I had colleague in USAF who was a B-52 pilot. He liked to tell story of when they were at Red Flag flying BUFF at about 150 feet over desert a Buccaneer flew under them from about the 7-o’clock to 1-o’clock position.

I was stationed at Nellis from '76-79 and got to see them fly, crazy pilots! Very fun to watch them come in low level and have a Vulcan fly with them at low altitude was impressive

I was at Nellis for the first 31Sqn Green Flag Ex after we formed at Bruggen with Tornados. I was in the Ops when over the radio came "Jesus the Brits just flew under us in battle formation" It turned out one of the US squadrons was flying their mission at low leval. When I asked how low they were I was told they were down to 2000 ft! When I was asked how low our boys were I told them 100ft hands off if they were chicken or 50ft if they had a couple of sorties under their belt. The TFR control unit used to have a setting to dial down to 100ft but some nosey aircrew had discovered another notch that wasn't labelled for 50ft. Rumour was BAE had designed the system for 50ft but the Air Force has asked for 100 and didn't want to pay any extra. As it had already been designed BAE just missed off labeling the CU.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York if I'm not mistaken. Really well worth a visit. Very enlightening interview and thanks for all the work involved in bringing this to us. I remember watching open mouthed the famous Red Flag clip of film of the Buccaneers hopping over terrain as the American Air Base defence teams failed to get a lock. Slightly panicked voices from memory!

My bother was a navigator flying in that particular exercise. Same year his Sqn lost a crew when a wing sadly broke off the plane in front of his. Amazing crews & planes back then - the best.

The British pilot was incorrect about the air to air kill ratio in Vietnam. It was about 2 to 1 in favor of the USAF, which was not acceptable either.

I feel so sorry for the aircrew who were on the last wave and only got to the bar by 7 in the evening. As ground crew we regularly worked very late to get aircraft serviceable for the next day on Red Flag. However, Vegas is a 24 hour town, so we all had a good time on those detachments 😀

The timings over target always amaze me, plus or minus 5 seconds, that must be alot of pressure on the pilot and nav ensuring TOT is spot on with potential enemy engagements en-route to the target or any malfunctions that may happen,,,, you never really think of those things to the untrained or the unfamiliarized,,, crazy stuff, but amazing still.

Here's an interesting and entertaining IMAX film about Red Flag which dovetails nicely into what we've been watching here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9KBrc2Y0srRgI0.html If you can get your hands on a DVD/BluRay copy of this film, do so because the IMAX quality of the production is amazing.

WTF are they saying? The shorter guy said; "Red Flag was the best flying you could get in the RAF. Well, it is succeeded now after the events in ME". Did he just say that the best thing you can experience is freaking WAR?
@peterjohnson350
@peterjohnson350 2 ай бұрын
I think he meant that ME was real warfare whereas red flag was as close as you could get without going to war.

....it would be nice to get an interview of ex-USAF aggressor pilots and listen to them talk about all the times they waxed the RAF guests like shooting cows with a high-powered scope. Interestingly to note that the claimed "performance" of the Tornado against the simulated SAM threats in the Nellis Range DID NOT translate to the substandard performance of the RAF Tornadoes in Desert Storm.
@michaelnapier4807
@michaelnapier4807 5 жыл бұрын
It would indeed be interesting - the Aggressor pilots were exemplary in their professionalism and their adherence to Soviet ROE, so I very much doubt that they would claim to have "waxed the RAF guests like shooting cows with a high-powered scope." And of course Red Flag was a training exercise and not a competition. Interestingly, the performance of the Tornado in the early Gulf War missions very closely matched that on the Nellis ranges - another example of just how good the exercise was - with only one low-level loss due to a Roland missile of which the crew were unaware (and of course were unable to terrain mask at night); one aircraft flew into the ground as a result of a systems failure and one was shot down from a mis-flown loft attack - and they would have been "shot down" on Red Flag too! But it is not really appropriate to compare night TF tactics with day OLF - a bit like comparing apples with pears... I think that the bottom line was that Red Flag was a fantastic training exercise from which crews from across the USAF, USN, USMC, RAF and various other allied air forces learnt how to work together and how to maximize their chances of surviving the first missions and being effective in combat - as indeed the Tornado Force was during the Gulf War.

Pancho Nuts I’ve heard many USAF pilots speak including aggressors........and they have nothing but admiration for RAF crew, aircraft and tactics.

The Buccaneer was the first aircraft to' shoot down' an F15 at Red Flag through use of a retard bomb but it had to climb about 1000 feet to do so as the F15 could not get anywhere near low enough for the Bananabomber to sucker him in. There are videos of the Buccs flying too low for even the video recordings to capture a clear pic but the US voiceover can be incredulous.
@paulm2467
@paulm2467 5 ай бұрын
Yeah it would be interesting, I’ve never heard a US pilot talking about it, maybe it never happened or maybe the pilots respect each other or maybe they were new pilots learning from experienced pilots in a war game and were too busy to get involved in your bs.
