if he didn't grow up in a family surrounded by criminal psychopaths and sociopaths, he would be graduating first in his class at Yale, or making Harvard Law Review and leading as CFO a Silicone Valley start up. In the last episodes of the 5th season, when those guys hired by Gus go to his house and try to kill him, he is very calm even when his life is in clear danger. He is hyper aware of his surroundings but he's not scared. He even uses that kid that works for him as a human shield. Later, in the 6th season, he kills a couple of his employees that, you can tell, really care for him. I would say that he doesn't even love his uncle, he respects the man Hector Salamanca is, but he doesn´t love him, he can't. Lalo is probably the best representation of a real psychopath.

Nah I don't think I agree with this. Lalo probably does whatever he can for survival, because that's what he's been trained to do and that's how he was brought up. But he does love his uncle, and the rest of his family. He's a Salamanca and they believe in "family is all". If he really didn't love his uncle or anyone else he wouldn't have bothered to come up north to run things, and to make efforts to take revenge for what happened to his uncle and his family. In fact, he wouldn't even have been working with his own family then, he would've set up his own cartel somewhere else. The Salamancas are for sure cold, cunning, evil, obviously. But one thing that's true for them is that familia es todo.

Lalo's reverence of Hector made me assume that Hector must have played a large role in the childhoods of every Salamanca we meet - Lalo, Tuco, and the Twins. That makes sense as to what these characters are like as adults, with the added layer of some sadness and pity for them. Everybody at Lalo's estate that he introduces to Nacho is an employee right? There is not a single family member living there, if I remember correctly. That also stood out to me.

Empathy and love for critters may stem from knowing that won't deceive or betray you. Lalo would know this on a gut level and have no trouble genuinely caring about an animal. It's interesting you view it that way because there's actually a subreddit where people with ASPD chat, and what you said pretty much is what many of them said about their feelings towards animals or their pets. While empathy for animals as a whole isn't quite there, the animals they do keep as pets, they say they have what they consider to be genuine love or affection for them (or what closest a person with their condition can define it as). A lot of their reasons being the animals won't disobey, betray, or challenge them.

Lalo does seem emotional about the death of Yolanda, his cook. He also seems to care about Hector. Does that fit his profile?
@brieschdude
@brieschdude 3 жыл бұрын
Good points. When looking at someone who is Anti-Social, the emotions/ feelings they experience in relation to others would be limited by their own self serving needs. The emotions are more based around themselves and what a relationship gives to they themselves, as opposed to how the relationship serves other people and what it means for them. To put that into context, he seems to care about Hector but primarily due to the fact that Hector has provided Lalo with much pleasure and fun in past times of his life. He is more concerned with what Hector provides for him , not so much what pain Hector is experiencing. This is somewhat evidenced by him not giving Hector his medication/juice provided by the nurse and instead switching it out for alcohol. He is only viewing things out of his own subjectivity. In regards to Yolanda and the other workers at his hacienda, it seems he is emotionally impacted by their deaths because people have been taken away from his life, which may cause anger and hatred. He now has lost people that have served a utility to his life. But due to his lack of empathy he can't take their experiences into consideration, he only knows what it means for himself. He can't empathize with the pain and suffering they experienced. All of his emotions/ feelings are contained within his own viewpoint, and can't compute how other people feel themselves. His emotions/ feelings are void of any empathy. Hope that makes sense.

This is somewhat evidenced by him not giving Hector his medication/juice provided by the nurse and instead switching it out for alcohol. He is only viewing things out of his own subjectivity." I read this situation very differently. Actually Lalo shows empathy towards Hector, in 2 scenes. When Hector is being given the juice, he changes it with alcohol, because he knows Hector will appreciate it more. I think he scorns the nursing home ways and knows Hector does not belong to that place. A second important moment is when Lalo leaves the nursing home, he turns around to watch Hector one last time and witnesses a nurse putting a party-hat on the head of Hector and bringing him towards other patients for a birthday party, everybody is singing. Lalo shows some compassion, he empathizes with Hector's situation who wouldn't have taken part with the party if he could have voiced his opinion. In this particular scene, the nurse is actually doing some "soft violence" towards Hector. She just assumes he will enjoy being with the other patients, but she does not give him any choice, nor does she asks him if he wants too. He could want to be left alone, watch TV or whatever. She could treat him with more delicacy, especially knowing he is fragile due to his condition. Her behavior is somewhat degrading. And Lalo witnesses that and shows compassion for a brief moment. About the greetings in the hacienda and the way he treats the young boy. I think he doesn't like him, maybe because he thinks he's too soft and immature (??). Later, when he sees smoke in the house, Lalo immediately assumes it's the boy who's smoking or doing something stupid... I dunno... Well, anyway, other than that, I agree Lalo is a psycho. :) I'm longing for the next season of BCS (it started out slow and a bit cheesy, and now it's strong and as good as BB) !

