On those rare occurrences when the power goes out at an NFL game, everything stops. But in 2008, during a blackout at Orchard Park, NY, the Bills and Chargers saw things in a different light.

It is kind of crazy. I live in the west coast and get to see Seahawks games for example, and that audio they let teams use in place of fans simply cannot replicate that noise level. I really find it unnerving and I cant shake it as the games progress...

even most high school games have a PA announcer or some type of commentary to announce things. I think what they said at the end should totally be true. As both a fan of UK football (soccer) and NFL this is a fascinating watch. This right here is essentially how every soccer fan over here watches the game. Music is only on pre match and during Half time and the only reason the PA would ever come on during play is for important announcements (safety concerns etc.). You are there to watch your team, cheer, sing and be part of the atmosphere and that is it. I wish advertisers weren't as prevalent in US sport as they are.

Starting QB Trent Edwards suffered a severe concussion in week 5 vs the Cardinals. They won the quiet game in week 6, but after that Edwards was never the same QB. He was hit again in the next game and that was that. He was timid, scared in the pocket and never threw downfield. It was the birth of what came to be known as "captain checkdown" where nearly every pass was a 3 yard slant or bubble. And when he did throw down field, he had so little confidence that they floated and caused a lot of INTs. Defenses started crowding the short passes and it took away the entire offense

I remember this game. That was one of the most bizarre chain of events that fans of both the Chargers and Bills had to go through that day. I really did feel bad for Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf that they had to wait a while before coming back on the air for the CBS telecast. And i also did feel bad for the fans that were watching the game from their homes cause i don't know if NFL mobile, twitter, or Facebook even existed at that time. They couldn't listen to the radio at that time. So what could they do? Unless you were at the game. And who's idea was that to tie a pair of black balloons up on the telephone wire. What was there? A party? Lol. OK maybe not. But that game was a throwback to the old days. No game or play clock. Keeping time on the field and having a back judge count from 25 to 1 in his head. Old school football right there. But I tip my hat to the fans and to CBS for hanging in there during that very difficult time.

I remember something like this happened to the Raiders and Panthers last year with the t.v issue. I was watching the game and out of no where the screen turned yellow and stayed like that until end of game.

Nothing better than an early Saturday game on dead grass and at least one team getting blown out by 40+

How did they get the footage of the field during the power outage
@Dab3stxblasassassin7 жыл бұрын
same way you can use your cellphone during a power outage. Cameras have their own batteries, they just couldn't televise the game.
@mi4johns7 жыл бұрын
ya, there's an NFL Films crew at every game with their own portable cameras & that's what the footage appears to be from
@andrewgonyea7 жыл бұрын
I think the production trucks and cameras are gas powered if I remember correctly
@TheLocalLt6 жыл бұрын
They actually did televise the game but they had to have James Brown call the game from the NYC studio

Ever hear of a portable camera?

For those players and fans there was nothing dissimilar from this game to the six-year olds in a park playing with a scoreboard made of paper flip cards. There’s something beautiful about that

2008 was my first year as a season ticket holder. I was in a car next to the transformer when it got hit by the balloon. There was an explosion sound and the vibration from the explosion was unbelievable. Great game though!

About a throwback game, the Chicago White Sox had a 1919 throwback game where the PA Announcers had to use huge manauel meagphones to announce players and the usual stuff we take for granted.

Starting QB suffered 2 pretty severe concussions just before this game. He was never going to be good, but he was playing well to start the year. After this game its like the concussions flipped a switch in his head. First 6 games, ratings were 96, 120, 81,82, 92 and 114. Next 6 weeks were 67, 79, 49, 50, 121, 64. Yards per attempt dropped from 7.7 pre concussion to 5.4 post concussion. And he went from a 5/2 TD/INT split to 6/8. With the Qb falling apart, teams could lock down the run so a team that started the season averaging close to 26 points a game suddenly couldnt break 20 with any regularity. He fell apart after the concussions and went from a Middle to low end starting caliber QB showing promise and improvement to out of the league and he took the team down with him.

I don't really see the difference in watching the game. The only thing is that there would be no music and no kiss cam type stuff. Don't get how it would be a dramatic change for the fans at the stadium. It would be just like high school which isn't crazy different from NFL games

I wish all sports was like this. The obsession with noise in our culture is mind boggling. NBA games are a joke with the music playing during the games, etc. NOISE POLLUTION SUCKS!
