The Wise Old Man or Sage is an archetype that is recognised by almost everyone, be it in stories, games, movies, or everyday life. In myth he is often shown as one living in isolation, meditating and living a simple life deep in a forest, in the mountains, or in other uninhabited places. The Wise Old Man is a lover of wisdom, and uses his experience to guide others. He is portrayed as a mysterious person or a wizard, in contact with nature and the numinous and unseen forces that permeate our existence.
The Wise Old man appears as a teacher of wisdom such as King Solomon from the Bible. In Hermeticism, he is Hermes Trismegistus, the fount of all wisdom and the teacher of the mystery of all ages. In China, the sage is Lao Tzu ("old man" or "old master"), the founder of Taoism, while in India there are the sadhus and yogis. In Arthurian Legend he is Merlin, in Nietzsche he appears as the prophet Zarathustra, and in Carl Jung as Philemon. In modern popular fiction we have Yoda, Gandalf and Dumbledore, among others.
In the individuation process (the lifelong journey towards psychic wholeness), the archetype of the Wise Old Man is late to emerge, and is therefore seen as an indication of the Self (the total personality).

@@RebelJones-wg7vz Hi. Thanks for asking. It's changing everything for the better in ways I never expected. Especially in terms of unmasking and of discovering my authentic self (masking being the unconscious suppression of ones natural autistic traits and behaviours in order to fit into a neurotypical society). The personal cost of authenticity has been high, but I think the cost of living an unauthentic life would have been higher. For me getting the diagnosis has been worth it because it serves as a bureaucratic tool enabling me access to support and accommodations I could not otherwise get. Many choose not to get a diagnosis and manage just fine but you'll have to weigh that one for yourself in lew of what difficulties your ASD presents and if you feel you may need support and/or accommodations as you go on with your life.

On madness (and linked states) and wisdom, I found it interesting, when looking into the Germanic lands of the early middle ages and earlier, that the head pagan Germanic god, Woden/Wotan/Oðinn (or the like ten other ways you can spell the name depending on time and place) is hard linked with "mad, insane, excited, manic inspiration, frenzied, furious, angry" - but seemingly also linked with wisdom, knowledge, and definitely kingship (being the first on the kings-lists of all Germanic peoples; technically still to this day with at least some monarchies) while also being mostly shown as an old man. One thing that comes to mind is that I've heard that in some lands (I'm thinking of south american tribes) where shamanism is still practiced, I believe the mentally ill can be brought under the care of the shaman and treated as a link between the "spirits" and the living. I think this is not too far from the role that bodies of water, or marshes have played in many belief systems; where it stands as a gateway from the world of the living to "elsewhere". As to how this could be linked to wisdom and knowledge, I think it mostly comes down to the greatest hoards being found outside of the rigid bounds of "normal society". Even in our own lives, it is often the case that for inspiration and those times when something "clicks", it often means you have to get out of your own way, or get outside of oneself. A bit rambly, but I thought I'd bring it up

On that note, there was a Norse deity that is barely recorded called Hønir. He was both Odin and Loki's sworn brother and would travel with them. In the few accounts he appears in, he acts as a middle man to both of them and eventually became king of the Vanir after the hostage exchange. He was beautiful and appeared wise, yet he would not put forth his own opinion. Surprisingly, when the Vanir felt tricked, they did not kill him but his other, more famous, hostage Mimir. Which has led me to consider Hønir might have also been Odr (divine madness), who was married to Freya. Yet that is speculation. He was also a Lord of Marshes, which would be considered the middle area between freshwater and land and oceans. I think the important thing to consider is that one must be able to walk on both sides, even when one is different. There is a middle ground, even if it is treacherous and possibly full of dangers. Especially if it is full of dangers. For each of us that goes forward and learns can teach the next to go further.

I am without a doubt, the dark sage, and have been for probably the last decade or more. My favorite character has always been Raistlin Majere, of the dragonlance. A neutral wizard, who turned into an evil wizard and donned the black robes, in his quest for power, Had an evil mage's soul trapped/infused inside of him, because it promised him power, he accepted it with a cost to his health. A man who would do anything for power. To show everybody that he is not weak. In the end, he saves everybody with his power, was reedemed and is indeed good. But is still "evil" in the end and he ended up taking over as a GOD, literally ascending into godhood because his magic was so powerful. Even though everybody distrusted him, In the end he was the one who chose to defeat evil on earth and saved everybody. Anti-hero. I'm not as cynical or negative as i was 5 years ago, but every bit else was true. I don't know what this means for me, if I wish to change, then the first step is to know thyself. And sit in a room alone all by myself. ADHD has plagued me and used it as a crutch at times. Self medicating with cannabis is the only solution i have found that restores my temporary euphoria, replacing depression and anger. Anger probably most of all. As a child I was never the angry one, Always the witness of it, knowing what it is, what it looks like , smells like, always being around it, Always being too logical to use it myself and choosing to discard it in my youth because it served no productive purpose. I had no need for it. But now it pops up in my marriage, in myself, against any authority, and against the clock itself. Everything it said about the dark sage was true for me. AM I taking traits from my favorite fictional character? Maybe something bad happened to me at that time. Maybe some trauma linked me to that moment in time I first discovered the young wizard. Maybe I just thought he was cool for always being a badass who could fight without a sword, and solve problems with his mind. Now I day trade and am attempting to be the hero for my family. Trying to get rich quick and treat it like playing the guitar, Spending money every single year, and breaking even not really getting anywhere, But I know deep down If i keep practicing, Just like the guitar In 7 years or so It might actually " click" and I'll get all my losses back and more. My family thinks I'm gambling probably. And at times I am because I am still a noob, and have horrible habits as a young man. I'm getting older each second though, and am frustrated at the concept of patience. Opposite of patience is Anger, one of the 7 deadly sins. I think patience is the key to solving the dark sage. Thus, turning to the light side, and embracing love again. Discard the anger forever.

I have some things I must do, before I die. If I don't do them, no one else will and it will not matter. I have found love in the giving of myself and sorrow from those who demand myself be given to them. I will miss the blue, blue sky and the trees and the birds, when I am gone, I will miss the feel of warm sand on my naked feet, but then, I may not. Perhaps there is no tomorrow beyond the sunset, perhaps there is Paradise, where there are trees and birds and warm sand, I have no control over that, I will only know after the sun sets.
