@Esmour Mayne You don't have to think that, it's actually really normal for people like us to be silent and most feel like "awkward" but it's not. I can speak from experience, most nonsense it's useless and boring like you say, but when you talk to someone or someone talk with you about a "interesting" topic, it's actually like you're a professional speaker and even if you don't know much about the topic you feel really good to listen about others opinions. Don't worry, you aren't awkward, just selective of who and what to talk and i assure you: It feels awesome when you get the opportunity to really speak your mind ^-^

I agree. For the most part I don't like people. I don't like them because they have so much potential but they throw it all away, they are not really honest especially with themselves so therefore they feel diseased to an empath like me which is a huge repellant, they love to either be controlled or to control which I just don't vibe with, most have never heard of Maslow's pyramid much less even tasted self actualization so they think someone like me is strange because I want more from my life than they do, they ask for help but don't have the courage to change their life, they tear others down because they never reached their potential, they love drama because they are bored, they are afraid of EVERYTHING (this year and last are definitely an indicator of that) they are shallow because they are scared of going beneath the surface, they only acknowledge the material realm most of the time, they tend to focus on trivial issues and ignore the significant, many engage in peer pressure like a cult especially with the us vs them mentality, and most think with their hearts nevermind the fact that they were given a brain for this purpose. Feelings are for matters of the heart like compassion and bonding experiences. Yeah I like to steer clear of most people so I can create and live a more peaceful life with my husband. That way no drama gets in the way of our happiness. After all, at the end of the day my husband and our future is my world.

@@taramartinez3193 if you don’t like lots and lots of people and think that you are better than them and judge everyone you see whether a complete stranger or a family member by pointing out whatever is wrong with them and you are stronger cause you had the guts to make a decision comes from the fact that you are insecure about you and are reassuring yourself that you still are fine. I’m pretty much the same as you. I spend so much time alone with music, dancing, exercising, writing, and playing instruments when I’m done with my responsibilities for the day and i like it that way. I do miss going out with my friends sometimes but i’ve discovered that solitude along with creative freedom has been healthy for my mind rather than going out with a bunch of people, eating fast food, and feeling like i have to know the latest world trend because that’s all they talk about. I feel better about myself since i started taking care of my body and doing the things that i enjoy instead of posting stuff on facebook or instagram for people’s approval (it’s been actual YEARS since my last post and my friends think i’m a cavewoman). I seek for my own approval now and try to improve myself day by day. It feels great. What i got from solitude is a far greater high than loving somebody else. Loving myself and enjoying my own company. I do want to find love and be in a relationship, but i don’t think of it as my salvation anymore and that’s a relief.

i feel you all in this thread. i've been in this space for a long time now. 2010 when solitude was loneliness, the scariest of all. all i heard in silence was how utterly worthless and disposable and orphaned i was, perhaps to never belong anywhere. 2019 and now silence tells me of exciting journeys we're to take, that i am okay where i am today, as i am today; and on days when it seems nothing is happening and it is chaotic is the days much rearrangement is happening in layers deep within my unconscious. i want to be in a serious relationship now, with someone who is committed to growing and evolving together. the universe is telling me it is there for me, i first need to learn how to be unconditionally loving to myself first, coz unless i can love myself through good days and bad, it is foolishness to expect the same in a relationship.

I feel like I'm a little too comfortable with solitude. I find it harder to connect with other people, because often times the things I seek out are easily found when i contemplate and investigate those things alone. There are of course cases when a companion will rescue me from something in a way that proves community is more a benefit than a vice. And I do believe that it is a benefit ultimately. But man...being alone--having total freedom to my thoughts, my art, my writing, my prayers to God. No other time makes me feel more alive.

I relate hard. About 7 years ago I dropped out of college to become a musician and writer (it was a deep calling). I had to retreat into solitude for a number of reasons 1. To study the works of the greats, 2. To escape the putdowns of those whom I knew up until that point, 3. To discover/gain confidence in my true self. It's been a hard road and many times I've felt bordering a psychotic break but ultimately I'm glad I chose my most honest path. Sometimes I wish I could take it back and remain part of the crowd but the emptiness of that is what pushed me into this path anyway.

"I wish I could take it back." Well said. The wish to control time, to go back and make another decision, another choice. I think a lot of people struggle with this. The fact that a lot of us cling to their decisions, that once we made a choice, we signed a contract with time and we can never come back on it. The feeling that you have to make one choice makes me choose nothing at all at the end. Its like choice defines time, and their is only one time (the present).

