Oculus's hatred for aliens has always stuck out to me. He talks about xenos with an almost palpable bile. Even chaos and Heretics don't seem to anger him as much as the most minor of non-human races. I feel like there is either some untold story of a terrible alien encounter in his past, or that he might actually Harbor sympathy for xenos and is putting on a show of hatred to throw off the Inquisition.

The heretic and the mutant atleast to a historian their purging can serve as an example and warning to those that comes in the times after their fall, the same for the foulest servants of the ruinous powers. The Xenos lack even that reedeming quality slight and irrelevant as it may be in the eyes of the Imperium.

The heretic can be seen as fallen kin, puttied and leaned from. A heretic's fall can be used to instruct the faithful. The mutant is likewise pitiable, and many can even serve after a fashion, or seek to cleanse their souls through the purgation of their bodies. The alien, though, is no kin to humanity. Their lessons are only in their destruction, and their sole function for us is to refine our techniques in killing them.

In my own head canon the lack of records concerning the xenocides has to do with the involvement of the lost legions. One of the lost legions might have been wiped out in its entirety, while the other lost legions primarch could have been corrupted by Rangda somehow ( The lost and the purged primarch), with the surviving legionaries being absorbed into other legions such as the Ultramarines . It would be plausible for the Emperor to wipe out all records on the lost legions since the knowledge of the loss of two whole legions and two primarchs would be devastating for the morale of the emerging Imperium.
@zrrion6the6insect6

if the lost legions were indeed consumed then it would make sense that the xenos could "spoof" imperial ships as they possibly *were* imperial ships making even visual identification unreliable.

The Imperial Fists also received reinforcements, which suggests _at least_ a legion's worth distributed between the two. _The chamber at the end of memory_ reveals that whatever the lost were erased for threatened the heart of the Great crusade and was so horrible that Dorn and Guilliman had their memories sealed. Given that this was during preparations for the siege of Terra, we can safely rule out that it was for turning against the Imperium or dying. It's also known that they were erased for separate events. As an aside, the revelation that Malcador can manipulate the memories of Primarchs makes whatever he revealed to Dorn suspect. My money's on discovering some horrible secret about Big E (e.g. he's a agent of chaos after his trip through the Molech portal) or stumbling upon some faction that directly refuted his vision.
@TheHobgoblyn
@TheHobgoblyn 4 жыл бұрын
I think it may very well be a far more likely explanation for the fate of one of them, but not both. Everyone always wants to explain both away with a single event even though it has been repeatedly reiterated that they were separate tragedies, not a single connected event. Also-- one or the other seems to have been purged for excessive mutation given the fervor by which all of the other legions hid their mutations from the Emperor. I don't really see how that would tie into this. And of the two explanations you provided there, the being turned on the Empire and fighting for the enemy seems the one far more likely one that would have resulted in all records of them being purged. First of all, in either case, the entire legion would never be affected because there would always be some members of the legion back on their home world or on various patrols or errands around the galaxy. So if the majority of the legion died in battle protecting the empire, they would have been heralded as heroes and any remainder of the legion would be charged with carrying its colors and keeping the memory alive. The Emperor's Children was retained as a legion despite similarly having barely any members left and suffering the purge of 90% of the legion. However, if the primarch and most of the legion had been turned by the enemy and fought against the Emperor, then that is something the Emperor would definitely want erased from the records. Any remaining members of the Legion who they could be certain were not under the influence of the Ragdan likely would have been merely reassigned to a different legion. And if it was out-and-out mind control, it would be understandable why none of the other Primarchs held a grudge against their brother for having been turned on them.

What we do know is that both the Dark Angels lost nearly fifty thousand Space Marines in the conflict, and the Imperial Army had create a new combat documentaries after this war. This genocide was so vast that perhaps the two lost legions were destroyed in this conflict, and God Emperor knows how worlds were lost and Imperial Army units destroyed by it, one would hope that this event would be record for future analysis, but there almost nothing from this event.

