Today we'll be watching a show you probably never heard of. It's a show called "Black. White." and its the the racist reality show ever. I sifted through six hours of this horrendous show to find some of the best, and by best I mean worst, parts for you. So sit back and enjoy some good ol' problematic cringe.

"Black. White. is a reality television show on FX. It follows two families of three, one white, and the other black. Through studio-quality make-up, the two families traded races and experienced what life is like in the other family's shoes.
The show was produced and created by Ice Cube and R. J. Cutler."

Having seen the show myself I have to say I can explain why Renee has a problem with Carmen. It’s not that she called her a bitch. It’s that she dropped it out of nowhere and then never apologizes. The closest Carmen comes to apologizing for any of her behavior on the show is with a “I’m sorry that you were offended.” THATS where the tension is coming from.
@katelynrushe9025
@katelynrushe9025 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve never seen the show, but I feel like another source of tension from that incident could be the implication that Carmen thinks black people call each other insulting things like “bitch” all the time and that it’s therefore okay to call Renee that.

I remember back when this was being promoted, Ice Cube was on a talk show and explained the intent was to make a modern version of “Black Like Me”. The book had seen a small resurgence in popularity thanks to references in several shows like Boy Meets World, so the pitch kind of made sense in the context of that time. (Not intended as a defense of the show) There was also an active push for black representation on modern networks, and pushback to tokenism and black characters that were stereotypes. Couple that with a lack of cultural awareness among whites of blackface, and that is where this tone deaf show (designed to make white liberals feel good) came from. Morgan Spurlock’s 30 Days has a veeeeeery similar vibe with it’s own set of problems. Worth looking into as a content mine.

not the same. ignorance is the basis of racism but it isn't racism of itself. she was ignorant of how to act and how to be but she wasn't racist. Not knowing isn't the same as racist. not knowing and hating a person because you don't understand and base thst on race, THAT is racism. now ignorance CAN help, indirectly, perpetuate racism. but thst isn't what they mean to do. what's happening is the real racists are using the other person's ignorance and taking their logic, trying to make themselves look not racist. We, as humans, need to understand thst we are capable of complex thought. we can and should distinguish the difference between an ignorant person and a racist person. YOU can cause an ignorant person to feel stupid, wrong and bad and make them side with an actual racist person because thsts how they see YOU. So YOU can create a racist just because you refused to distinguish the difference between ignorance and racist. So you treated an ignorant person like a racist and YOU showed them hate. So now thsts how they see you and expect others like you to act. so now, thabks to you, they now hate...which would be racist

I forgot how amazing that show was. The differences in growth between all the cast and the complete lack of growth from Bruno “The white dad”. He may be a “actor” but I do think he is the actual step father. Everyone in California is a actor. Rose has the most growth. Staring with scared to hug black Omar or Bruno to having a crush on dude from her class and realizing that racism is not all people see everyone as human beings. Amazing

This video unlocked a memory I tried to videotape over omg. In my last year of high school, 2016, I was in the band for my school’s bi-annual musical. This year was Hairspray, y’know, the once that has a major plot line about racial tension in 1960s Baltimore. But this was at a majority white upper middle class college in New Zealand-we don’t really even have African-Americans, there was definitely no black students in my year. So their solution? The darkest foundation Kmart sold set with cans of hairspray (no pun intended, that was the method). I had a friend (at the time, terrible person actually) on the cast who seriously thought she was one of those “MUA SFX” people, and she had out reference pictures of random black people in stock photos, using BLACK EYESHADOW to make “realistic” creases and things on the rest of the “black” cast. God it’s actually taking me a while to write this because I’m cringing so hard. I should be clear that I don’t blame the kids, they were just doing what they were directed to do by the white directors (although MUA friend had just turned 18, yikes). If that wasn’t bad enough, we have our own serious racial issues, mostly between the majority pakeha (white ppl) and indigenous people of NZ (Aotearoa), the Māori. There were Māori students on the cast, crew, and in the band. Obviously I cannot speak for them, but surely they and/or their parents were aware of the sensitivity of race and the callousness of the white teachers who led the production. The fact that the school administration, the city’s biggest theatre, the paying audience, and the newspapers that raved about the performance for weeks afterwards didn’t mention a single thing about the group of white teenagers in blackface in 2016 honestly appalls me. It was definitely noticed, but everyone overlooked it. Of all the musicals, they just *had* to perform Hairspray, and use blackface to do it. So blessed I’m too introverted to act and hid under the stage behind my drums the whole run.

There's a contract now that prevents productions of hairspray without casts that correspond to their "as written" description. So if the character is black, the actor is black and I believe that goes for everything including sexualities. The only character as far as I can remember being not overly difficult to cast is the mother who is a man in drag which is something that the actor is going to WANT to do.

Yeah, let's be real here.... Australians and New Zealanders are HELLA racist. Just so you know.... "black people" and "African Americans" are two different things. Black people are dark-skinned people that are of an African lineage, including Jamaicans, Haitians and Olmec Indians in South America. African Americans are Americans that immigrated from Africa, such as Elon Musk... he is a white African American. But majority of the black people in the US are not African Americans because they were born and raised in the US. They are just black Americans.

