So with the guy who’s wife is a nurse who is suffering with epilepsy. Is there a reason he couldn’t find himself a higher paying job in two years, rather than applying for jobs on her behalf to keep her working? I get she still wants to work, but there was a way bigger conversation here and I think we got caught up in the hysteria. This man makes 30k a year. He should be focusing his energy on raising his income especially when her seizures has been stressed induced. You want to take some stress off of her, make more income. Debt should not be your focus until you do, especially with losing so much of the household income.

For grad school, what you want to do afterwards affects whether you need a name brand school. The big NY law firms, for example, are hiring out of top law schools only. It really depends what your goals are. And I absolutely DO check where my doctors went to med school before I choose them. I also think the Ramsey team forgets to mention for undergrad (not grad schools) that the top schools have need-based financial aid out of enormous endowments that often makes them less expensive than state schools for families earning below ~$200K, regardless of what the "sticker price" is. If you can get in, you should try, and see what the aid package is.

It constantly amazes me the number of callers who ask Dave or one of the personalities if they can afford for their spouse to stay at home, but when asked if they can afford to live solely on the other person's income have no clue. It's as if that concept never occurred to them. It's not rocket science (or surgery, as Dave would say), people! When it's suggested to try living on just the one income for a couple of months or so, they are reluctant to try it. The unsaid reply is, to me anyway, that they don't think it would be tenable.🤷🏼‍♀️

You definitely didn't "introduce" boarding up windows...this used to be done years ago but the current generation does it less (we are VERY seldom hit by anything, so people just don't keep this stuff on hand as much). Some even have boards custom-cut with bolts fitted and holes in the wall around the window so they can be bolted in. So no it's not the usual "American tourist saved the 3rd world" story 😊

I get so frustrated with Dave when 1099 people call in and he seems to not understand their situation and just dismisses them. The guy says he brings in $9,000 a month but his tax return shows $25,000 a year because of all of his write offs. My husband and I are the same, we have a $30,000 a year mileage write off because we drive a lot for work. We’re not actually spending $30,000 a year!! When we tried to buy a house years ago all the lenders we talked to didn’t want to deal with us because we were 1099 and told us we couldn’t have it all, ie write offs and get a loan. When I talked to a lender about not writing off as much to qualify he said that would be a red flag. Thankfully we already had a house and just decided to be content with it and paid it off 2 years ago.

@@johnparker4484 I do not save my responses, but anyone who is a regular on this show knows that I have weighed in numerous times about legal issues that were not considered in their advice on the show, most about family law, health law, or estate law. (My daughter is an attorney.) In general, because they market themselves as a financial advice company and those related issues, like employment and real estate, they should stick to those areas. Family, estate, and health law are tricky areas legally.

@@thomasnunya1438 An example from tonight's show. Dave just told a caller to print up some business cards, start working as a handyman, and make a ton of money. No one with legal sense would tell someone to do that without also mentioning being bonded and insured and taking legal steps to protect yourself. Doing work in people's homes means a million ways things can go wrong unexpectedly. This is a case where some basic legal advice on steps to take to protect yourself against potential lawsuits would be very beneficial and Dave should have known what those steps are and also included them in his advice to this young man.

Be creative. Find super cheap fun things. Go to the beach and bring a picnic, free music in the park and share a bottle of wine and some cheese and meat, explain that you have goals and that is why you need to do cheap dates so you can have a great life for your future family.

@@rachelkruse9087 Yes, my husband and I ate out way too much but we did a lot of diners back in the day, breakfast, etc. Many of my friends would brag about the expensive Italian dinners they would have, cloth napkin kind of places and I thought, "how is he paying for that?" Well later you hear about the debt. Just be smart and very honest.

I almost thought that was a scam call because anybody who makes $25,000 a year is well aware that he cannot get a mortgage. I was waiting for Dave to let him have it, lol. I would have hung up too!
