We speak with Guyanese environmental lawyer Melinda Janki about how she’s taking on the oil giant ExxonMobil to stop the company from developing an offshore oil field that would turn Guyana into a “carbon bomb.” Guyana is currently a carbon sink, but Exxon plans to produce more than 1 million barrels of oil a day, which could transform the South American country into one of the world’s top oil producers by 2030. Janki is suing the Guyanese government and Exxon under the constitution’s guarantee of a healthy environment to both current and future citizens. Her legal battle is profiled in a new article in Wired, “The Quest to Defuse Guyana’s Carbon Bomb,” written by independent journalist Antonia Juhasz, who also joins us.

While every other country is getting rich from their natural resources Guyana must think of world health and remain in poverty for everlasting!

Ms Jankie doesn't just want to make Exxon accountable, she wants them to stop producing the oil which will keep Guyana from developing. In other words, she wants to keep Guyana underdeveloped and backwards. Regulation of the oil industry is what's needed, not stopping it as she wants.

Thank you for putting this information out. As part of the Guyanese diaspora in the US this has been. A most troubling issue.

Thankyou DN for highlighting this very serious issue. The world bank, exxon, gates & the rest has never asked a Caribbean or an African country 'how can we help you' without first asking how can we help ourselves!!! That lawsuit needs to succeed & exxon needs to find to pay reparations!

This story is extremely important and needs to get a lot more exposure. Two important things were left out, however. Something very similar is happening in East Africa. It's called the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), and climate activists in Europe & Africa have been fighting an uphill battle to stop it.

The reality is that Guyana has developed Exxon finances astronomically whilst the citizens get crumbs and the politicians are filthy rich.

Thanks Amy for inviting Malinda and Antonio to your show. These two smart courageous women have exposed how the World bank and Exon have been preparing and financing the drilling of the largest under water oil deposits ever to be discovered. Malinda has administered a legal suit against Exon and the World Bank on the grounds drilling violates the natural rights of Guyana's environment which makes it essential that she win her legal claim against them On the other hand because this oil deposit in Guyana marks one of richest oil deposits ever discovered means its essential that Exon and the World Bank win their legal right to drill, regardless of the environmental damage it causes the natural rights of Guyana. Its clear as we watched the destruction to the gulf coast a decade ago caused by an explosion in the deep sea horizon, and the horrific destruction to Ecuador's rain forest thirty years ago caused by Chevron's cost cutting drilling violations that Guyana could be next in line to suffer irreparable environmental destruction should Exon be given approval to drill. Moreover this bonanza of new oil will only fuel the global climate crisis. Its apparent that Exon and the World Bank, consumed by geed, are obsessed with maximizing profits at the expense of the rest of the world.

The Guyanese public are not aware of the impact of climate change. Melinda has been doing a great job of enlightening the world of what is to come. All Guyana needs to be more involved, in getting this message over. Melinda needs Guyanes support.

Kudos to you to take on both Exxon and Guyana!! Thanks for being a voice for the people not only of Guyana, but also the world! To think that the World Bank is selling away the rights of the future of Guyanese people who, by the way, are not the ones who are benefitting from this venture! Shame on you, Exxon!! How can you sleep at nights!!