I still couldn't believe that I survived. I couldn't believe I forgot the pain it caused me. It was all just memories now. Memories of pain that makes me smile now. Up to now, im still in solitude most of the time. I found in solitude what I couldn't get from others - peace, freedom, independence etc.. I found not just a wall I can lean on but also a charging station. It provides me a source of strength and energy in dealing with everyday life. I actually have a lot to say about this. A couple of years ago, I was alone for some time. And I don't mean alone as caved in and completely isolated from everyone. But, I did go through a phase, where I wouldn't talk to all the people I used to talk to. I wouldn't talk to them about anything, I wouldn't go snooping around and I wouldn't go looking for them. I was in my own planet or whatever you would like to call it. But, I learned a lot as I went through that phase. I discovered more about myself. I discovered what kind of person I was, I learned something's I liked, that hadn't even crossed my mind at all before. I found what really made me happy, and I found what it was that I was missing. So, actually...being away from everything else, has its benefits. Sometimes, people just want to be alone. And sometimes, that's the best thing that can happen to them.

I’ve always loved being alone but noticed that I often used cleaning, entertainment etc to distract my mind. Solitude can become much more beneficial when you allow yourself to feel the emotions that come with it. I am an introvert (not shy) to the most extreme extent, and really needed this video to connect back with and understand myself again. Thank you.

Phanes Same here. I have gained a lot of 'inspiration' and ideas from solitude lately for my art and other projects. I've always used to fight it most of my life like it was something to be frowned upon .. but I see it very differently now and have sort of surrendered to it -One of the best things that's ever happened to me. I value it so greatly more than before. I'm sort of an introvert but occasionally need some company but the right company. I need to be around like minded and open minded individuals who respect my solitude and not take it personally as rejection - I just need my "artistic space", to be in my zone and channel my creative energy efficiently. When I occasionally spend my time with the right people, then we get to exchange ideas or just enjoy one others company, gain inspiration from moments, memories, life stories from one another. I think balance is important but I'm leaning more towards solitude for so many things. So far, I have gained more wisdom and self knowledge this way. I got to spend more time reading books etc. I sometimes have such a busy solitude that I forget that I am alone at all. Some of my best work was from working alone. As one quote said about silence and it seems to relate to solitude for me in some way: "Silence is not empty, it's full of answers".

But but but, both maturation through solitude and maturation through interaction with others are essential and necessary. More to humanity as a whole than to individuals. It is clear that some enjoy and grow more in solitude, while others enjoy and grow more in company. However, not as individuals, but as a large group of humans, we need both kinds of maturation, for what might work better for some, such as artists and thinkers that can spend hours lost in their own thoughts; can be fruitless and boring to others. Similarly, what might be refreshing and interesting for those who enjoy their time socializing, can be exhausting and terrifying for those of us who prefer loneliness. Both are key to allow diverse individuals to be happy.

Destructopato I agree. We have multiple needs and sometimes we need solitude and sometimes we need relationships. There's a healthy balance I believe. Although that doesn't necessarily mean going out and partying or sitting in your room by yourself. It could mean just having people that check in on you once in a while and are interested in your journey/progress through life and your interest in theirs. Solitude can also mean being alone from people but close with the beauty and simplicity of nature. I do beleive it is important to have something to love and care for that you can nourish including yourself but also other than yourself. You can do this even with nature by not killing things(plants, animals, insects) if you don't need to unnecessarily (everything including us has a right to life and the persuit of life/well being) and helping a stranger is another way. This one you may have to use your best judgement as not all people are out for your good. Doing these things adds purpose and a responsibility which everyone needs. God bless.

Destructopato I'm sorry, but I think that you misunderstood the concept. Your comment suggests that you don't understand the point of solitude and it's connection to self awareness. You can't look deep within and discover your strengths and weaknesses around people. You will not get the chance to dig deep, if you're surrounded by people. In order to get to know yourself, you must be by yourself. People who go through the process of self awareness and becoming who they are, are fully capable of social interactions. They simply choose not to waste their time on nothingness and randomness. And they don't sit in the company of those who waste their time. They value their time too much to waste it. And that's because they realise the actual value of time, what time can do and how much can be achieved, planned and learnt in time, to waste time on people that follow the herd mentality. The greatest people out there are great because they separated themselves and went through the process of self awareness. The journey is yours alone. And it cannot be undergone surrounded by people. You can't fake the process. You cannot live off of someone else's self awareness because that will create dependency. A person with self awareness can only resonate with another person who has gone through the process, especially in a romantic relationship. You have to be equally yoked. You cannot fool a person who has gone through the process. You cannot fake experience. People who follow herd mentality and bully those who have reached self awareness, only prove how low their self worth is and how much they want to reduce you to their own level. Instead of going through the process and becoming strong, such people want to bring you down with them. That's herd mentality. Human interaction is not merely empty conversations with friends who follow the herd mentality. That is the lowest form of interaction and possibly one that will reduce you to nothingness. Business dealings, work related conversations, creating, critical thinking, etc are also part of human interaction. When you look deep within, face yourself and face your demons, you will recognise your strengths and weaknesses. You will accept yourself for who you are. At that point, you've realised your true potential and power. The blame and shame of society cannot touch you now. You are above the herd. In order to be above the herd, you must be away from herd and not immerse in its mediocrity and you must distinguish yourself from the herd. It's a decision. It's a process. You cannot fake it.

