The QK80 - My Experience

This is the QK80. It's a wild keyboard for it's price point of roughly 160 to start. Bluetooth, two batteries, amazing finishes, tons of options and fun modular mounting styles. However, I wasn't 100% sold on it. Yes this keyboard sounds better with foam, but the no foam experience left me with an empty feeling. It wasn't bad, but I wasn't in love.
To note, I know people LOVE foam, I also love some foam in my builds, but it would be nice to have the option to not use some too. That is where my dislike of flex cuts come in. They really make it so you need to use foam or tape up the PCB (which has a particular sound to it). You start to lose some of the uniqueness of the keyboard and it just does nothing for me. Now, this is all preference and you have to understand this is my view point and there is a HUGE market for people who love foam and flex cuts. But it is my ideology that a properly made mounting system does more for flex than flex cuts any day.
Overall this is still a great bargain for what you get and the more I look at the keyboard, the more I love it visually.

Im going to say this since it seems some people are not really grasping this. This is my opinion on the board. It seems a lot of people just want a show case with no commentary which I simply won't do. This isn't suppose to be some in depth break down of every config, this is my experience live streaming the board for the first time. I recommend Near Lucids videos for that on the QK80. On top of that, I really don't like seeing people resort to name calling and ignorant comments when it comes to differing opinions. I've personally stated so many times that I understand the points for and against things like flex cuts and foam. I for one defended foam when it was "trendy" to hate on it and I still do. I even stated during the live stream that I understand who flex cuts are for, they are just something i've grown tired of. But what a dull hobby this will be if we can't express our opinions or thoughts about something without being harassed by the other side. So please be civil and understand people will have differing views than you. It's a hobby based around preference and we are allowed to like and dislike things.

thanks for doing this. There are plenty of creators who make build videos with zero commentary, and everyone can choose to watch whoever. No ones forcing anyone to watch any video or follow a content creator in particular. The whole point is different people can offer different perspectives and opinions on a board. If everyone just said the same shit then we don't need 50 content creators making videos on the SAME BOARDS. If anything I feel this hobby have the opposite problem - most of the time content makers will just offer the same praises to every single board they build. Whats the point??? Please keep voicing your opinions. And for the people watching, no, you don't have to AGREE with it (shocking I know), I don't agree with everything I hear from reviewers either, but I much rather hear these different perspective than the endless "wow this is the greatest keyboard I've ever built" in every single f***ing keebs video.

I have two keyboards, one with a ton of flex cuts and one completely without. I gotta say, the one with flex cuts is a lot more comfortable to type on, and my WPM is faster with it too. Sound wise, I definitely needed some foam to make it sound less thin, but I didn't mind the extra bit of work. I think it's tough for companies to gamble on a no flex cut pcb because everyone's sound preference is different. People who buy keyboards based on videos (which is 99% of us) may like how it sounds through a mic, but it is very different to actually hearing it in person. It's definitely better to leave the choice of customization open imho

Like you said, Qwertykeys has talked about using PCBs without any flex cuts at all due to demand, but ultimately decided to stay with them as users have the option to close them with tape as opposed to...adding cuts. I don't blame them for trying to trying to appeal to the most customers and at this price-point that is the goal - make it as accessible as possible and tunable for the mass populace. If it were a top class board meant to appeal to the premium sector (say a price of $300+?), then we would have much higher expectations on out-of-the-box sound & feel (especially no-foam sound). I think this board is visually awesome, but the sound is pretty much what you expect from this price. It's fine, not great, not bad. With modding it can even sound "good". And if you particularly enjoy the marble sound that QK/Owlabs is famous for, then this will surely deliver that experience as well.

My opinion on the whole flex cut not flex cut debate is that I understand both sides but overall it’s not that big a deal. Especially when the Qk80 comes with options of non flex cut or flex cut PCBs. So I’ve already got a nice custom that I like and I got the Qk80 for my mom to use at work to be easier on her hands and wrist vs the shitty membrane she uses. The flex cuts to the PCB really aid in the endeavor because it leads to that softer typing feel even when using a case foam which she definitely needs to use because she works in an office and on calls. The flex cuts really allow me to build it with every foam including a case foam and still get really good flex performance to help her hands. It’s not for everyone but special use cases like this especially for people outside of the hobby that are buying for specific purposes really can get a lot out of the variety.

I think the flex cuts are more appealing to those more new to the KB hobby since REALLY budget boards from brands like CIY or Gamakay don't typically have those. The value you get for any of the QK boards is really insane, and it gives beginners a chance to see if they like the flex cuts or if they don't, in which case they'll learn how to counteract that for this kit and hone their preferences for future builds.

