Hmmm, yes and no. First, I agree with Ebon regarding the AI. I'm sure that many people won't need that and wouldn't like the extra price and probably extra power draw. If anyone is interested in low power draw, "Wolfgang's Channel" channel here on YT has deeper dives and tests. He shows the importance of the motherboard in having a low idle power. IIRC with a Skylake mini PC he reached basically the same power levels as a Pi - 6W at idle for example. Meteor Lake ... it certainly isn't as power efficient as I was hoping to be. The inter tile communication I guess has some issues. Or somewhere there's extra overhead. But I think that with Arrow Lake and especially Lunar Lake (which will be specifically low power and with DRAM on chip) it will be improved. I am especially hyped about Lunar Lake, I really hope it won't flop. With it we might finally have fanless ultrabooks in the non-Apple world. Anyway, getting back. Meteor Lake is very new ... and expensive. For now. The process node it's on, also seems to be more of a transitionary one, which makes me think it won't live long. So I don't expect Meteor Lake mini PCs to appear anytime soon... if ever. And if they do appear, I really don't think they'll be as cheap as, say, N100. A Lunar Lake based Mini PC would make much more sense, but I think it also will appear 1-3 years after its launch, when the process is more mature and less expensive, and the big-money market has been saturated with them. So for several years, RPi + clones should be fine. It would be awesome to have rereleases of Raspberry 0-4 with a much newer manufacturing node. If I'm not mistaken they were done using 40nm ? And RPi is using a 8nm one ? Just imagine the power efficiency improvements from such a shrinkage. And the chip will be much smaller too. And much more suited to be passively cooled. And a smaller chip would help in having its price at the same level (newer and better manufacturing nodes are more expensive than the older ones).

i agree with you on a lot of the points you make, and there are some points you may think I disagree with you on when that isn't the case :) Meteorlake has been on the market for less than 2 months now, it's still very expensive. The products being used are also full die or close to full die, some complement of big and little cpu cores, a fully enabled io tile, fully enabled soc tile, and 8 Xe cores (!), on the top die at the least. As I touch on in the video, if Intel decided to use binned tile/dies (assuming there are enough), a cut down meteorlake die using only 4-6 little cores (I'm guessing at least 1 power island core is required for the whole die to work) enabled would allow minipc manufacturers to approach a much lower price point. Another thing to consider (I didn't mention this in the video because I wanted to keep it as brief as I could) is that the n100 wasn't released until 18 months after Alderlake launched. Meteorlake is expensive for early adopters, and because Arrowlake isn't out yet. Following a 18 month post launch cadence and a cutdown Arrowlake die could probably fit into these mini pcs costwise. I don't think these sorts of machines will be around next week or next month, though $500-600 Meteorlake boxes/NUCs could be around in 6 months. The big challenge/unanswered question for low cost Meteorlake is that Intel is relying on TSMC to make most of the tiles for Meteorlake, so my question is are they binning those tiles? I'm guessing what keeps costs down for raspberry pi is coasting far behind cutting edge processes (raspberry pi 5's cpu is fabricated on a 16nm process) when selecting silicon, but a cpu that requires air cooling for what becomes bonus performance is out of character for rpi and implicitly drives up cost with the optionally required cooler. Anyway, I hope you got through all of that. Thanks for watching!

I calculated my high end desktop running 24x7 would cost me $200/yr in electricity. I picked a rate/kw/h which was probably 2-3 times what I'm actually paying. That suggests caring about power consumption of your computer is kind of silly. If I was running a data center I'd care. Running a couple PC's and PI's at my house, the difference in power consumption over a year is basically insignificant. My clothes dryer alone consumes more power in a month than all my PC's in a year. I know many people care about this stuff. I'm just not sure why. Have they not run the numbers?