@Destructopato There is really no right and wrong answer but I agree with your comment. There are definitely things to learn through relationships and that is where real challenge comes in. Yes. there are infinite to learn through self awareness but there are also infinite to learn from other people and surroundings. I am a deep thinker and what I learned till now is that how you act infront of other people is also you. One teacher told me "persona" came from a word "mask" and that mask influences and is your identity. You can't see them as separate two. For instance, if you wear a mask of unconfidency when you socialize with other people, you become unconfident when you are alone. On the other hand, if you wear mask of being stubborn, you become stubborn. Everything starts from your mask. I am not perfectly sure but I want to question is there really you in yourself? When you were first born from your parents you see and learned from your parents and that became your identity as well. I don't think identity isn't something that is fixed. Rather it is like a cloud with full of so many colors. For example, things that you found about yourself through self awareness when you wear "unconfident" mask infront of there people, will be different from when you wear "I am the best" mask or "depressed" mask. There is no you if you are the only one living in earth. I see this theory positively because it means that you have a choice and decision to become who you want to be, and that is not being fake it is real you.

Solitude is a necessity for some and a curse for others. The reasons are dispositional and when it is a need, solitary people are born into it. I suffer greatly if I do not have enough alone time and I have been this way since I was a young child. I feel estranged from myself in those instances when deprived of time alone and become annoyed with people who get between me and me. Someone who experiences loneliness when not with others would not understand a creature like me. Know thyself and be and become what you know. Most of my friends are solitary creatures as well and we each understand the others need to be alone and respect it.

Katherine Kelly The Mind (Spirit) Needs SILENCE especially when one has been through so much Pain in Life, both Psychologically and Psychically!! the THOUGHT PROCESS (Noise) Can Destroy Completely a human being. lol and it Never Stops by using Force ( A Mechanism of Control) on the Contrary Increases! @katherinekelly6432
@katherinekelly6432 6 жыл бұрын
The noise is a compulsion created by the mind either trying to understand a paradox where there is no answer or trying to understand an experience where the persons perspective never allows them to know the truth (answers) to the questions that feed the compulsion. The other form of noise is an aspect of PTSD leaving the person in perpetual anxiety (hyperawareness) and "triggered" by events that the mind interprets as dangerous. The need for silence could be a coping mechanism to avoid being triggered. The person escapes into silence. My grandfather had been in war and years later my grandmother told me when he would dream of the experience he would grab her and throw her on the floor and cover her with his body to protect her from enemy fire. He kept reliving the trauma but that was because he did not know how to expunge this trauma from his mind so it stayed with him. The relationship we have with pain decides the life we will live including the pain that lives only in our mind as memory. The memories are etched into the physical mind and the person does nor know how to rewrite their past to take away the power of the etching. Diamonds are a hard substance that will etch glass. Trauma is a hard substance that will etch the mind. It takes an equally hard substance to over write the etching of trauma. True spirituality (not religion necessarily) is the only thing hard enough to remove trauma because it stops the person being preoccupied with their own pain and trauma. The pain creates a preoccupation with self "as pain" but stopping this preoccupation takes the mind off the pain. Make your life about "all that is". Find something that is greater than the self to dedicate your life to. Immerse yourself into it and share it with others. Be of service.

while being alone can help with self-cultivation, it's important to remember that other people can benefit us, and keep us in check. if the only person you spend time around is yourself, you may develop assumptions about the world that are false, that may only be visible to outside observers, thus it's important to keep others in our lives, to make such observations.

I think the healthy individual has the benefit of both . Solitude and the ideal of self realization for a more whole individual is augmented by interactions with others. Like a blanket that brings warmth and comfort in the night brings relief to the mind and body. A well rested or calm individual is much more productive and effective individual. But if you don't have the benefit of interpersonal relationships a substitute can be creativity by which those emotions can be expressed.A catharsis.

There should not be either extreme. The desire for solitude is born because of a feeling of disconnectedness that has already been present. It is a just a quest to end the solitude within us. i used to wonder why i liked books with dark themes most. it finally occurred to me that i was simply embracing my dark side. i think of it as a vicious dog: it has a big yard to roam in, plenty of food and water, i play with it often. i can't let it take any walks unless it's on a strong chain. if needed, i can let it do its worst.

I actually missed being alone. The feeling when its raining and you walk alone... And no one stops the music on your phone with a call. And the feeling that you are alone in this huge world, can be inspiring and enjoyable. I think I am slowly returning to being self sufficient and happy with my self.

