@ Alejandro Ayora: "My heart just breaks everytime I see a bubba'd Cetme or G3" As a firearm collector, I'd love to run across a vintage iron-sighted wood-stocked CETME clone (true CETME rifles which are select fire are heavily-regulated and require a special permit, and are also quite expensive), but the only people making them for the USA are Century Arms, and those rifles - while attractive to look at - are famous for not being able to shoot point-of-aim to point-of-impact. They can't be zeroed due to barrel mistiming or other issues related to the sights. They also require a special front sight tool which is not always easy to find. And wood-stocked G3s are hard to find. PTR Industries of South Carolina make a nice G3 clone, but quit making wood furniture rifles a while back and haven't done any since.

I have the secret to accurizing a PTR. Spanish foregrips. Hear me out. The achilles' heel of the system is the pencil barrel. It's not inherently bad, but it does make it highly susceptible to heat and pressure. Use a loose and sloppy CETME handgrip, and *do not* tighten it. Just keep the screw in enough that it's not going to fall out. It should wobble. Then, shoot it off of a bag, not a bipod. If you mount a bipod to the barrel, putting pressure on it (even just the weight of the rifle) will screw up your barrel harmonics. If you put the bipod on the foregrip, preloading it forward puts strain on the *top* of the barrel. It goes without saying, use halfway decent ammunition. Any OTM type round is generally fine, but most PTR family rifles have a 1:10 barrel that benefits from using a 168gr projectile. I've seen this three times, going from a tacticool'd out Rainbow 6 build to something that looks like it came out of Fallout 3, and the grouping size goes from 3" to 0.75". It's infuriating, because I want my bipod, but until I build a custom foregrip with a mount to isolate the bipod from the barrel, it's not going to change.

The MFI seems to be the lowest mount out there. I've used a TA33 3X ACOG with the Spuhr Top Rail (which sits a little higher it looks than the MFI) and I think the best I could do was getting the telescoping stock somewhere around the very bottom of my cheek, if I played around with it enough. I guess if I absolutely had to, I could make it work, but I'd have trouble trying to do it consistently. That's just me though. Still not as bad as some of the full-on "neck welds" that'd be required for some of the builds in this video.

The HK bipod looks cool, but it makes the otherwise very comfortable wide handguard rather uncomfortable when it's folded, and it's really heavy. It also sucks as a bipod because it's too tall (with no height adjustment) to use while prone (unless you're shooting uphill maybe). But it could also be that I have no idea how to use a bipod.

As someone who put some effort into "modernizing" a PTR 109 myself, I should thank you for this video. I could probably add some details. Many builds (including my own) include an overmolded HK21-style charging handle that, in my case, saves my frostbitten fingers. I also have a vertical grip, but after figuring out what works for me the best, I ended up having a very short one from Strike Industries, because I tend to never actually grip around it but rather use it as an oversized hand stop. Also, having two QD mounting points (one - where the original one goes and another - much closer to the receiver) gives much more carrying flexibility with only a few grams of weight added.

thanks to the adjustability of your headspace and bolt gap with some work on the rollers and considering most are freefloated you can *make* them very mechanically accurate by bringing the gap in. But most manufacturers are not going to send out rifles with such tight gaps as that effects function with ammo that might not be to M80 ball specs. That being said with not very much cash in parts (we are talking sub 50 bucks) you can easilly tighten the groups into the 1 ish MOA range. But most people still think roller guns operate on magic so they dont do the bolt work and instead buy accessories