I just discovered your channel (more House Hunters content PLEASE) and I squealed when I saw this. I watched this back in 2006 and it was soooo cringe. Bruno was THE WORST. You didn't mention it, but the part where he and Renee go to the focus group and all of these black people are talking about their REAL experiences of being called the n-word. Bruno, in BLACKFACE and still determined to prove that racism is only in the minds of black people, actually tells a fake story about how someone once called him the n-word and he just laughed it off because he didn't want to give the person the power. It was bananas. It also came out that Bruno had a bunch of anti-black posts around the internet including a "rap" video basically about how black people are thugs and criminals and their own worst enemy. Ice Cube should be ashamed.

Well, holy shit. I could've gone my whole life without knowing this existed. Thanks, Chris! I hate it! Having worked in the production of several reality shows (i was just a grip), I can tell you that no, most of what you see isn't written. That's the whole point of reality shows; you don't need to hire guild actors, guild writers, or guild directors. Saves you a boatload of money. What is true is that producers absolutely manipulate situations. They goad, they ask ridiculous questions, and sometimes they send an intern out to go catch a raccoon and throw it in the house. The editors do the real magic, though. They can take a shot from four days ago, reverse it, zoom it in, and suddenly you have people reacting to each other in magical, impossible ways! Fact of the matter is; stick some crappy people in a crappy room, film what happens. Edit it. Television magic!

I do not know how you can argue that racism no longer exists when the Civil Rights Act was in 1964-not even one hundred years ago. Voting Rights was 1965. Fair Housing was 1968. It’s not like people just stopped being racist when these were passed. It’s not like the generation of children that grew up during that time didn’t just erase the blackface and black stereotypes they saw on TV and memories of their parents participating in the murder of black people and accepted that every one is the same no matter their skin color.

Me and my partner were sitting here talking about it and we realized that you might’ve overlooked that because I’m sure the subtitles didn’t show it, but watch Renees mouth when she says the word and watch Carmen’s mouth and listen to the number of beeps that actually happened. I think she meant more out spoken. In my experience (im native not black or white) for black women especially its more socially excepted for them to just speak their minds in the most loud, blunt, flamboyant way while a white woman doing it instantly makes them insufferably obnoxious if they do it in the same way

I think your perspective is pretty different from that of a Black person. I was surprised there was no mention of Bruno dropping the "N" word many times, even after being told that it was inappropriate. Bruno and Carmen were highly offensive. 14:13 14:13

Encore! This is so awful. Even if Bruno is an actor, he is true to the breed, and there are many more egregious examples. My ex-husband used to start a sentence with, "I'm not a racist, but..." I could get whiplash from trying to stifle the eye roll. Six entire hours is nothing short of heroic, so thanks a heap. lol

One night the show was filming at my local bar/restaurant in La Cresenta, CA. It was so obvious that the “new bartender” was in full make-up and over acting. The production crew told everyone it was a “reality” show. I’m so happy I didn’t sign the consent form to be shown in the episode. I had forgotten about the amount of cringe this was!

Omg Chris, I never heard of this show yet I am glad u did a video about it. I'm almost interested but just from the snippets you shared I can see myself being angry as hell the whole time. The racially insensitive behavior of those kids when they found out Nick was really black infuriated me! With that being said, I get that experiments like these are done in order to bridge gaps and open the hearts and minds of the racially "sleep" but I wanted to fight!!😡🤭🤭Anyway, so far I'm diggin' ur vids man. Stumbled upon you and have watched a couple of your videos. You really crack me up with your sarcastic sense of humor. I love it!! You may have found yourself a new subscriber!😏😜

At 4:40 the bleeped-out word sounds like it has two syllables and does not sound like B****. It Sounds out Like the N-word The second time the white woman is obviously saying "Yo B****". At 4:47 when Renee's words are bleeped out watch her lips, again it seems a lot like two syllables. My limited ability to read lips tells me she's saying N****R. My initial thought was also that the white woman had dropped a heavy racial slur based just on how everyone there reacted. It would also explain why Renee refused to let it go. The showrunners obviously liked the intensity of the drama it caused but, didn't want viewers to know they were playing with words they shouldn't be encouraging people to use.

The blackface almost kind of sort of looks acceptable. Like I wouldn't just instantly assume they were white before they started talking. I would probably assume the dad was a really dark Indian or something but at a glance it isn't the worst makeup I have ever seen. The whiteface on the other hand made those people look like ghouls.

What’s with the weird “narrative” shit I keep hearing about lately. It’s like anytime somebody acknowledges racism exists it’s “agenda” this and “narrative” that. When did people get so soft? Just say what you mean and mean what you say.

I’m thinking maybe the reason Renee found it so offensive is that whoever wrote the prompts assumed that all black people always speak with casual swear-words thrown in? I guess it depends if the “white speak” prompt sheet had any expletives too, but yeah perhaps Renee isn’t someone who uses many expletives so for them to imply that she should do often because of her race is big yikes