A psychopath doesn't necessarily like killing. He just doesn't feel any kind of remorse. Also psychopaths can love their family like parents, brothers... But they have a hard time trusting anyone outside that privileged circle. Actually they only like the people that are useful for what they want to achieve, if you're not useful to him, he could kill you and forget you ever existed. Actually, the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath has to do with emotions, empathy and conscience. A sociopath retains a degree of "normal" emotions, ability to empathize and an understanding of morals. However, these elements are weak and they will act despite them to serve their own interests first. A sociopath, for example, may like you and truly be angry with you for "forcing them to kill you" when you cross them. A psychopath won't think twice once they've decided to kill you. No remorse, no regret, nothing. If you performed some function for him, such as if you cooked his meals, he might miss THAT. But no feelings whatsoever for YOU. To that end, Nacho is just entertainment to him. You're right in that Lalo "values people who prove their worth"... their worth TO HIM. People only have as much value as what they do for him or give him. They have no value beyond that. Nacho's antics entertained him and he saw someone who would do stupid, dangerous things on his behalf. It didn't make him truly "like" Nacho as a human being. As far as "he's all about protecting the family", that has more to do with his ego and identity than any actual feelings or empathy for family members. It isn't that you don't mess with his family because he cares about them... you don't mess with his family because they are HIS family, they belong to him, it would be like keying his car. In fact, if they died in front of him in some freak accident, he wouldn't care one bit and would probably laugh at the situation. A simple way to view the difference is that a sociopath has LIMITED ability to empathize. A psychopath completely lacks empathy. A sociopath is more emotional, impulsive and reactive. A psychopath is cold, methodical, calculating and/or matter-of-fact about things. You will usually sense impending violence from a sociopath - violence is a last ditch method to control you. You won't see it coming from a psychopath. They'll smile, laugh, then slit your throat. Oddly, Tuco would be a better example of a sociopath. He cared about the henchman he beat up in the junkyard, trying to get Walt and Jesse to save him. He truly cared about his mother and his uncle Hector. Tuco's drug use, however, gives him psychotic episodes. His violence was pure rage. Remember, too, Tuco had a sense of "justice", which is what Jimmy/Saul played upon to save the lives of those 2 punk scam-artists. Though twisted and certainly limited, Tuco had a sense of morals, of "right and wrong". Lalo is a flat-out psychopath. While he visited Hector and reminisced with him, he would just as easily smother Hector with a pillow without any hesitation or remorse if it benefited him. The only thing that is "right or wrong" is whether he wants something (right) or not (wrong). Edit: One final note. It is true that a psychopath is more likely to be a sadist, taking pleasure in the suffering of others, as they lack any empathy whatsoever. But they don't have to be, it may not appeal to them. They could be turned off by violence/suffering, if they see it as "messy and inconvenient" or if it spoils their mood. Seeing someone suffer might annoy them - it would be like seeing a wilted flower or a rusted car, not as "pretty" as a blooming flower or shiny new vehicle. Similarly, a sociopath can certainly be a sadist but are less likely to be because they have a small degree of empathy for others.

I swear to god psychologists when talking about “disorders” just talk about different brain types that are inconvenient to the system in which we reside. “Self interested, protecting himself at all costs, low remorse low stress low anxiety, breaks the law” because society needs people who are docile, altruistic, remorseful, and obedient

It's just a way of categorizing. As a practicing clinician I try not to look at people through the lens of their diagnosis. Instead I attempt to use the diagnosis as a guide post for treatment. I also try not to view people this way in general, and although the Lalo and Gus videos are framed via a disorder, I don't plan to make any more videos based on a diagnostic categorization. And I agree, some people's brains are just wired a certain way. I am all for trying to work with people on an individual level and treating them based on their individual differences.

This is a bit philosophical, But Lalo's ability to remain happy, during negative events is actually a much more effective emotion. Emapthy through guilt and sadness, can be counter productive. It clearly shows that his mindset is powerful. in this show.
@brieschdude
@brieschdude 3 жыл бұрын
It may be effective, but I wouldn't go so far as saying remaining happy during negative events is healthy. If someone has died it may indicate a deeper issue if we remain "happy" during these events. Maybe a better way to describe what's effective is that we retain a positive outlook despite negative events. The issue with Lalo though, is that the character doesn't seem to feel empathy at any time or any place. As stated in the video, all his feelings come from a self referenced point of view. It doesn't matter what other people are feeling, he can only identify with his own feelings. That's what it means to lack empathy.

I find Sauls’s story arc less interesting than the cartel characters and Mike’s. I don’t like the twins much though. They seem like extras. Eladio is ready interesting because he is seemingly always in a good mood and has a way of ridiculing people like they are pathetic sort of how he did Hector when he couldn’t compete with Gus’s profits. He was playing with toys to demonstrate his disappointment and mocking him simultaneously. You’ve got to be scary to put Hector down like that and not worry about him snapping .

