About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

I live in Alaska and have used the plastic "deer fence" like you have to screen my trees and shrubs against the moose. Bought 2 - 100ft. rolls 16 years ago and it is still just like new, even though I take it down every spring, roll it up and re-install in the late autumn. I use rebar or conduit pipe and plastic wire ties to elevate the netting a few feet above the ground.

Hi, Doug and Stacy, from Canada, thanks for sharing this (timely) info! Re the plastic netting, I thought it would help to staple some 2 x 2 inch boards or other narrow sticks along the sides or even just at each end to weigh the netting down. It would still be easy to roll up and store. Or you could make folds like the ones on curtains, sewn with string whatever width you want and insert sticks, 2 by 4’s, etc., temporarily. Netting is a bit wiggly so this would help it to stay put. Happy gardening! God bless you and give you favour in all your ways.

This video is very inspiring because you have winters and every year you have to start over and over again. I started my urban garden and I will not stop until I have my little farm.

Excellent! I built hinged cages over all of my four beds and opted out of using wire for this netting. Chicken wire is painful and it would’ve taken me weeks to do! I’m so glad I had found this netting. It’s quite strong and flexible too. I’m only worried about the squirrels nibbling at it. I’m sure their teeth could chop through it. We will see! Thanks for the memories. The hanging of the plants and saving the seeds was how my Mother and Grandmother on my Mother's side taught me how to save seeds. The plant, after pulled, puts the remaining energy stored in the plant into the seeds and they seem to be much better seeds the next year. I seem to remember Grandmother hung them inside a brown paper bag somehow. How and why, I don't remember?????
@RainbowSunshineRain
@RainbowSunshineRain 4 жыл бұрын
Jerry O'Dell I was actually reluctant to this method because once the plants are dried, they break very easily and the seeds fall off. So your Grandmother was probably wrapping them in paper to save the fallen seeds and leaves. This was makes more sense to me :-)

I save my dill seeds, and my coriander (from the cilantro plant) this way- place the plant in a paper bag that has a few holes in it near the folded top (for aeration). Hang that bag in a cool dry place until the seeds are dried & fall off naturally . Ready to plant or use in cooking!
@christinedehn3257

Paper bags used to be a given in any household. Now not so much .Plants hung to dry can be slipped into a bucket which is also hanging from the same nail. Not tight, leave lots of air space. The pail collects any seeds or debris that drop. Some people also pull up tomato and pepper plants when frost is predicted and hang them in a protected area to let the fruit ripen. It can extent your fresh tomato season by a couple of weeks.

It sounds like you need to trap a few cats too me there are state county and city leash laws if you happen to live in a city with out any leash law's then find out why not and next city counsel have them put it on the next month agenda and be ready with photos and list of illness that they spread work with your vet to help you out with this and the damage they have done to your property and your food budget and what you had to buy due to the amount of damage they cause to your family health. This is just some of the things you can present to your city counsel or county board. When we took in the cost of the food and health issues and it cost along with the cost of the seed to replant and the cost of labor it adds up with all this in hand and time's it by 15 or 20 people the cost go"s up in a hurry. We have to deal with rockchuck's raccoon Fox skunks along with the bird"s hope this helps you out with your troubles.

Thank you for the idea. My wife and I just started building raised beds with the hinged hoop tops. That netting will work perfectly when it's time to remove the plastic. Keep up the good work. We really enjoy watching you guys.

Stacy!!! I literally just went out this morning, in the rain and grabbed all the chicken wire I could find and covered my potato beds because our dog keeps digging them up and it was such a pain to deal with unrolling it etc.. (even with my 10 yr olds help) haha! Definitely going to invest in this new method. Thanks for the tip!

I was wondering if you ever tried germinating your seeds on a moist paper towel fold in half to cover seed then put in ziplock bag put that bag in a brown paper bag and in about 7 days you have sprouts that you can plant in potting soil. There videos out there that show how to do it. I learned this from a gentleman who was taught from his father from Lithuania.

5:56 I used that black plastic mesh for a period of time. I stopped using it because of the high frequency of entanglement of robins and sparrows.

There are different weights of netting. I tried Ross brand garden netting on a cherry tree and immediately had birds tangled in it. Never again! But I have used the same heavier weight netting as in the video, Easy Gardener brand deer barrier fencing, over my raised beds for about 10 years and have never had birds get tangled.

Thanks Stacy for the tip on the netting. I have just a couple small beds in our backyard in town. Always finding something has been digging in it... I think squirrels. Also, I’ve been saving flower seeds for several years. I replant marigolds, calendula, and zinnias. I save the seeds in marked envelopes and always have more than enough. My flowers attract a lot of butterflies and some hummingbirds.

I love my raised garden beds. And netting is great stuff. We have comfrey growing wild everywhere here. I use the leaf part in my seaweed, fish bone, drum. Let it all rot down in water & feed my plants with it.

I moved out into (further) the country about 5 years ago and trying to build this one acre into as much a homestead as possible (partially disabled). Been saving some seeds and learning to save others s well. I can say that I only bought green and lima beans once. It’s a great money saver. 🦅🇺🇸

Hi Stacey, Another netting you can use is tole. (Used to make bottom of dress stick out). Can be ordered online in bolts. Small animals dont like it cause their nails get stuck in it. And pieces can be cut and used to tie tomatoes plants etc without damaging plants. Just FYI Thanks for the tips!!😊

I was curious about that also. We tried using it on a fig tree to keep the squirrels and birds away, but they just ate through it and took most of the figs. I was hoping that maybe they used a different, more sturdy brand, maybe.

Seed saving has been almost automatic for me since my first garden. I raised my kids in the gardens, giving them their own rows, then squares, then quarters, and now they still garden in my garden , even the ones that no longer live in the home. This reminds me to ask them if they are planting to save seeds, too.

I love that you pull up the whole plant. That's sooo much easier and faster. I usually pick the flowers off the plants, bring them inside making sure they are dry and then store them. Also can't wait to try some of that netting. I hate getting pocked by the chicken wires. Great ideas as always. Thanks.
