US Release Date: April 5, 2019
Starring: Alec Baldwin, Emilio Estevez, Jena Malone
Directed By: Emilio Estevez
Synopsis: In "The Public" an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

I work for the public library is in Memphis, and jokes on this movie, we actually do have libraries that act as warming and cooling shelters when the weather gets extreme. (Because years ago a woman did freeze to death on the steps of City Hall and things changed immediately.)

I hope you aren't perceiving this film as a criticism or a stab at public libraries---it's "City Hall" that takes the flack, the library staff are largely heroes in "The Public" film storyline (as they damn well should be).

ONTARIO EQUIPMENT SALES Yup every time I go to that library in winter and fall I always see the same homeless people. Fortunately the librarians are really accommodating and don’t care as long as they don’t cause a huge disturbance. Also a lot of them are super nice.

A Interesting film on a Real Heartbreaking issue. I've been going to libraries since I was in elementary and it's always been a place of Mental and Emotional comfort for me. But for the last 20 plus years, I've noticed a major rising in the homeless turning the place of learning and research into a public shelter. This film may shine a light on this and give us pause to think about a better solution.

When I saw an advertisement that there was a movie about the library called "The public" in Japan, I remembered a strange event that happened recently. About three times, I had the experience of encountering the keyword "library" on that day. Mysterious things often happen when I try to stop writing from the beginning to spread my thoughts using the Yahweh name. When I read the synopsis of this movie, I was thinking about an idea similar to the idea of the library = shelter. The number of unemployed people is increasing all over the world. At the same time, it is necessary to protect against violence against children and vulnerable humans. I felt it was necessary because I knew that a girl running away from home could get caught up in violence again and lose her heart. I myself have the experience to understand it. Not only that, but I think "heart" and "emotion" are very important. When I look at the letters "library", it looks like the letters rally united when I lived. The origin of the letters is also interesting, isn't it? We need to gather wisdom and fight to improve the future. h/why=yhwh=360°eddiee55

Homelessness is becoming an epidemic in the last 30 years and this movie I haven't seen but is not going to solve anything. We have a government that does not care about down and out men and women. Many of the homeless do want to find a way up BUT many of them especially the young are lazy and do not want to work, are drug addicts and alcholics! I may get backlash because of this but I have seen this and have firsthand knowledge!! America must have rent control so slumlords don't keep exploiting the homeless who do find housing! Public housing should be more affordable and the long waiting list to obtain HUD and Section 8 should be shortend! BUT as i said many of society's well to do don't care to change any of this. We have a sitting POTUS that knows rampant homelessness exists but scorns the marginalized and only plays politics with the Dems about trivial matters!! I could go on ad infinitum but after this movie makes enough money and no longer is popular the situation will continue with the homeless and life will go on!

I feel that the atmosphere of the main character is like Mr. Khashoggi, a journalist from Saudi Arabia. At the beginning of this movie, there is a person singing naked, and at the end everyone is arrested naked and taken away. I am afraid that it is similar to the episode of the Israeli film "The Farewell Party", which was screened in the Venice Days section of the 71st Venice International Film Festival and has been selected to be screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. I pray that he or they will not be taken to the Holocaust.

So... Lots to say. But I know what they were going for....and the almost did it. They almost got the psychology right too. However, just when I thought they wouldnt 'lean deep' into a specific cultural ploy, the guy started banging and saying, "make some noise"..... I was shook. I thought they were making a little attempt at "mad city", "john Q", "falling down", etc.... But what sucks is one minute they are saying how they have their freedom and the next they "expect" things. You cant say, "I'm separating from the norm", but then expect the "norm" to cover your butt. But when he read the grapes of wrath, instead of clearly and logically defining exactly - point by point - what happened, why it happened, and what is happening at the moment.....It was a write off. Also, when they said "I'm not a criminal" and FURTHER SAID, "I havent broken God's laws", I vomited in my mouth twice... They are BREAKING the law at that moment... And I wont even TOUCH ON the "God's laws" comment.

Agreed. the grittier feel of the first one is more spot on with the story. It's amazing what a difference a change in music and some light editing can make. When when the first trailer came out, I think they were already screening at festivals. Some focus group must have told them it was too dark and they tried make it "lighter." Still as long as they didn't mess with the movie itself, I don't care.
