Dang, this fits the story told about the Big Bill Hell's parody ad. That it was created from a Baltimore ad agency and done at WBFF a local new station. Sounds like the same voiceover actor, its clearly the same music, and a visually similar layout to the ad itself.

another thing that lines up: iirc there's an interview with one of the guys who were involved in making it or someone who worked at the same ad agency. he said that the big bill hell's video was never supposed to have been spread. if it really is the exact same voice actor, it might explain why they wanted it kept secret.

Makes sense. Big Bill Hells was a joke that never was supposed to be spread around. So they just took their real ad and parodied it never expecting it to be known outside of their circle.

@@ArkiasisYeah, but someone sent it out. I got a family member who worked in TV back in the 90’s and he recognized Big Bill Hells from back then. Basically, once people had the ability to send funny videos to each other via long distance, they began to do so immediately.

Yeah, what Big Bill Hell is is simply the staff having fun with the equipment and assets they received to create the real commercial. That's the kind of cable station I work at. You'd be surprised the sheer number of "Big Bill Hell"s you've never heard of or seen in your life that still make the bicycle tape rounds to this day. The best part? The commissioner gets a better product because the staff creating it is having fun with their jobs.

There was a whole subculture of station engineers trading tapes and building collections of this stuff. I have a Betacam SP tape of bloopers and B-roll from a new station that was never aired from 20+ years ago, good stuff.

As someone who lived in Maryland during the early 90's, I can tell you Big Bill Hell's was a parody of a very real thing. It is not even this specific commercial, these sorts of ads for car dealerships were the style at the time. That was kind of "the joke" of the parody.

I guess the parody was a sort of like 'What if there was a car dealership ran by a legit crazy bastard and the announcer was equally nuts?' Also I know it's not the same voice actor but the loudness of the voice over reminds me of the announcer guy from Ren and Stimpy in the History Eraser bit of Space Madness. I get that it was kind of the industry standard at the time to get attention by being loud and insistent, but it's still funny to imagine that character yelling "HOME OF CHALLENGE PISSING!"

For the curious, Heritage Autos is still around, and still in that spot on Reisterstown Road. They've since become part of a larger dealership chain, and even Owings Mills mall itself is gone (when part of the appeal of the location originally was being right there next to a big mall) but Big Bill Normal's is still chuggin' along.

Well this got really awkward. No wonder I got odd looks when I went out to their parking lot and attempted to try Challenge Pissing in the summer of 1988. I was in the wrong place. This is why you can't make two ads that sound very similar for two competing dealerships that are in the same city. All I wanted was no down payment on a Subaru XT.
