The Pyramids formed in Long Beach, CA in 1961. In early 1964, they made the Billboard Top 20 with their instrumental hit "Penetration." "Bikini Drag" is from the film, "Bikini Beach." In a FILMFAXplus (April/June 2004) interview, director William Asher revealed that the script was originally written for The Beatles but they dropped out as their rapidly growing fame caused their fee to exceed the film's budget. Asher was forced to rework the script. Frankie Avalon's dual role as an English singer named "The Potato Bug" was created to replace the four Beatles in the story.

Kind of like the Devo of their time. Minus the flower pot hats. And apparently had wireless instrument cables 30 years before anyone else. How cool is that?

That is an intriguing thought - having The Beatles appear in this movie, having a cultural clash with Frankie & Annette's crowd, & being " fish out of water " around the surf music scene!

No, they weren't in the Army. They shaved their heads in response to the British invasion and hair styling that they disliked. They also wore Beatles sort of wigles that they all removed at the same time showing their heads. I love 'em, they were terrific.

No. But the members of The Essex who scored with “Easier Said Than Done” and “Walking Miracle” were all in the Marines at the time. The Del Vikings met while they were in the USAF. Buddy Knox, during part of his recording career, was in the Army as a Captain.

@@StratBurst92 The sound of a teletype! That was so clever. Rodney Vickers and Walter Taylor of The Essex were also musicians (guitar and drums). I wonder if Roulette ripped them off or if they were ever able to get back royalties on their records? Taylor was killed in 1966 and Anita Hines died in 2010.

Even though these movies were comical , the darker side is that they were made to make hippies look like idiots and of no avail. I will say PSY warfare. Some will understand and some will not. The thing I don't get is who the hell are the PYRAMIDS ? ! :O)
