There is perhaps no figure in literature more fascinating than the trickster, appearing in various forms in the folklore of many cultures. Trickster is witty and deceitful. He is the timeless root of all the picaresque creations of world literature, and is not reducible to one single literary entity. Trickster tales have existed since ancient times, and has been said to be at the very foundation of civilisation and culture. They belong to the oldest expressions of mankind.
Tricksters are the breakers of rules, agents of mischief, masters of deceit, and boundary crossers. He is an agent of change, and is amoral, not immoral. Trickster is at one and the same time creator and destroyer, giver and negator, he who dupes and who is always duped himself. Psychologically, the trickster is an archetype, part of the collective unconscious. Trickster is everywhere, he is an eternal state of mind.
The integration of the trickster archetype allows us to go from being ruled by our own self-centred ego to a new way of living, in which one has integrity and relatedness. It allows us to become aware of our true emotions, behaviours, and thoughts, that our unconscious persona is hiding, and without which there is no individuation at all.

To play devil is fun until there is no more God to rebel against. Then you learn you simply tricked yourself into thinking you beat something, when in reality you were all alone. Then you realize you are God. Truly alone with nothing to fight against but your own ego.

Then they are deceived again. The devil cannot win against the Creator that’s foolishness, again the trickster is also tricked, the master is also slave. This world is dual, and is formed from the illusion of duality which is the ultimate trick, those who love this life will lose it and those who hate it shall find it eternal. There is only one way, and that is the way everything else is illusion

The trickster is my favorite entity in a story because he is neither an antagonist nor a protagonist, but in of itself it’s own being.
@bardsamok9221
@bardsamok9221 11 ай бұрын
There are countless stories where the trickster is either a protagonist or an antagonist. Most characters in stories are represented as beings, regardless of being a protagonist or antagonist. The sentence "in of itself its own being" is potentially circular or meaningless, it's hard to say which because of poor sentence construction so I'd assume both as it's apparently logically unparsable given linguistic norms.
@bardsamok9221
@bardsamok9221 11 ай бұрын
It's cool that it's your favourite character type, I'm guessing from your words that you are saying you like tricksters because because they can occasionally seem neutral in their ambivalence or alignment with a protagonist. But that's just a fraction of stories of course, and even then neutrality can be debatable, but I think I appreciate your point. Personally I like the classic antagonist type tricksters fwiw :)
@bardsamok9221
@bardsamok9221 11 ай бұрын
I have to agree that ethically or morally ambivalent characters, and their ambiguity as to whether they are helpful to a protagonist or not, are often the most amusing. What's your favourite 'neutral' trickster that's not an antagonist or protagonist?
@bardsamok9221
@bardsamok9221 11 ай бұрын
I'm guessing that when you refer to 'in of itself their own being' you may be thinking of a hypothetical metaphysical archetypical being a layer above the ostensible 'being' of a given written trickster character?

I think that the trickster causes mischief in times of peace to keep people from becoming complacent, and continuing their development on the path of change, wherever that change may lead them. In contrast, when external forces seek this trip individuals of their free will, that is legitimately never a beneficial change, and know the trickster will not outright stop the overpowering force, giving people hope allows them to recognize their own internal power, and avoid the fear that is being sown by the oppressive force, in order to keep them from even considering trying to change their circumstances. The trickster is not a deity of life, death, tricks, or anything else in that vein, in my opinion. Rather, it is the vehicle, through which change, the more absurd the better, is able to be manifest into our reality, likely because of the fact that the more novel The experience, the more information density it contains, and the more quickly human beings with a certain level of self-incory can use that information to hasten their spiritual evolution, if they so choose. He fucks around not to cause havoc, or mayhem, but to show people where the gigantic, gaping holes in their perception line, so that they can expand their awareness, IMO. This is also why the trickster is often embodied as a shapeshifter, to show individuals that they are not tied to any ideas, emotions, beliefs, or filters they may currently hold on to, but they, too, can shift their shape into whatever they see fit, for any given moment, once they metaphorically give up the ghosts of their past. Relating to another thing that was said, Lucifer does not disguise himself as an angel of light. He is the original angel of light, but, through a similar fall that humanity had, which I take to mean the development of a personal ego, and not only understanding, but acceptance that it is separate from the divine, I don't think the Divine through it out, I think accepting that perception caused it to no longer be compatible enough with the energy of the undistorted Divine to be able to connect directly with it, any longer. I think that may be why these personifications seem to take such great care in protecting humanity, at their darkest hours, because they have gone through the exact same path we had, but come out the other side, as a more fully realized being, and simply want to assist us in traversing this incredibly confusing, and often, painful path as quickly as possible, if we so choose to do so. I like to think of humanity as the TV show friends. A lot of the time, it seems like no one was at all in charge of planning the episodes, and it oftentimes devolves into nonsense, in a way that isn't even funny, but nonetheless, a significant amount of individuals are enamored by that drama, since they have evolved past the generation of their own. After all, many people watch drama and mystery series so that they can remind themselves of their own unique perspectives, and how they could apply to various situations, I'll be at they only generally do this subconsciously.

