I met Grant MacDonald once at the end of a "Ram Ranch Challenge" where we had to listen to all ram ranches back to back without falling asleep. Weird guy, weirder songs, still worth the steam gift card.

I swear this is absolutely true and factual: My Wife and I recently decided to each write our last will and testament. We did not share them with each other nor have we discussed the contents there of...we are only 35 and 40 but I travel almost constantly for work and my wife too has a risky job. I stated in an official legally binding, notorized document that should I pass away, that it would mean the world to me, on top of affording me an immense amount of peace and contentment, that upon the conclusion of my funeral that my kids or Wife MUST play the song Ram Ranch...I even included a flash drive as well as an original copy of the CD containing the song. If I know my family and friends as well as I believe I do, about half of them will be crying and struggling to breathe from laughing their asses off... while the other half will be either appalled, terribly confused or just plain angry... This will be my final gift to my loved ones...and they'll never see it coming 😅

Fun fact about the anti vaccine protests here in canada: They were completely peaceful. All the damage was from homeless people (a serious problem here in canada) and angry counter protesters who were clearly anti protesters. The people there to protest the vaccine mandate were throwing a festival basically. Sharing food, dancing, playing music, and sharing stories. They left the places they went to cleaner and more put together than when they got there. And the most dangerous thing there before the police came and started beating people was a tiny little firecracker (like, tiny tiny, big ones are restricted here) went off at my mom's feet when she went. And she even got an apology and everything. This is important to note since in the college i was attending at the time it was "common knowledge" that they were riots similar to the blm riots. (This probably stems from both of them being called "completely peaceful protests.")

The funny part about them trying to go after the truckers with the song is that it's partially why it died out. Ram Ranch was supposed to be a purely shitposting thing, but then Grant himself made an explicitly political song and cheered on gunning after the truckers. Which wasn't a black and white issue, and the protests had a ton of support. In fact, people got so pissed that they dug into Grant and found out he was molesting his nephew since the kid was less than 17. Basically, because Grant wanted to ride the Current Thing wave, he got outed as a sexual predator.

Ok, Whang, at some point, you've gotta cover Chuck Tingle. His books are so wild and out there, but Chuck himself is so wholesome and sweet, and there's a surprisingly deep meaning behind all his craziness.

A friend of mine tried to Rick Roll me with Ram Ranch a few years ago. But it backfired, because I unironically loved the song. It reminded me so much of the batshit crazy cassette demo's I'd receive when I was a DJ on my college radio station. There was one from an outfit calling themselves Eric Clamped On called "Gay Love" which was a parody of Layla. I remember the lyrics as: "Gay love You got me on my knees Gay love A little deeper please Gay love Darling won't you grease me from behind..."

Grant has a song called Júníus Jakob Friðfinnsson which is about a fellow Icelander whose ancestors to New Iceland in Manitoba north of Winnipeg in the late 1800s during and after a devastating volcanic eruption and years of almost no summer. It really took me off guard when I saw the song name. Pretty coincidental.

I first heard Grant's music when a Canadian radio show did an episode about outsider music and played one of his songs. This was way back in 2006 or so. They played a song of his called A Billion Bucks, which is about Getty Oil and how they did business with Nazi Germany. No cowboys, gay or otherwise, to be seen. Learning that he used to be an investment banker kind of explains that song. I vaguely remembered the song long after I heard it but I forgot the artist and the title. Imagine my shock when I finally dig through the show's archives last year to find the song again and I discovered it was the Ram Ranch guy!