@GeorgiaBoy1961
@GeorgiaBoy1961 3 жыл бұрын
@ Mattias Petrmichl: PTR 91's are made from old surplus blueprints and machining from the Austrian firm of Steyr - which used to make them for the government of that nation - so they're accurate facsimiles. The OEM triggers are lousy, so if you have ambitions to shoot accurately you usually need an after-market trigger or a trigger-job, since they're 10-12 lbs. factory with tons of creep and over-travel. The barrels are supposed to be quite accurate, but the heavy and large bolt-assembly reciprocating can degrade accuracy for some users, so a buffer update is also common. 2-3 moa doesn't sound like much now, but as recently as the 1960s, those were the specs for service rifle accuracy. If the standard military silhouette is 18-inches wide, and the iron sights on the G3 are good to 500 meters, then 3 moa gets you there still on center-mass. The sights are graduated to 400 meters, but if memory serves, recruits are taught to hold over to reach 500 and even 600 meters using irons alone. The rifle is accurate-enough; the real issue is how good is that NATO-spec. M80 Ball you're using. If it is good quality and capable of better than 3 moa, chances are you'll be OK even with iron sights. True precision shooting -like a DMR - is another matter all together.

The wide handguard is useful over the tropical because it has a heat shield. The navy plastic grip lightens it up a little. Timney is making a drop in trigger for the SEF trigger housing.....that's about all you really need. Those aluminum rail fore ends will get amazingly hot.....
@jkellyid

biggest issue I have with these is that no matter what you do the optics mounts suck balls. Lets be honest, spot welding pic rail onto a stamped sheet metal upper us about as ghetto as it comes. If I was going this route I'd try to find some OG optics setups. The PSG style stocks look the most functional, same for the bipod hand guards.

Lmfao the "cursed" one from your thumbnail is the one I'd get. Ofc the scope is mounted high because fuck trying to get a cheekweld on that skeleton stock. Chinweld is pretty ez and the stock is dope looking plus actually gets the gun compact for storage and travel. Big ass muzzle brake to tame the recoil. It has the retro cool look but just enough mods to be semi practical

It's funny that you say the setups with claw mounts are impracticable when it's the way HK intended for optics to be mounted on all the roller lock guns (they made factory stock w/adjustable riser). Most claw mounts also allowed the irons to still be used

I had a msg 91. I was able to lock it back using a PST 6-24x50. If i remember correctly it was completely free floated because the handguard mounted to the cocking tube, not the sight tower. It wasn’t terribly accurate though. 1.5-2moa with federal 168g GMM.

It's so funny to see some HK/PTR guns that are made to *not* allow for the charging handle to lock back. A lot of the ranges near me require you to lock your handle back, bolt open, and place it on the bench or in the rack, so basically you couldn't shoot these guns at these ranges without the RO kicking your ass out

All I got on my ptr is a nice Mlok fore end and a grip. I just run it as a battle rifle for mid range stuff. I wish they would offer versions with the irons milled off and just pic rail sections in their place, but most people who buy these guns do it for the classic retro appeal. Jeff at PCS sometimes does this for customers who request it, though.

@@shoelessbandit1581 Feel like trying to scope any of the Cold War battle rifles is going to be a hassle. I gave up on the FAL and G3 clones and bought a SCAR when they were high 2000s. Those days are gone for now but it’s just a better option IMO.

@Sam Huff It does make you wonder why they insisted on having the sights so low. It doesn't surprise me that at the time irons were still king, and scopes would be an afterthought in most cases, but I wish some of the designers were still around today so we could ask them specifically why they wanted the sights as low as they did.

All G3's and clones are free floated inherent to the design. 2-3 MOA is pretty normal. It should be noted that, until AR's started becoming free floated more regularly, 2-3 MOA from a G3 was typically better. Mil M4/M16 standard is 4.5/4 MOA respectively. Not to say accuracy isn't important, but I think most people are overly concerned with MOA accuracy, especially when most shooters are not MOA accurate. 2-3 MOA for a combat rifle is plenty adequate.
@themischeifguide
@themischeifguide Жыл бұрын
People tend to get overly concerned about a lot of stuff, but yeah 2-3 is good enough. Considering typical engagement distances even back to the Civil War through WW2 and up to now, I'd be happy with a rifle that can make good hits at 200-300 meters. There are exceptions sure but mostly 200 meters and closer. I never thought my M16A2 or M4 were inaccurate, I thought they shot really well.
