I remember in high school I was being super nosy in math class, and this dude had said his grandparents had a litter of Great Pyrenees. I googled it then and there, I just saw fluff and white. I told him I'd love one, and the next day he dropped this big old 3-month puppy at my house. Before he left, he said "this one a devil". I remember being worried because I didn't know he was a giant breed, but the moment he came into my house I knew he wasn't going anywhere. It was hell raising him lol, he would escape daily and he would never listen. Sochi still to this day just listens to himself. But my god is he just a ball of love and sass. @@ebonysharee My brother in law is training a huge Doberman puppy. This dog is an enormous and ultra strong puppy who's very happy and energetic. He's wears a collar that buzzes, or in extreme circumstances a mild electric shock can be given to get the animal's attention. If you get one, make sure you try shocking yourself first to feel what the animal feels. Dogs are much like children. They must be trained firmly but lovingly to behave properly. A good parent learns how to fairly discipline. My dog is a rescued stray. She had some bad traits at 1st that she had learned from just trying to survive all on her own as a very small puppy. The worst behaviors were getting into our human food and jumping up on the table. It took a couple months of consistent training for us to train her in acceptable behavior. Since she's not a very big dog, we didn't need a shock collar.

to everyone saying dogs dislike hugs: it definitely depends on the dog. my dog (who passed away in may of 2019) LOVED hugs and would lean into them and almost hug us. she was like that her whole life. my new puppy (about six months) is the same way. she comes over to us just to be hugged and to be close. then again my nanas dog who i’ve known since she was a puppy isn’t really comfortable with it. really it just depends on the dog i think.

@@sarahdee374 I live in the suburbs and currently have three Pyrs. They are very intelligent and trainable for someone who knows what they are doing. I certainly don’t understand your comment about the “safety” of neighbors. Pyrs aren’t aggressive dogs. A well bred Pyr (or any other LGD breed) does not use bite as a deterrent. It is a last resort. That would be dangerous to livestock. They use their size and bark to intimidate and distract predators. Additionally, Pyrs who are properly trained and socialized are either friendly when introduced to strangers or aloof. It is literally in the breed standard. They shouldn’t be aggressive or hostile unless there is a threat. If they are, it is either a poorly bred dog or a dog that was not properly socialized. Evidently, you don’t have much experience with well bred LGDs and probably should keep your uninformed opinion to yourself.

@@DangerousCurves357 Apparently my neighbor Pyr is not well trained. As stated she comes up a mountain slope onto my property and charges me very aggressively. Once she even put her mouth around my arm. She seems to have decided that my land is part of her's to defend. Her people feel all one needs to do is love a dog enough and all will be well. To them she is a sweet and cuddly family protector. That's all fine, except she has decided I am the enemy. I have been to their place and been introduced but that seems to have made no difference. I've notified them I'm keeping pepper spray and a shovel nearby when I work on that side of my property, and will use either as a defense. They seem more motivated now to keep her away. I definitely agree that a territorial and powerful dog should be well trained to immediately obey a "stay" command and be clear on property lines. But some do not agree.

I bred these beauties for almost 20 years. We lived in larger houses but not on a farm and they did great. They make very good service dogs for children. They are gentle and have the instinct to guard. My daughter had a breathing disorder and her pyr Destiny slept with her and would wake her if she stopped breathing. He was not trained his mother did it before he was born and he did it by guarding her since he was a puppy. They are so gentle.

How on earth do they make good service dogs though? Aren't the extremely high maintainence, extreme stubborness, and protective instincts *huge* disqualifiers for service work. The constant barking seems like it would be a problem as well... I'm not sure I would trust these guys to quietly alert me of an upcoming meltdown, walk me through the steps to cope with a severe meltdown, or guide me out of a grocery stores if my brain isn't fully there... What if they try to kill someone because of my nonstop severe anxiety and complete distrust of people? Also, people might try to murder me if they accompanied me in a restaurant. None of those people care about ADA law.... They want to *kill* service dogs and their "incompetent" handlers. It's rare, but a very real possibility.