@Timehacker It was mentioned in the video, something about losing themselves in others...and here you are telling someone else what THEY mean, as opposed to the person SAID what they meant. I suppose when you lose yourself in others, it becomes relatively easy to put words in someone else's mouth.

You think that in solitude, you don't take into consideration your own wants and moods? People can be pretty easy to figure out, they'll tell you what they want if you pay close enough attention, but trying to figure out yourself? You'll be chasing yourself round and round trying to please yourself. At the end of the day, people want love and attention. But when it comes to one's self, we can be hesitant and self conscious about how much of that we receive.

Voluntarily seeking solitude is the way to truly combat and come to terms with the darkness we have within. Only alone can you see yourself for who you truly are and not a mere copy of someone else or living up to others standards. If you truly want seek out your individuality, join us and take a step into the abyss ;)

I find the key to a social life as an introvert is figuring out what you Really want from people, and to find a small group that exhibit those traits, that way you can have solitude as usual, but you'll never feel alone because you know you have people you genuinely like the be around whenever you're feeling social. I'm not saying to surround yourself with clones, looking for specific ideologies and opinions will lead you almost nowhere, and more than one friend that's like your clone will get tedious, variety is what makes humans so interesting. My best way to explain it is an example For me, all I ask for in a friend is a genuinely open mind, so that if we enjoy each other's company I feel peaceful knowing if we disagree on something we have an honest talk about it and hopefully come out with newly formed perspectives, it also lets me know even if we do have conflicting ideologies, we'll be smart enough to realize that doesn't make us enemies, or incompatible as friends. On that note, if you disagree: I implore you to explain why and/or share a method that worked for you.

I love the way you phrased your last paragraph. Today it seems, most people want to fight, win the argument, not listen to any counter evidence, no matter how factual, to their claim(s). The obvious loss of critical thinking skills among many is a diminution of our society. You sound like someone I would love to have as an intellectual companion.

@@brianpan6453 Sorry to send you the equivalent to a small book, but I don't think I can justify this without one. Honestly I don't think our society has gotten much worse in that regard, but rather due to the internet we're constantly exposed to humanity's flaws, and naturally with social media and the like opinions are gonna be thrown around like snowballs...sometimes with a rock in them... luckily I think people are realizing how miserable this can make them when they got caught up in it too much. Our brains are wired to remember negatives, it dates back to when that kind of mindset was useful (I mean god forbid you forget where that lion den was on your hunts), but in this day and age it makes things look really shitty, especially because the Only exposure to the olden days we have is from newspapers, advertisements, and word of mouth, which means we can only know as much about previous generations as we're told, no social media to document daily life, and so the old days look peaceful and simple to anyone that doesn't dig deeper, in reality even straight white males had it worse because showing tears was more or less a taboo to most, a problem only recently being called out for being absurd. It feels like humanity's progression is extremely sluggish, but if you look at all that's happened in just 100 years (sometimes the length of just a single human lifespan) it's pretty blatant we're in a transitional period, a whole lot is happening for only a couple generations, and, well we've seen how poorly some people handle change, so it's caused Plenty of drama. I'm only 18 and I've watched as each new generation is more open minded than the last due to them being born in a vastly expanded world: the average joe having the technology to make meaningful connections with anyone, the ability to always be informed on what's happening in the world outside his little world, and gays, transsexuals, different cultures interacting on the daily as equals weren't even considered a possibility by most just a hundred+ years ago, even depression was considered a joke label to many, somebody being pathetically sad and trying to blame it on something. The knowledge available to us has made a lot of people more pessimistic, and it makes our brain do that thing where it makes all our problems into one giant problem that seems absolutely insurmountable, but it's also fueled a near constant train of change, people looking past that thing our brain does and fixing each problem one by one, and I like to think that's better than living in ignorance of the problems we could be fixing, many of which are problems that, in the long run, would someday force us to live on a different planet, not because we want to explore, but because we were parasitic to our home.

@Spencer Genovese, America’s social dysfunction has continued to intensify as the nation has ignored a key underlying pathology: anti-intellectualism. America is killing itself through its embrace and exaltation of ignorance, and the evidence is all around us. “A culture of ignorance” is one that has given up the concept of truth. Opinion and persuasion rule. Traditional sources and certifiers of knowledge such as universities, the sciences, and established journalism, are undermined and discredited. As a society, we are now spending too much time, energy, and capital battling willful ignorance-about climate control, about the genuine effects of social policies, about the extent and impact of governmental programs, about immigrants, about those who are different. Many public figures, many voters, wear their ignorance like a badge of honour. When challenged and cornered, they retreat to the hollow claim that “I have a right to believe whatever I want.” What is especially shameful is that we have this culture of ignorance at the same moment in history when our ability to secure, preserve, access, and share knowledge has exploded. There was never a better time to be a scholar; never better resources for an informed citizenry. “Ever wonder about those people who spend $2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward. ”