Heres the thing: The pi is meant for projects, like a portable game console, or laptop. The mini pc is meant to be used as a standalone desktop
@CompellingBytes
@CompellingBytes 5 ай бұрын
**This person changed their comment totally since I responsed, so I'll make a new response** What is a "project?" there are many people using their pi as a small hypervisor, a NAS, a router, a tiny emulator box (the playstation classic is pretty much a raspberry pi specwise). I've seen videos where people use a pi for ai tasks, mini cryptocurrency miner, using it as a... mini desktop... The mini pcs with intel (and AMD, though those are *much more expensive) chips in them will allow a large portion of people buying or interested in buying raspberry pis do a lot more projects faster and easier (because the intel systems are x86-64) for nearly the same price. Previous response: Yes, these were worthwhile novel projects when you could get a pi for 40 dollars and a thinkpad t400 cost 150-200 dollars. Now, a t420 probably costs as much or a little more than a raspberry pi 5 after you buy a case and a fan and a hat and a power adapter and an nvme for the hat. There goes the portable game console and actual laptop, oh and the thinkpad portable game console has a monitor included. And you can run whatever os you want on it. What’s the pis competitive advantage right now? Also, please understand that my intent is not to "dunk" on you or raspberry pi as a device or foundation. Things are working out for them in some fashion or another. I liked the idea of the raspberry pi before, but I think it strayed way too far from its original purpose.

PI's serve a specific niche. If you need GPIO and stable software, they're hard to beat. The reason the competition never achieved the same success is they never had the same level of software support. PI's as desktop are barely adequate. The Pi5 is finally as fast as a low end PC. If I just need a cheap desktop, I buy a low end PC. The Pi was never a good first choice for that use case.
@CompellingBytes
@CompellingBytes 5 ай бұрын
You’re absolutely right. 8gb of ram for gpio projects or making a camera with a pi is overkill though, and in turn, pay 80 dollars for a pi is also overkill for such projects. As you said, pis as desktop pcs are barely adequate, and the adequate x86 mini pcs are inching closer to pi5’s price and efficiency-wise. Who is raspberry pi making the pi5 for? Someone upthread opined that contemporary raspberry pis are for Americans playing xbox games at 120fps, but here in the states you can get a thinkcentre tiny for 40 dollars and play xbox games at such fidelity.

@@CompellingBytes I do development on my Pi4/Pi5 because they're fast enough but my plan is to use the Pie Zero W2 for the final application. So get it all working and coded on the more expensive 4, then use a cheap PI for the final project. I don't think Pi5's are too expensive for what you get. If they were $150, they would be. I see people trying to press Pi's into doing chores they're not that great at. I wonder why?

Love the Raspberry Pi for what it is. The shortage just means that there is a ton of market share for the raspberry pie foundation. I know I want a couple of Pi 5’s. Competition is good. Can they compete with them Intel? I think so, as long as they’re smart about it. A lot of Intel hardware uses too much power, I think raspberry pi 6 could have a better NVme option out of the gate and Moore support for a total case solution with NVE built-in. That’s what I would like to see. they should work with 5 the main distributors to make that happen. Come to think of it. They might be able to do that now. Is it more expensive an all in one solution? Sure. However, it’s nice to be able to just assemble the parts in a few minutes and off to the races.

The raspi zero keeps with the roots of the Rasperry pi foundation but has been replaced by the raspi pico for the most part. The zero is in need of an upgrade as other competitors offer better but sometimes more expensive alternitives. The raspi 4 5 and CM4 obviously has been claimed by corparate interest and won't be coming back to the table for budget hobbist to learn on and destroy. IMO what raspberry pi is doing is great in the long term. In about 5-10 years alot of IoT systems will be run on the platform the hobbists learned on the desposable raspi zero. If the raspi zero got a bump up to 2BG RAM and still fell in the out the door price of $20 I think it would save the raspberry pi foundation image. Maybe even push into the FPGA RISC-V core section.
@CompellingBytes
@CompellingBytes 3 ай бұрын
My understanding is that raspberry pis are good for testing iot software, but such devices require hardware much smaller and more energy efficient (i.e. a controller) than what the even the pi zero can offer. There’s also a lot of alternatives to the pi. And you’re right, businesses and startups do buy lots of raspberry pis (there was the story I read about the scooter share startup that had a raspberry pi on each scooter), so maybe its the tinkerers who might be in trouble. At the same time, n100 sbcs are starting to come to market.

I know LTT faced some controversy over benchmark data last summer, but I figured it wouldn't be too big of a deal to use (and cite) a portion of video where they listed prices. Featuring the same powerful processor, Raspberry Pi 400 has specially designed thermals to keep your computer cool and silent while you’re hard at work. The GPIO pins remain accessible, so if you want to explore beyond the desktop, you can connect components and prototype your projects. The above is what the company put out. The last sentence is stating it's desktop, but you could use the GPIO pins if you wanted. But everyone else is to blame? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 THEY opened the door to comparisons.