Historitor Oculus, I have something that I believe warrants your qualified attention. In my studies on the foul xenos that predated blessed mankind I came across your own study on the Blackstone Fortresses and the interview of Inquisitor Horst by Techpriest Alagos of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Hearing your findings on the "Dragon of Mars" made me revisit this archived footage, and I believe it may have revealed potentially terrible answers: could this "dragon of mars", this thing stowed away in the Noctis Labyrinthus be none other than the "Void Dragon" the inquisitor spoke of? These are the only two prominent mentions of a "dragon" I could find that exist outside of base myth and superstition and whilst one cannot discount such things as coincidences and the reliability of the sources examined, there is a gnawing in my mind that tells me there is something more. Whilst I fear the ramifications of such a line of questioning, I find myself inspired by your own bravery in the pursuit of truth and the correlation striking enough to bring this to your attention. If there is any shred of veracity to my suspicions, then you must understand why I send this to you on vellum rather than a pre-recorded message attatched to a servo-skull. Praise be the the Emperor of Mankind and may he watch over you. Yours in faith, Acolyte Lysander

18:08, while the larger topic of the Rangdan and Oculus' reaction is notable, I can't help but compare his comments on the Noctis Labyrinth here to the one of the Ordo Sinister. When speaking of the Psi-Titans, Oculus is terrified and despairing in a way not seen since his Primarch-granted delving into tomes on the nature of Chaos. Of the Dragon of Mars, he is much more lightly frustrated and musing as he often is when exploring the less detailed side of the lore. And within the Necron analysis including the C'tan, the normal disgust and even fear returned. *But the Void Dragon is never mentioned*. Yes, it's likley being saved for its own video. Mag'ladroth is a being vital to not just the Mechicum or the Imperium, but humanity itself. The contradiction to a scholar of the 42nd Millennium, the highs and lows of what it means to owe everything to an alien god beaten and forced asleep by the god of humanity, is something I think we're all anxious to see. Whichever Tech-Priest passed that detail of the Noctis Labyrinth along certainly is. Also, I find the occasional reference by Oculus to classical literature, from Faust to greek epics, very heartwarming. That myths two and a half thousand years old in our day, meant to entertain and educate, survived into the 41st millennium in recognizable form makes me wonder if more 'present' records still persist. If he could potentially point to the ancient greco-roman and gothic cultural and architectural styles persisting since the days of the Great Crusade. If he could see the political origins of the Imperium's policies. But perhaps the latter is for the best it remains buried. If the Mechanicus cannot see the difference between the open science of the pre-Chaos galaxy vs the one they live in now, then asking an Imperial scholar to comment on modern politics is to ask for a foregone conclusion nobody will be happy with.

I love that 40k has 'incomplete' lore, but part of me would love to see a version of the rangdan... Some kind of army of corrupted elements of other races, tied to the will of a rangdan master. There are similarities with slaught, enslavers, the hrud, and Tyranids scattered throughout the lore of the rangdan, and the fact that attrition was so high and 2 whole legions and primarchs were probably lost to them makes me think they were a combination of the thing and invasion of the body snatchers. Mutative, corrupting, and controlling, able to turn biology and technology against their opponents and absorb them into the rangdan for future conquest. References to '-vores' conjure images of organic creatures able to feast on bones, brains, or even, and perhaps most tellingly, technology, and amalgamate that technology directly into their form. Maybe some escaped the xenocides...

Knowing how the Emperor unleashed and subsequently releashed the Dragon would be interesting to know. In the HH era the Dragon lacked a consciousness and was pure potential locked deep beneath the labyrinth. Releasing it in it's physical form would have required a Necrodermis, which is a secret only known to the Necrons. Maybe he didn't release the Dragon itself, but deviced some sort of weapon from it's energies or utilised it's knowledge.

I believe it took more than three Legions to take out the Rangdan. On Ullanor there was a discussion between Magnus and if I remember right Mortarion about the last time nine Legions gathered together in one place. Mortarion said that they weren't allowed to talk about it because the Emperor said they couldn't. Which to me would imply that one or both the lost Primarchs died fighting the Rangdan. Since they are basically the only things the Emperor told the Primarchs they can't talk about. He erased them from history and the Rangdan, coincidence?

Could part of the reason there are not many records on the Rangdan Xenocides is because in these campaigns the "lost" primarchs/legion partook in these and failed in such a way that led to them being "lost" and to discuss these campaigns one must discuss the the lost. The Emperor does not accept failure. See oculus record on the lost primarchs.