Satan is less so a Trickster and more a Deciever. He isn't a fool, but instead very wise. His goals are to dismantle and set up his own rather than to cause pure mischief. It's easy to confuse the two becauae they are very similar. But the Trickster is just having fun. A Deciever is someone who is being purposely destructive to achieve a goal. He saw Humanity was going to have a higher standing than him. He wanted to be God and he got jealous. So he dragged humanity down.

Excellent. I love the way you walk us through the historical examples and into Individuation. Into the alchemical process of uniting the unconscious with the conscious . This is quite an expansive subject but I just want to add my little two cents to the discussion here. As an alcoholic and a long time struggling addict I can tell you that the philosophy and deeper search for understanding is something that can be helpful and can also be a burden. I think we all are trapped in our own undoing as mortal beings. I think the subconscious is constantly reminding us that every breath we take it's one less that we'll take. These are just random observations and not pointed in any particular direction just glad to have resources such as videos like this to expand my mind and get a little bit more in touch with reality.

Jesus, this made me reflect quite a bit on my own active immaturity. I've always hated having to be serious and even as a kid I never saw the point in things like status, social standing etc. Now I'm more or less the same, only with a more grown up perspective. Still mocking society and its delicate sensibilities often getting people mad at me. I started being more outward after constantly letting people walk on me. This video was immensely insightful Edit: in short, I am a shit poster who is actively and knowingly immature and obnoxious when it comes to my own opinions on the silliness of people trying to conform or force conformity or make conformity the "status quo". I don't like being forced into a mold, and honestly I don't think anyone does, I think we conform out of a desire to be accepted. I'm against that too. Why try to fit in if you're not being your true self? Why lie just to be liked? It's maddening to me. I'd rather be a free outcast than a popular slave

Such an interesting archetype. Quite a few years ago, before I really got into any of these subjects, I was learning about psychedelics, and one of things that I found so fascinating was the constantly reoccurring image of the jester in people's DMT experiences (I think mostly when smoked, for whatever reason). It can seemingly arise in a demonic, or wholesomely playful manner; but I've never been quite able to understand why it seems to arise from so many people's psyche when they intake that specific substance. Not to say it won't arise through the use of other psychedelics, but there's seems to be a particular association with DMT. The closest I can get to an answer is that it's about the boundaries. Psychedelics, almost by their nature, being boundary destroyers.

@tommeakin1732 Жыл бұрын
@Andrew Das Did I do that? I think you're imagining me to be something I am not, and the passion in your response suggests you're arguing with a demon in your own mind, not me. I've never taken a meaningful dose of any psychedelic; but I do find them to be a very interesting anomaly, purely for their ability to allow for immediate insight into the depths of one's own mind. Anything that allows some insight into the unconscious is profoundly interesting to me. As for why the trickster would appear in psychedelic experiences: This video is fully of reasons why, if you know even a little about psychedelics.

Maybe my story will help you in some way. My name is Vinícius and I am 24 years old. I had already used magic mushrooms twice with my girlfriend, about 3 grams... one day I had the opportunity to be alone in a friend's apartment and I decided to ingest about 7 grams (a dose known as a "heroic dose" for some people). Unlike the first two experiences, it started in an extremely negative way, I had nausea and was stuck in an indescribable place in time and space. I went to the shower with a horrible feeling, which never seemed to end, lay in the shower and felt like a drug addict for finding myself in that situation. A while later, as an instinct, I decided to lie in bed, in the dark, listening to an incredible artist called “acid pauli”. Surprisingly all the bad feeling slowly turned into pure experience, depersonalization, I became the whole. About 40 minutes later I saw something like a green temple, which turned into Catholic church windows. In one of these windows I saw an image of Christ, walking slowly. A short time later the music became denser, and my vision became “infected” by the red color. After that, the red has condensed into the devil's figure, but it was a figure from children's movies, so I’ve had a quick feeling of anguish and fear turned into laughter. When I laughed, the devil took on the jester's figure and smiled back at me, disappearing. A few months later I heard that Joe Rogan had a similar experience using DMT, which convinced me about the existence of Carl Jung's archetypes and the collective unconscious. You seem like a curious guy, good luck in your search man!

