The racing line is one of the first things you need to get right to be fast on track. This racing line tutorial explains where you should turn-in, apex and exit a corner.
Our first Driver’s Uni tutorials cover the very basics of circuit driving. Even if you’re an experienced circuit driver we recommend watching, as it’s important to understand the principles behind your driving.
This video tutorial will cover some racing line tips including:
- What is the racing line
- What is the apex of a corner
- The braking point, turn-in and exit phases of a turn
- The geometric line
- The ideal and fastest racing line
- Racing lines for hairpins, medium speed and fast corners

Before I start this (at 0.03 into the video) I'm going to drain a 20l tank at Mid-Ohio driving a Tatuus F4 in Raceroom Racing Experience, report my best lap time, then watch all these, and do it again. Same set up, same conditions, same everything. I'm super curious to see what sort of impact a series like this will have on someone like myself, who's knowledge of vehicle dynamics is growing, but is a bit cluttered right now. A bringing together of facts in my heads sounds like it'd be a huge boon. Can Scott Mansell help whatever the hell this guy said his name was on KZfaq lower his lap times? Find out more over the course of probably a week? Maybe more. I work a lot, and I wish I had more time to dedicate to racing, but dang, life, man! Anyway, time to hotlap. Edit 1: Breadward Toastwinckel? Really? Edit 2: We have a basline. 1.28.194. My best still holds at 1.27.346. Let's see what we can do about those times. Edit 3: After watching five videos, I have banged in a 1.27.219. There's how many more to go? And with what I know so far, I know there's more time out there, just gotta put the pieces together.

if your baseline was 1.28 and your best ever time is 1.27, im not really so sure you would benefit from these videos as you clearly already have a good idea of driving lines etc with such consistent times... at this point, its surely mostly just practice. getting behind the wheel and spending some time in that drivers seat.

Kinda wished you compared racing lines in relation to the difference between the two sections before and after the corner. Your examples point that if there's a straight after the corner how different your line would be, which is correct. But we have 3 types of apexes, there's the perfect apex, then late apex, and then early apex. And I'm sure you know that early apex is for when you're coming out of a long straight and then going into a sector that is slower, so you don't brake as much, and you carry that speed with you through the corner. Where as in an early apex, like you said, we want to get on the throttle sooner and exit faster. I'm just saying, when you talk apex, be sure to mention the 3 types, it sits better in the mind of the student. Great series, by the way.

Seems to me that this video deserves a clarification. Around 3:00 you start talking about the ideal racing line, which supposedly involves straightening the car earlier and apexing later than in the case of the geometric line. Does that mean that you should transition from decelerating to accelerating (in other words - reach your minimum speed for that corner) before you meet the inside edge of the track? Because that's not what many years of watching the best drivers in the world have taught me.

This is the thing that ALWAYS gets me in sims, I know full well the concept but without fail, I go to a new track; or even a track I know but haven't driven in a long enough time, and ill probably do about 50-150 laps before I realise I've been taking the geometric line and not the ideal racing line for at least one corner and absolutely haemorrhaging time as a result of it...
@MrSaemichlaus
@MrSaemichlaus 4 жыл бұрын
The ideal line with the "slow in, fast out" line is also safer for me riding my motorbike on public roads. You brake to your slowest speed at corner entry, making you hit the turn-in point more reliably and reducing the risk of early turn-in and overshooting the exit / going offroad on the outside. Also, accelerating out of the corner with good vision of the exit and a little remaining lean increases the fun factor. For blind corners, keeping outside and turning in late also helps seeing further ahead through the corner. Lastly, riding a "faster line" doesn't necessarily mean you have more ground speed, instead you keep the speeds lower and the bike more stable (also a good idea for riding with passengers), because the ideal line makes up your time.

So power pulls the ideal line away from the geometric line, but does downforce pull the ideal line back towards the geometric line? Faster entry speed means more downforce and grip through the whole corner, so exit speed is improved by carrying momentum, right?

Depends on the corner and what comes after the corner, but as a rule karts have their own racing lines (called the wet or karting line) because they're massively underpowered, there is less focus on hitting the apex and getting a good corner exit, the focus is more on keeping speed and momentum throughout a corner. As a result for a go kart generally you'll want an earlier apex and a wider line. Look up the wet driving tutorials from this channel he explains the karting line

obviously the possibility of drifting drastically changes the design of the line. i'm thinking the much higher speed of attack makes drifting a no no for the F1 cars in relation to the corner attack strategy, it is true that Ruben Barichello had a style that included hugging the corner more than the average f1 driver at lower speeds( of course) but making it up after the post apex with acceleration with the intention of shorting the time the car sits in the corner? I was like many others a die hard senna fan, devastated at his death, and kept following barichello in races for some years after him being also a brazilian driver. thanks for the explanation

This is probably a silly question: Alright so the racing line apex is later in the corner than the geometric apex. As I understand it, this is to ensure a straighter exit resulting in more speed. Indeed, the 'harder' the turn the further the racing apex from the geo apex. Out of curiosity, are there any instances where the racing line apex is before the geometric apex?

Green line when you have lots of corners, orange line when you have a straight. Easy :)

hmm on both those ideal racing line examples you've moved the apex to a point further away than the real apex which is never going to faster. In the green line you will be so far ahead of the red line that it doesnt matter if the red line has better exit speed. 1 second after the corner starts the green line will be going faster than the red line because its already further down the straight
