'The Queen at Tilsburie' - English Royalist Song

‘The Queen at Tilsburie’ is an English Royalist song written by Thomas Delony in August of 1588. The song recounts the visit of Queen Elizabeth I to the men at Tilbury and her famous speech to the army. It also describes other events of the Anglo-Spanish war, such as the Spanish Armada and the English navy, along with other soldiers and officers. The song also seems to have been written within a few hours of the Queens visit itself.
Recording done by the band ‘Peasants All’ I don’t own the music in any way.

It really cannot be overstated what a pivotal moment the Tilsbury speech was in the English imagination. To the average English soldier, it must have seemed as if God had abandoned them; The hated Spanish, rich in gold and with the backing of the papal church, had assembled a fleet to invade this outpost of Protestant liberty, behead their queen, uproot their religion and consign all the faithful to Bloody Mary’s pyres. The threat had never been greater. And then, at that hour, the Queen herself came amongst them to personally give succour and courage. For the first time since Henry V gave a speech to his army on the eve of Agincourt, the English monarch spoke directly to the people to rally and inspire them. This was something that Philip II would never have done, no prince of Europe of that day would have felt it necessary to do so yet Elizabeth “only a weak and feeble woman” stood among her army of Englishmen and inspired them to her cause. Now, was the speech itself important to victory? Not really, the military strategy of Drake’s fire ships combined with the “Protestant storms” being favourable to the English pretty much assured that the armada was dead on arrival… quite literally. But the propaganda victory this had for Elizabeth was unparalleled and if she wasn’t already, this moment cemented her as one of the most beloved sovereigns in English, and monarchical, history for though England may have had mightier princes, “ye shall never have one that loves you more.”

Her speech is incredibly moving, and unlike many supposed monarchs war speeches, most respected historians fully believe those were her words.