Great Video. The Rangda being a bacteria makes sense. Supposedly, the Rangdan Xenocide was where Russ may have been ordered to kill the Primarchs of the 2nd and 11th Legions. If they were infected and made Rangda, it makes sense why they were stricken from the records.

You make the best content. I'm surprised you didn't talk about your excellent Lost Primarchs theory of one being destroyed by the Rangdan again. The two videos together have me thinking did the Rangdan virally infect an entire lost legion and only the molecular and bio-destructive Necron technologies could purge them totally. I wonder what the Emperor had to bargain with Void Dragon to get a cure.

In my head Canon, the rangda had found one of the lost primarchs and used it's dna/biomass to create monstrosities. Thus why the emperor seemed so willing to bring out the super secret C'tan guns in the form of a transcendent void dragon shard, and it's ridiculously thorough redactions. I think he wanted to rescue the primarch at first but after seeing what they did to it he realized he has to utterly obliterate everything including the records. There really aren't any great crusade era incidents that had astartes losses like the xenocides.

It... doesn't. There's an odd reference to the II and XI in a Regimental Standard post about the Xenocides, but beyond that, that's kinda it. It's rumoured Space Marine Legions went to their destruction during it, and perhaps one of the reason GW won't elaborate on the Xenocides is that they're a reasonable way for and II and XI to vanish, without ever having to reveal their true fates.

Given the similarity in names and 40ks penchant for referencing other sci fi and fantasy stories I think the Rangdan are a reference to the Hrangan from George RR Martin's thousand world series. Like the Rangdan we never see them directly either but their presence as humanities long past enemy is still felt. Like the Rangdan they were said to have client races who acted as soldiers and slaves. Interestingly it was said that the Hrangans most potent ability was to turn their enemies against each other through psychic influence. This has some interesting implications for the 40k world if you think the similarities cross over.

Oculus, thank you for movie. Great, mysterious, intriguing presentation of the material! Bravo! This is a very interesting part of the story of WH30K / 40K. I studied all the available material on the topic and I would like to write about my findings. about Rangda. Note such features: 1) Technological superiority over imperium 2) Not a single mention in the sources of necrons or eldar 3) Paranoidal destruction of all information about these "Aliens" 4) Mention as the "only threat" to the "Imperium" .... Not to "Humanity" ;) 5) Explicit specialization of slaughts for working with humans 6) Information about of "alien wars" of DAoT's people in this sector of galaxy. Clearly successful. Otherwise there would be no people in it. about Lost primarchs: Neither the complete destruction of the legion in battle, nor the genetic decay are sufficient reasons for total oblivion. It just shows what a great enemy was defeated by the Emperor! The winner forgets only that which shows his weakness. Which threat can be repeated. I see only two possible reasons: 1 ) Primarchs voluntarily, being in “their mind and control”, accepted the ideas of the enemy and went over to his side. 2) Legions suffered huge losses in battle. The primarchs scared and led the troops out of their positions. But all this is possible only if, on the other side, not viruses and demons fight, but Humans, with sane morality and goals. Such ideas that are able to kill the Imperium and take its place. Then it makes sense in such a paranoid derogation of all available information. From which the conclusion suggests itself that Rangda was a surviving fragment of the people of the Dark era of technology. The composition of which were fused once defeated xenos. Maybe even under the control of artificial intelligence. Such a composition is an absolute nightmare for the Emperor and his "Creed". Here he can sell his soul to C'tan for the sake of victory.

This will make excellent educational material for my class of Ministorum acolytes on the importance of good record-keeping. Who knows what secrets their foul biology might have held that could have given us the edge over the Great Devourer? Perhaps it might not be such a stretch to conclude that the Devourer itself may have started as a similar life form. Alas. 'Tis not for me to decide, and perhaps humanity is the better for it.

And so the Occulus draws ever closer to a realisation that none outside the upper mechanicus and him upon the throne have ever known. That within a red star, within a black maze lies the last great C’tan, that which devoured the stars and doomed those ancient crafters of genes. The Void Dragon lies their, and soon the Occolus will realise it.