She comes from a line of working dogs but has no aggression towards other animals or humans because Service Dog training is quite intense and you"ll know fairly quickly if the dog is a fit for the task or not. I would assume if one picked a working GP off a farm that it was trained on, it would not do well as a service dog, but starting as a puppy with training makes all the difference in the world.

There’s an amazing story about a GP who refused his owners command to get in the car for a Wilde Fire evacuation because he did not want to abandon his flock. Despite the house and most of the property being destroyed by the fire he found the dog the flock and a couple of does that he adopted in. The dog corralled them safely near a pile of boulders and kept them safe despite his coat getting slightly singed and heat blisters on his paws. One of the best stories from the Tubbs Fire of 2017.

Accurate and informative but they left out important facts for anyone considering adopting this wonderful breed. Shelters are full of surrendered dogs because people wanting a pet don't understand they are getting a dog with working characteristics. The reporter should have shown some footage of Great Pyrenees in protection mode. Their show of aggression is very scary (as it should be). People think they are getting a teddy bear (or snuggly polar bear), but in fact they are getting a dog with hundreds or thousands of years of breeding as a guardian. GPs have a bite strength stronger than that of a Pitbull or a Rottweiler. They can break the spine of a strange dog, coyote, wolf, or bear. Or human. They do not welcome strange people unless the dog is properly socialized and their human partner accepts the stranger. As they said, these dogs are stubborn and independent. Recall is difficult for them to learn. An off-leash Pyr is a disapyr and they are agile houdinis at getting out of fencing. They will learn basic obedience but disregard it if something they think is more important comes along (like protecting their human from something they hear or smell a mile away or more). They will remember bad treatment and behave aggressively afterward. People are sometimes harsh with them in frustration over obedience issues, which makes matters worse. Many have been euthanized because inexperienced owners failed to understand the nature of these magnificent dogs and how to train them. Teenage Great Pyrenees (6-24 months old) can be especially trying. This breed does not mature until 2 or 3 years old. Praise and partnership is what works for these dogs. They do tend to accept the young of any species except birds. GPs consider birds as prey or predators (especially raptors). They will be gentle and tolerant of human children and strange puppies unless they have been mistreated (see above). They may even protect newborn lambs or kids (baby goats) from their mothers until they are taught otherwise. However, always supervise, as individual Pyrs may not behave to breed standards on this if ill or mistreated or feeling threatened. I'd post a photo of my companion Pyr if KZfaq comments allowed it. She is truly elegant, regal, magnificent, and well socialized. An amazing breed if you know what you are getting into.

What you say is true I'm sure. I've had 2 Pyr's and I can't even imagine them being aggressive, but it makes a lot of sense if you stop and think it over. They certainly have the physical ability and the personality for those things to happen if it all went the wrong way.

@laurelinlorefield318 4 жыл бұрын
@Gi Gi You are right. Each Pyr's personality is different and is a combination of innate traits and influences from the humans and environment around them. Most can be trained to protect chickens, ducks, geese, and such. But on a farm, most Pyr puppies can't be trusted to not play with and eat them until they are 2-3 years old.
@aracarbonneau3282
@aracarbonneau3282 4 жыл бұрын
I have 5 Pyrs. I have raised each one. I think you are using the word aggressive when you mean reactive. Reactivity is the way in which Pyrs get the attention of their handlers and say, hey, there is danger here and I need to tell you about it. My Pyrs could care less about my tropical birds but again, i put all my Pyrs through a 2 year training process including a specific training process to get them off the leash. We train them as both LGDs and as service dogs for those with epilepsy. Youre right about the juvenile stage, that is the challenging stage and typically they are bolters as most people dont have the time to work with a Pyr daily. Luckily, its my full time work. Definitely true on gentle voices and positive reinforcement training. All of my Pyrs are public accessed trained as Service Dogs so they go to grocery stores, departments stores, malls, public transit, you name it. Not sure about the strength of bite as the breed has flat teeth to the front and sharper teeth to the back with traditional canines. They are however prone to a lot of health issues that should be addressed early to prevent shortened life spans.

