***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

We live in Georgia so long term hard freezes are normally not a problem. I like the idea of a 5 gal buffer rather than running directly from the hose spigot to a pressure regulator. If the power goes out, i will have a week to address the issue. I will use a float regulator I have from the chickens watering project. That way, the hose can remain on and the bucket full without any effort. A side note: poke a vent hole in the lid to break a suction problem.

Stick a coloured plastic bead in the hose with the water level so you can see the level easier.

You may want to use black tubing as algae can grow in clear tubing. I would also consider using construction water cooler that are used by construction workers as they are insulated. You could also use fish tank heater in the winter time to keep the water from freezing in the container. Also using heat tape on the tubing to prevent the lines from freezing also. Foam pipe insulation covering your pipes will will help to prevent freezing of your tubing. If you install a cock valve assembly inside of your water container, you could leave your hose on all of the time during warmer weather. During hot weather frozen milk jugs could be placed inside the water container to cool the water for the rabbits. These are things I am planning on doing as I live in cold climate. I am just starting out. I found your site to be a great source of information!

My system was similar but instead of a trash can I used a 5 gallon bucket. I put a toilet valve in the bottom and hooked it up to a pressure water supply. When the rabbits drank enough the toilet valve would open and automatically refill the bucket. If I need to dose the rabbits I would turn off the feed valve and dose for 5 gallons. When it was empty I would turn supply back on.

Looks Good! One tip- at the end of my last t valve, I brought the line out a little further, bent it in half, and put one of the big black metal paper clips on it. Then when I want all the lines to fill up with water, or just want to get sediment out of the line, I just take the clip off and straighten it out, and the water runs through the system quickly and gets all the air out.

i suggest you put a lid on the trash can to keep the dust and what not out of the water that will make its way to the drippers and clog them up. check the water can about once a week if you have any troubles with mice on the farm or they may contaminate the water if they fall in. nice job, sarah is gonna love it.

Two things you may want to keep in mind: If that is a forty gallon can, it could weigh ~336# when full. Also I would fashion a lid to prevent rodent suicides and other foreign material from entering the water supply. I have wanted to take on a similar project to make care for my bunnies easier, but am still trying to come up with a solution that will work in our northeast winters. I plan to incorporate a heater, a circ pump and as much insulation as possible.

There is a lid on the can. I guess you just can't see it on the video. We use rubber bowls in the winter. Water bottles freeze in the winter to but the bowls are a good solution for us. I don't thing there is a good "easy " system for winter.

Sarah is going to love her surprise when she gets back. Great job done Kevin! Yeah that water leveling tube is the trick. I showed this a few times in my videos where I use them on my DWC totes to keep track of the water level. The only thing I see you might have a problem with is having the trash can up so high will make it get hotter in the summer. Not sure if that will effect the rabbits or not drink hot water but ya can always throw some ice in it to cool it off during the hottest days.

I use the same system but didn't know about black tubing which prevents slime buildup. So if you still have rabbits and if you are having issues with slime inside your lines, try switching to the black line. I am trying to find a system that I can hook directly to the pressurized water line/water hose. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them, thanks. Great video!

Nice setup. Similar to what I've seen before, and what I plan to do. If you have cattle, a mineral lick bucket may work better for you than that trash can, or even one of the 55 gallon plastic drums. One of my big concerns is that the waterers I have used have had leaking issues quite a bit, leading to a mess below that shouldn't be happening. Currently waiting on some different nozzles that are *rumored* to not leak so badly. Also concerned about freezing, and setting things up so that it is easy to expand the rabbitry as needed, adding or removing hoses etc. May want to add a valve just below the can in case you need to shut things off for a quick fix without getting everything wet. Little quality-of-life things like that add up. Hope it goes well for you!
