It's been just over a week since I first set up the rainbowfish river aquarium. We have had a solid start but there are a few key things to do in the first week. I'll take you through them so you know what to do in your own aquarium. I class these as essential, purely because they help your aquarium balance a lot faster which means you will enjoy it more and ultimately get better results.

PS: I would love a video of your explaining water testings in low tech setups, fish balance, and monthly maintenance routine.

Great video as always. The tank is looking brilliant. The white substance that grows on the spiderwood is a harmless type of fungus. It's growth seems to be triggered as the wood gets waterlogged and the beneficial bacteria starts to do its thing. It shocked the heck out of me the first time it happened in one of my aquariums. I looked on KZfaq for an answer and was surprised to find virtually no videos about it. So I researched that fungus and made my own video to help others. Essentially that fungus is a bit like mushrooms growing on a log in the woods...except underwater...in an aquarium. If left alone it will eventually turn from being wispy & white to being sort of chunky & brown before it dissolves away. You can squirt it with hydrogen peroxide or dose it with a product like Seachem Excel to get rid of it, or do like you did and manually remove it, or wait for it to dissolve away. Siamese Algae Eaters, Bristlenose Plecos, various snails and other algae-consuming creatures seem to be fond of it (especially after it has turned brown). The fungus can grow on other forms of aquarium wood as well, but it most commonly turns up on spiderwood. Love your channel, by the way. You are quite inspirational. Blessings to you!

I can't believe it took me so long to find this channel!! A huge part of the appeal of aquascaping is its beauty but that can often make it so daunting as everyone's videos are so polished that they skip over all those little details we really need. It's so great to see your sense of humour and knowledge, and so relieving to have this sort of advice.

The white things is: Fungus. It always come up on redmoor wood. You can keep it or it will disappear over the time. Amano shrimp love it too. If you don’t want to see it from the beginning, just sunk your wood in a bucket full of the water from on of your tank (it will trigger the fungus faster) and after a week clean the wood.

@balthazarekarius
@balthazarekarius 2 жыл бұрын
@@nathanielwise508 I don't think so. If you mean the "sewage fungus" it's also bacteria. Sphaerotilus natans it looks stringy and is an indicator for polluted water. The stuff on new wood is always many kinds bacteria eating sugar left in the wood. There are very few fungus that can live underwater and im sure you don't find them in aquariums. And if you have a fungus in the aquarium it's more likely a kind of fishdisease.

Oh, my understanding is that that white stuff on the wood is sap seeping out, it needs to be eaten by fish/physically removed a few times before it comes good. Although I like to soak new wood in a plain tank with a pump/super high flow rate and higher temperatures, tends to stop the film from happening in the first place. That's just me though :) fishtank looks great!

great tank, almost a perfect set up. but rainbows don't like to much light. also to bring out the colours, beef heart, freeze it, when it's frozen and hard, shave it on a grater, medium to course, and can pop it back in the freezer till the next time, freezing kills all the badness disease, bacteria, makes it safe, and a little goes a long way. one to two weeks, watch their colours pop.

Morning! :) I'm nearly at the finishing stage at getting rid of my BBA and just stabilizing my filter after an upgrade. I've got a few plants already but looking for something a bit more fuller, what do you recommend? I've got a corner tank so it's quite tall as well :):

Hi Jamie, look at echinodorus species or hygrophila siamensis, amazon swords could work too

Hey MD I was thinking about your discus tank from the previous video. Perhaps your substrate is too deep creating lots of bad bacteria which end up onto food making discus unwell. Another thought is maybe having a nightlight so the lights don’t ramp up straight away freaking the discus out?

A deep substrate seems to be better. I've tested both shallow and deep substrates for my discus and they seem to be healthier with the deep one. Just need to have something that likes to dig to help turn the top layers regularly.

You are saying dechlorinated water but you fill up a fish tank with a water from the sink. Do you have a filter there installed or something? Or you put something that gets rid of chlorine into the fish tank after you fill it in with water. I kind of missed that in the video.

instead of cories why not some stiphodon sp. gobies? they would go better with the rainbowfish and also effectively keep the exposed wood clean

Idk why but my albino cory is like almost twice as large as my full grown pandas. I got it as a thicc boi at Petco when they had a shipment of the biggest ones I've ever seen.

Have you ever had a fish tank implode?? I just bought a 55 gallon and I’m worried about it breaking under all that water pressure.