My husky loves all dogs and people. He’s such a sweetheart and he just turned 1. He drives my boyfriend and I crazy because he constantly wants attention so we thought maybe a baby brother. I’ve always wanted a GP but I hope this puppy will not see my husky as a wolf one day. Or am I worried for nothing?

I used to have a Great Pyrenees for a period of time. I actually found him when driving home one night and thought a horse had just crossed the road ahead of me. When I stopped the huge Pyrenees walked up to me with no tags in the middle of nowhere. I open that back of my Subaru and he just hopped in. He also had the softest pads on his feet, so I felt he had led a cushy life before, can't imagine anyone just dumping him. I tried for several weeks to find an owner without success. I eventually found a doctor that wanted to adopt him and after checking out her home I let her have him. They just loved him. He was an awesome dog and got along great with my Giant female Mal.

@@elhombredeoro955 You are absolutely correct. I named this Pyrenees "Kona." One day when I took him and my Alaskan Malamute "K'ra" for a walk in the open country all of a sudden they disappeared. I hopped into my 4x4 and went looking for them searching further and further out. After several hours and darkness I returned home about a mile away. Luckily both were already tagged, and licensed. I went out the following morning searching most of the day without any luck. Quite a while later I received a phone call from someone several miles away asking me if I was missing a coupe of dogs. How they managed to travel so far and in the wrong direction I do not know, K'ra has never wandered away. I suspect maybe Kona was trying to find his way home, who knows or maybe he just wandered away. Anyway, Happy Reunion, but Kona I never let him out of my sight period even for a short time. I think K'ra would not have followed him again anyway.

I love my Great Pyrenees! He’s been my unofficial service dog since I’ve been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He’s big enough for me to lean on when I can’t walk straight or am struggling with my balance; on fatigue days, he’ll lounge next to me but get up and check the house to make sure things are in order; he checks on me all the time and makes sure I’m not feeling sick or unwell. He’s also so cuddly and lovable and it helped my mental health so much when I was going through an ms episode. I didn’t have to train him to do any of this either, he’s just naturally this way, truly an amazing breed

The term I've heard is "barking at leaf ninjas." They bark at everything and anything. If you want to know whether or not something untoward is going on three blocks away, get a big white livestock guardian dog breed (Pyr, Hungarian Kuvasz, Maremma, etc.) and they'll always tell you. Our Kuvasz literally barks sometimes when people stop at the gas station down the hill from us 100 yards away and pump gas.

agree! I live next door to one of these. The owners insist she is loving and sweet. They believe the problem is that she can sense my fear. DUH! However, she has decided that my property is part of what she needs to protect and I am what she is protecting her family from. Believe me, she is NOT sweet and loving if you are who she decides is the enemy. I've been introduced and she still will charge me with hackles raised. I now keep my pepper spray at hand when I'm outdoors. She also barks a LOT. Very annoying dog to live near, imho. Should live miles away from others if one wants to be a considerate neighbor.

I screamed as loud as i could. The neighbor next to their house came out and rescued me and my dog. She said their owners were on vacation and the dogs were left outside. This breed mix can be problematic with both herding and guarding instincts and an unpredictable combination of the two. Sometimes it works out for a pet, but a mixed breed dogs tasked with actually guarding livestock can have confusion from conflicting instincts. Herding dogs use some predator body language with livestock to get them to move. Livestock guardians don't use that body language and are more readily accepted by sheep or goats. A mix can run the livestock ragged. I am glad your mix has worked out well.

