Designer Maia Roffey of Black Sheep Interior Design gives her inside take on the budgets of three kitchen renovations, breaking down all the costs (including labour, designer fees and contingency expenses). Comparing a big-box budget kitchen, a medium hybrid kitchen with some Ikea cabinetry, and a high-end custom kitchen complete with built-in banquette and luxe appliances, this is essential viewing for anyone considering a kitchen overhaul.

I am LOVING this series! I bought a house in Houston, TX in January 2021 and have been renovating it all year. I act as my own designer to save costs since I have so many rooms to tackle. Even in Texas, I expect a full kitchen renovation to be at least $20k if I reused my current appliances. Great information! This is why this is my fave design channel on YT.

I have worked in construction as a kitchen and bath designer/ project manager for 22 years. Even in Canadian dollars these prices are right in line and totally reasonable. This in no way should be compared to what a "guy with a truck" would charge you are a weekend warrior do-it- yourselfer. This for paid professionals and materials. Life is not a 1/2 hour HGTV show people. You want something done in a reasonable amount of time, be prepared to pay for it. If not, save more money. Just don't wait too long. Supply chain problems, material and labor price increases mean you will be paying more. That is life.

People are going to react to the word budget and aren't considering a key point: this is not a DIY refresh, it's a GUT JOB. Also take into consideration that costs will vary considerably based on location. All of this is stated at the start of the video lol. Unfortunately, HGTV has way too many people convinced that rooms can be redesigned for $1500 and a couple of yard sale searches.

Just built a house and installed a new kitchen in Haliburton and these numbers are pretty realistic, in terms of material costs and trades. I think people are pretty quick to think that 30k is “expensive” for a new kitchen… but labour costs here are high. I guess if you’re handy and DIY a lot, that’s great but for the rest of us? This is a reasonable number.

I am currently redoing a small galley kitchen after a waterline leak flooding. June 2022 in SW Michigan. I am working with an insurance chosen contractor, and he won't give me a real "budget," and this makes it hard to know what to pick. This makes me pick out cheaper choices and I don't like working this way. The insurance check is $30,000 so I can only assume that this is my TOTAL budget. Your video with Nov. 2021 numbers is SUPER HELPFUL- thank you!

This breakdown is awesome! So that's ~$25,000 USD for a gut reno. I live just outside a major city so Toronto is likely similar. Very useful baseline. I can see where one can cut costs if the original kitchen is in good condition and it's more of a cosmetic reno (e.g. just replace cabinet fronts, do a flat ceiling, re-use appliances)

I just finished a gut redo of my small kitchen in the US. These numbers are pretty spot on. My labor was cheaper due to the part of that country I live in( Midwest) . I also shopped around for lower prices on certain items as much as possible. The amount I paid was still a bit more than I had anticipated, but that’s how Reno’s go! I love my new space though. Worth it

Regarding the work: This is a simple, yet impressive reno. Regarding the budget: Maybe what you mean is low budget for HGTV standards and their usual clients. In the real world maybe the better choice of wording would be "average" or "reasonable" budget. A true "low" budget wouldn't need $1200 on a dishwasher, for example.
@thehungrygoldfish
@thehungrygoldfish 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is everyone's idea of a budget is different. Yes, $5 is a tight budget for a makeover, but is it realistic for a full gut kitchen remodel? No. Yes, you can do a kitchen makeover for like $500, but it's not going to include most things people would want in a traditional kitchen makeover: appliances, cabinets, backsplash, floors, counters, other decorations, etc.

Of course, you can (and should!) reuse, recycle and DIY as much as you can to save money. But for the sake of this series, this was an even comparison of 3 price points, based on the idea that they were all full gut renovations where everything was bought new. ...As for the 1/3 price brand new appliances you speak of? We'd love to get whatever coupon you got your hands on!

All of these prices for physical goods are in-line with Australian prices for a budget kitchen. Any labor costs will be higher though. $30k is a reasonable price for a kitchen like this if you do all of the work yourself that doesn't required a certified trades-person.

I don’t want to sound negative but I feel like this kitchen could’ve had a skinny island in the middle or a bit of cabinetry against the wall next to the door. Feels like you have a fairly large space between each side of the kitchen and not a whole Lot of cabinet or counter space. I feel like this kitchen design could’ve been planned out better.
@valerieann2751
@valerieann2751 2 жыл бұрын

When you get to the actual "budget" kitchens I will be watching. A $30,000 kitchen is only "budget" to wealthy individuals. If you want to appeal to "real" working people then show what can be done on much less money. After reading the comments, I didn't watch this video because coming up with $30,000 is completely unrealistic for me. And if I ever could it would not be for box store cabinets, even if I had to renovate my kitchen in stages. As a retired interior designer, I'm not coming from a place of ignorance.
@xxx-il9dv