Changed my akko mod007 for tiger80 and now i wont go for a keeb without flex cuts (ik that tiger's gasket mount is way better but still). @@offbrandbiscuit in this case of an argument i'll take example of flexcuts.. i think designer can have tradeoff between flex(not bounce) and the board sound. As Keyboard hobby doesnt necessarily mean only good sound, there's so much aspect such as typing exp and finish, material etc that some ppl tend to not pay special attention(compared to sound).. If the designer decided to use flex cut to improve the board flex and typing exp and having that kind of trade off.. then it's fine. Sound is not all there is to a board. So basically it's just a market option and preference which designer product did you support. You can look for board that have no flex cut e.g envoy/sonnet etc, or you can find a board that using flexcuts and foam, or you don't even care about sound you just want something that looks good and with perfect finishing etc

I was the same way when I entered the hobby. Then you try more stuff and see every foam board sounds the same and flex cuts literally do nothing at all 99% of the time. Flex cuts make me cry

@bosenngantor9160 Жыл бұрын
honestly it's sounds bad on stock condition...the flex cut pcb mainly, kills it. definitely needs mods and fine tuning, of course most of us in the hobby knew what's needed to improve the sound by ourself, but for somebody think they'd get nice sound right out of the box and do nothing outside the build, this isn't it. But dang it looks pretty, and that price is honestly a steal

He definitely should have used the plate foam, kind of did the board a disservice by trying to go with alu plate no foams when the pcb and plate both have flex cuts. Most people that this appeals to would probably build it with all foams first.
@bosenngantor9160
@bosenngantor9160 Жыл бұрын
@@snakeplissken5969 but thing is...any board with full foams will sounds nice. I think the trend nowadays is trying to use less and less foam, because more people now seems to prefer clack/ bright sounds. I know owlabs is known for their foam tho so it's kinda not surprising this one needs it to sounds nice, my QK65 is also definitely needs it, I'm not confident enough to use it without foam in it.
@haihao2942

yeah trend come and goes, but i mean does it hurt to even use only case/plate foam? without pe foam i think it's still fine.. people really love to go to one extreme either all foam or no foam at all. i for one still hate no foam experience the sound is thin i can't hear nothing when i work and used a headset/headphone.. people used to go far by modding the hell out of their board putting polyfill, silicone layer/mould into the board now there's no customization/mod. practically you go with no foam, and just mod your gasket config and that's it
@bosenngantor9160
@bosenngantor9160 Жыл бұрын
@@haihao2942 that's it, If the board sounds bad with no foam, for me that's bad case design. I'm not using any foam on my Tomo and Sonnet. And well, it's not hurt to use a foam, yes...but once you started to use it, you'll almost always realize "ohh my boards sounds all the same now", what's bad about adding foam is it's negate any advantage using various switch on the market, reduce any switch potential. With the foam, you can go mr suit with some cheap-ass outemu switch and it's still sounds "holy marbly, thoccky, etc." Again it's not bad using the foam when it's all about preference, but there's a clear reason for ppl not using it, I'm tired with muted and thocc sounds tho, my god it's everywhere for me now that's not what I looking for in my board.

I wish these makers tried to make a well sound designed board, instead of going with whats trending. Pe foam, foam, flex cuts, tape mods, force break, mid plate foam needs to go. Well designed boards dont need this, and should take the time to design something good. All the top tier boards have none of this.
@haihao2942

What you want is high pitched-clacky board out of the box, there's still ppl who prefer deeper sounding/pe foam signature sound. then how will you satisfy these kind of markets?
@vectivuz1858
@vectivuz1858 Жыл бұрын
These boards are purposely designed to be used with foam. Is it bad? It depends on your preference. The market demands creamy deep sounding keyboards since so many are new to the hobby. Nothing which is not inherently bad needs to go. (E.g. people preferring the inclusion of PE foam, tape mod etc.). What you should be demanding is diversity in design.

if you don't want the tape mod sound then u will need to spend a bit of time cutting small tapes just to cover the flex cut holes and not tape over the switch socket. if you had tested the keyboard foamless on the felt keebmat. it will sound really bad. If they say that it is to give people option to mod, why give the option for the keyboard to sound bad. i'd call copium. they probably already have all the PCB designed way before hand in the pipeline and slowly rolling them out and they can't back off with the flex cut pcb now as they are already been designed and do not want to re-design them

I guess it's a good thing that "good" and "bad" are always subjective; some people may like how the "bad-sounding" option sounds more than the "good-sounding" one.

Dumb take on flex cuts Alex
@alexotos
@alexotos Жыл бұрын
It's all preference. I am personally just tired of them on every single board. They just don't add anything to me. Flex cuts work as some relief to a stiffer typing experience, but seem to only work with no foams in a case. The trade off is sound, which is ALL preference. A better more flexy mounting system seems to be the best solution while giving people tons of options on how to make the board sound.