I liked the cousins in Breaking Bad, but they felt out of place in the more realistic world of BCS, it seemed forced. I know they split opinion in BB too, some found them too cartoonish. I think one season of runtime for them was just right, otherwise it'd be overkill and take away from their mysteriousness. The fact they don't speak much is probably in part due to them not being great actors, for Leonel it was his first gig. I think Mike's story arc would become less interesting if we were shown more than we are. I'd love to learn more about Gus, especially his upbringing in Chile (if that's where he's really from) but I also understood wanting to keep it secretive, true to his character.
@tajamulkhan75
@tajamulkhan75 2 жыл бұрын
that's the beauty of the show, if saul's arc wasn't shown then it would be overkill by showing other side, that's what so great about the show's writers, they know how to find balance and as you'll see both arcs will soon connect completely since it isn't fully connected as of now but on some level it is... similarly if just saul's arc was shown then that could also make it less interesting, obviously its called better call saul so saul shall become part of this cartel as lawyer it will be more about him, his character is very interesting to say the least , anyways, what my point is that i don't get it when some say they don't like that arc or this arc, don't watch the show if you don't like it no offense both are part of same story

@@primeoil4758 he's definitely a psychopath. Totally irreverent of the consequences of his criminality for everybody around him, even closest family members. Superficially charming and manipulative. Thrill-seeking and impulsive to an irrational degree. Looks at others only as sexual conquests or tools to advance his own career or boost his ego. Extensive criminal record going back to childhood. Grandiosity and megalomania (believes he can take on an international cartel with military and governmental ties with a small cadre of doubtful hired guns). Fearless in the face of shootouts, dismemberment, hangings, and lots of other shit that would cause others PTSD. Wildly abusive of drugs. The other lawbreaking drug dealers around him can't seem to account for any of the moves he makes because he's incapable of forming normal human attachments or thinking about the long-term consequences of his toxic masculine actions. When a Latin American narcotrafficker puts together a council of military and intelligence officials to help you all escape your shared problems, and you--a cold-blooded assassin who hasn't shown an ounce of morality in any of your dealings--blow away his chief hitman like it's some minor hiccup in the plan, because of a sudden eruption of 'moral feeling', it's pretty obvious you're detached from reality to a pretty insane degree.

What you can notice is you never see his kill coming. The twins don't hesitate to attack but you expect this of them and Tuco he gives out a lot of warning signs that he will kill you. Lalo his kills come out of nowhere, he disarms you with the ease he has then blasts you dead. He did this to Howard and guy at the store. When you think about it he may have adopted this from Hector. Hector too killed Max while Gus was talking and there was no warning whatsoever. I always thought the nephews all adopted a trait from Hector. Hector also started asphyxiating one of his nephews to teach the other a lesson ever so suddenly.

I personally feel like his character was more complex than that, while I would say he is without argument a physcopath in some cases and scenes these traits are shared with alot of criminals especially in the cartel, but physcopaths only make up 1 percent of the population, the amount of criminals to average people is probably closer to 40% to 60% ratio so saying there physcopaths doesn't exactly define them properly. these people have loved ones, family and friends but often commit horrendous crimes, I think we use the term physcopath so openly because we'd like to think we could never be like them and commit actions that are wrong or out of social norms but I think we're probably capable of things that we think only people like them are capable of.

i dont think he particularly gains pleasure from killing just anyone. the story about him and hector killing a guy mentioned that the guy had disrespected them, which is seemingly a big deal for people in organized crime. this lady didnt do anything to insult him, so he wouldnt feel any pleasure from hurting her imo. he was still totally willing to do it if it came to it (the scene shows him readying his gun when it looks like shes about to find him), and then once an opportunity to escape unnoticed presents itself, he takes it. i dont believe that was out of any mercy or regard for the woman, its simply more convenient for him to get out of there unnoticed, than killing someone unnecessarily

Just because someone does bad things does not mean they are a psychopath or sociopath. Goodfellas and the mob is a great example, you start off doing small things when you’re young for the mob and then slowly enter their world and eventually, killing is just part of it. Jordan Belfort said something interesting; once you cross the moral line, it keeps moving.

Kings and presidents have killed thousands and millions with their poor population cheering them on. Soldiers commit mass rape when left uncheck. Are we all sociopaths just because we do cruel acts? Lalo is already in the underworld alongside other violent murderers. He is in another world separate from ours. He's like a soldier for his cause in which he has earned MILLIONS...and is considered a legend. And...it's fun adventure. And ultimately, he lived this life since birth. He's used to it. @@dernierergenekon5234 sorry to hear that. Thank you. Was actually in question referring to the character she played in the series. The abuelita of Tuco. Seems so long ago now;).

11:00 if i may raise my hand here for a second yes I agree that psychological reading that youve made is valid but this is a place where I would put a little asterisk - Mexican culture is very much about being kek about everything in our customs, / theres a bit of an obscene friendlyness amongst people under certain context and with certain people and I wouldnt consider that sociopathic - only in that we know what lalo is capable of that colors this scene. WHAT I MEAN IS if you met more mexicans you might find this more normal LOL. i know that logic has a limit Sorry if that was worded kind of awkwardly
