That's a really neat design. Imagine it was none too quiet living there, rural or not, but the area certainly has a nice view.
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 Жыл бұрын
I'd take that over city (or worse, highway) noise. Not a constant noise like those sources, instead a (potentially fairly loud) train every once in a while, the rest of the time peace and quiet. I don't know how frequent trains are on that line, but being rural probably not obnoxiously often. And it probably isn't near any level crossings, and to my understanding trains in England don't blow their horns approaching level crossings like they do in the US (except those with "quiet crossing" upgrades).
@richmcgee434
@richmcgee434 Жыл бұрын
@@quillmaurer6563 I've spent more than half my life in a rural location less than a quarter mile from a not particularly active freight line. I will take city noise over that any time, because US trains do blow their horns, and not just at crossings. We're rural enough to have deer-on-tracks issues, and the freights run through about four or five times per night and only two or three times in the day. You get to where you can usually sleep through it, but only "usually" - and a quarter of a mile is not the same as being in a house built over the train tracks at all. Railroads are way more pleasant to watch from a distance than they are to live by day in, day out.

I was disappointed with the lack of spooktober spirit this year. But I would like to thank you for being one of the highlights of my spooktober. All the halloween stories you told this month were fantastic. Now give yourself a good break, you deserve one with all the good content you pumped out recently

Very unusual for a tunnel to be in a shape of a castle, well done for Charles Dickens to a novel out of this ghost story.

I just looked the Clayton Tunnel crash up on Wikipedia because I wanted to know exactly what signalling error caused this. Wikipedia states an automatic signal failed to return to danger! Automatic signal in 1861??? I don't think so... more likely, the wire had snapped. Accidents with snapped wires that kept signals showing "off" eventually led to the failsafe method, ie in case of the wire snapping the signal would return to danger. This method is still used today - in case of any fault, the signal returns to danger. That's an interesting story and what a unique building this is, this tunnel that's also a castle and a house. No wonder the ghosts like it there and that this inspired Charles Dickens' "The Signalman". "The Signalman" is by the way an incredibly accurate description of the life of early signalmen (now called signallers). There were far less safety devices than there were during later Victorian times (all were the results of tragedies), and without even a telephone connection to the adjoining signal boxes it would have been extremely lonely indeed. Early signalmen had by the way far more bell signals than later on due to the lack of a phone connection. This has been a very interesting month with all the ghost stories of the railways - thank you very much! We railway folks know how haunted it is on the rails, most of us can tell a few stories. The railways are over 200 years old now (in England anyway) so this is hardly surprising...
@ajaxengineco
@ajaxengineco Жыл бұрын
Let me talk about the 'automatic signal' - it was a patented invention, and worked by a treadle placed inside the rail. The passing of a train pressed the treadle and a length of wire pulled the distant signal to danger. When it wanted to. If it didn't respond, as so often happened, a bell would instead ring and the signalman could work the signal with a hand-wheel. In this instance, three trains passed the Clayton Tunnel box in quick succession - the first went psst smoothly, but the signal failed to respond - by the before the signalman got to address that the second train was bearing down upon him. He got out his red flag and waved it just as the engine dove into the tunnel. It came to rest more than half a mile inside and began to set back. The third train approaches, and the signalman, as a result of a miscommunication with the north box, thought the tunnel was clear and did nothing to stop it. Thus followed the inevitable collision.

@@ajaxengineco Oh I see, wow, I didn't know that, thank you! When I heard automatic signal I pictured of course modern color light signals operated by track circuits and they of course were not around at the time. Seems it wasn't such a good invention though since it often didn't work, maybe that's why it didn't catch on. I think there would have been only this one signal at the time, since it was time interval signalling. And with this being "off" - disaster followed. What about this hand wheel, you mean something similar to what was used for level crossing barriers? Wow that's interesting! I wasn't aware there was a time this was used to operate signals, I thought after the first signals - actual boards that were literally put "on" and taken "off" - the next step was levers. But the oldest signalbox with levers I've heard of was from 1875, at Victoria station if I remember right. That wasn't a proper signalbox as we would understand it though, more like a hole in the wall. The box I worked for many years was from 1877 but that was already a proper signalbox (LNWR) - levers and interlocking, though the interlocking might have been from a later date. Fascinating! It's a shame that all the old signalboxes have been done away with, isn't it? I miss my old box. Now signalling is a glorified office job. The young kids starting now as signallers have no idea what actually goes on on the ground. It's a tragedy.

My mum used to run an Gym in Manchester before moving to Cornwall. the Gym had once been an Industrial building my Grandmother told me about her own ghost story which happened while she was cleaning up one day after they had closed for the day. I understand she had seen the ghost of the night watchmen who had killed himself. she had found this out because someone who had worked there had told her about the accident