Can you kindly share how your dog helps with PTSD?
@canoslo6126
@canoslo6126 3 жыл бұрын
@@greencarpetgrowing4539 I’ll try! 😎 Well, to start, Anatolians are huge, which is an automatic deterrent. They also guard by perimeter, accelerating their response depending on how close the perceived threat is. They are also constantly on duty, which helps my hyper-vigilance decrease. As an independent thinking breed sensitive to threat, I know I can trust it when my Anatolian alerts me to someone as dangerous to me or just off somehow. It never ceases to amaze me, but my Anatolian knows the difference between a plain anxiety attack and a PTSD one and varies his tactics accordingly. If it’s regular anxiety, he leans like a fuzzy weighted blanket to comfort me. But if it is a PTSD panic, he gets physically intrusive, nudging, head butting my arm, nose in face, even whacking me with a paw until he brings me back to the present. Then he comforts me and goes to lie down. He is a rescue. He did not come trained to do this, though I do reinforce his behavior appropriately. He just knows what I need somehow. Amazing dog. That said, while I am a HUGE fan of Anatolians and LGD breeds, they are not the breed for everyone. You’ve pretty much got to be a crazy dog person with some space around your house and a high tolerance for fur as they shed a lot. You need to be very dog savvy and have the ability to lead firmly but benevolently. They require respect- lose theirs, and they cease to listen. This is not a pushbutton breed. They also tend to be nocturnal by instinct as that was when predators were likely to attack their flocks. This means that if a raccoon gets into a garbage can three towns west of you at 3am, you will hear about it. Loudly.

The other day when my sister came over to suprise me for my birthday, Baylee, my Great Pyre, jumped on my bed, (which she knows shes not supposed to and wont do it if I'm around at least) when she heard her come in, she backed up against me and watched my bedroom door and barked. It was such an amazing moment. She is also the sweetest and gentlest dog. She still has some trust issues because of her previous owner (she was surrendered to the shelter) and will get mad/scared if I touch her collar to lead her to her dog bed when shes in trouble. Shes a lot better now than when I first got her, but she still has much to learn and lots of love to receive. 🤗

My family and I rescued a Great Pyrenees when she was 5 months old and we absolutely love the giant beast. She has been a wonderful guard dog and protected us many times and she loves playing with her slightly bigger sister who is a English Mastiff.

I've had 3 males at once. They were the love of my life ( after my wife ...at that time. Of course.) Everything this woman said is the truth. And I have carried a Great Pyrenees, front paws on my shoulders, dew claws digging into my sides carrying all 125 lbs of him. As he was watching a friend, picking up his sleeping daughter from a sofa. Stroking his head and telling him what a good boy he was, He never took his eyes off of her.

I have a Great Pyrenees as well. Her name is minnie! Minnie was raised on a farm but was surrendered because she was too interested in the chickens! She is such a funny big girl and loves to roll on her back on the grass outside. She only barks 1 time every month ( I’m being serious). Minnie sheds a lot since they have 2 coats. We have to brush her atleast 2 times a week and vacuum atleast 2 times aswell every week. Everytime when I put on my shoes and get my purse, Minnie knows that I’m leaving and she tries to stop me by sitting down right infront of the door to the garage! She LOVES car rides and will stick her whole body out and have the time of her life! since I live in Texas and the heat here gets super super hot, I can only take her on 2 walks max everyday because I don’t want her taking any damage from how hot it is. Minnie is absolutely amazing and I love her with my whole heart! She’s a huge teddy bear if you think about it that way!

I grew up with one of these (although I knew her as a great pyrenees). She was a twin, dwarf, and runt of the litter so she never got much bigger than a pitbull. But, oh, she was the sweetest thing. All the neighborhood walkers loved her, and when she managed to escape she was so well known to them that they always walked her back to our door. The cats enjoyed to sleep with her, and she had such a gentle way of accepting treats and asking for popcorn on movie nights. I hope one day when I have a big enough yard I'll be able to adopt one again. Thank you for posting this video and showing everyone how lovely this breed is.

Curtis Forbes I have a question and hope you or someone can answer it. My GP is a year old but I see that in the video it looks bigger than mine is it because he's still a ”puppy” or he's just smaller? Like when do they stop growing?

We shared my son's big boy Duncan for years, and I've never known a better dog. Yes, he barked all night (music to my ears). Yes, he slow-walked if called when he was comfortable. He had to be disciplined pretty strictly when he was a pup because... that's the only opportunity you get. I have an inner picture of him appearing at my bedside with wide "pet me" smile. My husband came home with a tiny orphan goat one time. The next time I saw him he was bundled between Duncan's big chest and front paws. A s neighbor got too close and I heard a most menacing growl. That was it! No one stuck around to find out whether he was bluffing (he wasn't). We lost him in January. He'll always be in our hearts.