I've used psilocybin a handful of times. One experience in particular brought out the trickster energy in full. My girlfriend at the time and I were tripping in the woods. It was incredible...deep primordial connection to nature, etc. But then...I saw these gnomes...scampering about the underbrush. They looked like classic folklore gnomes...total David the Gnome vibes. And what was bizarre...was that they were _open eye_ hallucinations. And they interacted with the environment...climbing up branches, sliding down leaves, etc. There seemed to be a hundred that I could see....and thousands that I could sense somewhere out there...hiding. But then, they noticed me...noticing them. And they got VERY excited by that. They all started....taunting me. Playfully for the most part. But every now and then...one of them would yell out something mean and personal, like "hey fucker, your girlfriend is hot, why is she with YOU?" It was _very_ weird...but also fascinating and quite entertaining. They basically saw any and every weakness or fear or anxiety I had, in that moment, or in my life, and commented on it out loud. One would say something...and then 20 others would laugh. It was hyper vivid....very hard to tell myself this wasn't literally happening. (Was it??) And then....they all started saying "this is boring...you're boring...we're leaving...bye loser!" and scampered off just as quick as they came. What's weird is I have zero interest in fantasy...or fantasy creatures, etc. I literally watched David the Gnome as a kid....that's it. And yet, my subconscious rendered full on 3D lucid _gnomes_ complete with red pointy hats and little knapsacks full of....herbs? idk... It had immense trickster energy.....and to this day, I cannot fully explain how my mere mind conjured THAT.

I’ve had an intense Candyflip Trip (100ug LSD and 100mg MDMA) in a controlled study setting and met „the trickster“ (or „tricksters“, „gnomes“) and he really played with me, showing me discomfort and destroying deep believes I’ve held in my Ego, dissoluting it to mere atoms, showing me incredible but terrifying beauty. He pushed me towards my boundaries, showing me a „joke“ in any case - pretty or not, he didn’t care. I’ve had this deep believe about psychedelics that they are something profound and deeply spiritual, thought, I „finally get it“, but he showed me how wrong my believes are, that a psychedelic trip could be at the same time something profound but also something deeply mundane and primitive, just being a toxin from a plant to confuse every animal daring to eat something they should not (like a mushroom), being a mere tactic in a evolutionary sense, hacking the nervous system and letting the animal be disassociated and depersonalized, putting a voltage of several thousand volts to the nervous system just because it can. But the joke was easy - even if spiritual or mundane, the trip still exists in all its glory, either showing something about the reality we perceive, as something our brain filters out, alas we live in a „low resolution“ in every day life and the „trip“ is the „real world“ - or showing that the brain is just malfunctioning, reality is as it is, but the trip shows the nature of the toxin, merely to confuse, the big question still stands: why are we seeing these geometric patterns, this simulation we live in deconstructed? Even if mundane or spiritual, this truth is still true and my point of view doesn’t change this fact - my interpretation is as wrong as it’s right, the trickster showed me this joke - humans see patterns when there are none and both interpretations are mere patterns we see, both right and wrong at the same time - the trickster showed me how funny it is to hold myself to „a meaning“ when there is maybe a lot of meaning or none at all My ego was fast to think it has understood it, quick to fool itself with meaning (or none), while both is true and false, while the answer is maybe not important but the question still reveals a lot about human nature and myself. The trickster showed me beautiful things and horrors, scared me with self righteous jokes, just to prove a point - how seemingly bipolar things can be true at the same time, oxymorons exist in real life and contradictions and irrationality are truth in many perspectives. He showed me to be patient, to understand more, be more introspective, not so fast to judge. I was humbled by force. He was not evil, nor was he good, he just was. Wanted to share this experience.

@Pete Testube I don't know if this example will suffice, but kids and toddlers will want to run around and experiment with everything, because they don't know about painful consequences in their life as much as they do rewarding explorations, so when they're told something is dangerous and not to play with something, they'll often become curious as to this strange reason of "why not," and use their love of exploring to find a way to "push the boundaries" of your rules, so that they can use their energy to understand why not by using their best skills: to explore the dangerous thing themselves. So, they may lie, and say they they didn't touch it, but they'll lie in a way where you can tell they're exploring the concept of lying, too, and pushing the boundaries to see how that concept works, they hate punishment since it's the only thing they know to be a tragic emergency in life, so they'll work to avoid punishment, yet still fulfill their every desire to explore. Sometimes that doesn't mean lying to you if you don't see eye to eye with them and they disobeyed. Sometimes it means acting coy, playing cute, wailing, whining or crying, hiding their faces, running away, etc. All sorts of different tricks. 😊

I always identified with the trickster archetype because I take a lot of enjoyment dancing along the line of boundaries, poking holes in ideals and pointing hypocrisies of others. I think nowadays a modern day trickster would be the trolls on the internet, mocking and laughing mercilessly at others and pointing out how seriously everyone takes things and laughing at things that shouldn’t be laughed at. So I can see how a trickers could be found at the boundaries of things.
