By now you’ll probably have watched the Battlefield 1 trailer and, if the stats are anything to go by, you probably liked it.
For more from GamesRadar Subscribe: goo.gl/cnjsn1
There are some great videos analysing every detail, but today we’re going to dig into the history behind the trailer. It’s okay though, because is the interesting sort of history; the kind with explosions, and mustard gas, and clubs made of nails.

Some other interesting facts; - On October 14, 1918 at Ypres Salient in Belgium, a young corporal was hit and temporarily blinded with by a British gas attack. This was a young Adolf Hitler. - It was actually the French who first used gas warfare in August 1914 to little effect. The Germans matched ante, came back a year later and fired 18,000 artillery shells containing liquid xylyl bromide tear gas on the Russians. - The Pickelhaube's spike designated line infantry for instant recognition by field commanders. Artillery units wore a pickelhaube with a ball on top. - Trenches were layered three rows deep. The first, obviously, was for the front line. Behind that was for support and field HQs, and the third was for reserve troops. - Some engagements had artillery barrages that would give WW2 battles a run for their money. At Verdun, Germany alone fired four million shells in a span of ten days.

This is actually still debated as there are no records of this ever happening. Many believed that Hitler told this story in an interview to help his campaign of instilling the Nazi regime after World War 1.

Because games are based on actual history, and that history was a reality and that people become engrossed, enthralled and equally horrified by war so his statement is valid. Very true about mustard gas, even some survivors lived for years and decades never fully recovering.

Aguila701 I've seen the great war (I thought that my comment implied that I knew a lot about ww1). I'm an amateur historian, and I specialize in war history from the late 18th to 21st century. I believe that it is very interesting and I was trying to convey how upset I was that most people don't appreciate the importance of the War and understand its significance and blood loss. Not to mention that almost everybody watching this knows next to nothing about firearms or the dozens of variations of sometimes even single lines of rifles in service with a particular country.
@troyweatherford2428
@troyweatherford2428 8 жыл бұрын
Aguila701 oh, I'm glad people are taking an interest in it, but they should've known about it before. I mean can we expect them to grasp the concept of battles where millions of men died in just a day? And I hate the ignorance involving their knowledge of firearms and "all that old timey stuff".

@ghhgvgb489
@ghhgvgb489 6 жыл бұрын
Gamer you bring very good facts to the table and you definitely informed more people about WW1 but I just wish to knit pick a bit if you do not mind, The Stahlhelm did not take basin from the pikelhaubes, in fact it looked more closely to the head piece on Gothic armor. You can also see the British do this with there Brodie helmet where infact it is highly based off of there medievial crossbow men helmet. Infact the Adrian seems like the only helmet that had its own original model. The man carrying the MG in his full plate isn't even remotely meant to be based off of the Strosstruppen/Storm truppen as they never even had face guards. Although the battle field 1 devs did make mess up where in all of its art for some reason he is wearing the German sniper mask but when you're actually in the game he's wearing the Farina helmet with some sort of face plate, you can tell his armor is based off of Italian armor with some added arm and shouldrr protrction which looks scrapped from medievsl italian armor and NOT the Storm truppen lobster armor. He is also wielding an MG08 which is a German machine gun but is possible on some standards. Would have made more sense to give him a Barreta modele a Fiat revelli or on an even more far fetch then the MG08 a chauchat or hotchkiss

Here in the states they teach how ww1 started and that's about it. We care more about ww2, and only the European campaign. We also talk a lot about Vietnam, some desert storm, but for the most part it's revolutionary war, civil war, and ww2. Ww1 is treated like the Korean War. Both are pretty much blank in American history books. I think I speak for most of america.

@4:59 Is that an Italian Arditi troop? I think it is because he is carrying only grenades (and maybe knives), as the Arditi did to suite their guerrilla tactics. They predominantly used a special type of grenade called a 'Thevenot' which weren't powerful at all, but very very loud so to instill fear. These grenades look like a standard Stielhandgranate used by Germans and in some cases Austro-Hungarians so I actually don't think he's an Arditi

I remember reading a letter from a ww1 soldier, talking about how he was in the trenches, and that one time they shouted mustard gas, you only had a few seconds to put your gas mask on, and he recalls seeing one soldier who didn't put his gas mask on time, and so he was suffocating. What a sight to see, the horrifying deaths and the sense of desperation for wanting to aid a dying soldier. I'm excited for this game, can't wait to see what they have to offer.

I missed some talking about the Zeppelins. There was declared Total War, so they used them for bombing raids on London, scaring the hell out of the citizens. They were big eerie vessels that would float around the sky, dropping bombs upon bombs from an almost unreachable altitude. They seemed like the incarnation of horror and evil because they were nearly impossible to shoot down, since bullets just flew through them. It seemed hopeless. The Brits came up with a technique to shoot them down, which was to use alternating rounds in the airplane machine guns (explosive and incendiary rounds), which in theory should tear through the balloon, mix the hydrogen gas with oxygen, and the incendiary bullets should then ignite the gas. It didn't work as hoped... It wasn't until one pilot, with his last magazine, improvised and used concentrated fire on the back of a Zeppelin, it miraculously caught fire and this enormous vessel, two times the size of a jumbo jet, fell burning towards the ground.

Thats interesting that the fuel lasted for only two minutes because the side by side flamethrower tanks you see allied forces using in WWII only had enough propellant to last for an 11 second stream

Hopefully they have the German Anti Tank gun, and the Sturmtruppen as well. The E3 multiplayer has machine guns?

Genesis Teran being set in late 1918, the automatic guns were very unreliable or in prototype so it was very rare for them to be issued.

The gas was actually chlorine or phosgene gas (green cross) Mustard gas was heavier than air so it settled to the ground

Best Movie or Documentary to learn about WW1?
@seantom290
@seantom290 8 жыл бұрын
+Donovan Flugel If you can find it. I would recommend apocalypse ww1. Great series which puts the footage in color as well as add sound. Sorta puts you closer to the battlefields of ww1 and more personable. If you want to get really in depth BBC did a documentary back in 1964 of about 20 hour long episodes that will tell you all you would want to know about the conflict. If your looking for a movie, of course I have to recommend All Quiet on the Western Front. If your looking for something a bit newer then I would say go for Passchendaelle. The acting is a bit spotty at times, and some stuff is a bit "over the top" (pun intended), but the fighting scene is one of the most intense I think I have seen in a movie about the war.

The spike on top of the German helmet was meant for deflecting a sword to the head by making the sword hit one side or the other, which caused the sword to slide off the helmet, if the spike wasn't on the helmet than the soldier was vulnerable to getting a sword stuck on top of the skull, the reason people would hit a soldier on top of head with sword is because it was trench warfare, so whoever was invading the trench was coming from above, and they would strike them on top of the head for an instant kill, but the spike on top of the helmet deflected that.

Thank you for re-educating us about ww1, I learned a lot, as well as those that watched this video. Trust me when i say it is obvious not many people are truly educated when it comes to ww1's history and gruesome reality. It was not a pretty time and setting.

Good vid , but the spike on the german helmet had a reason to be there . Because of the spike , a sword would simply slide of the helmet .

Correction; If the color is that vibrant yellow/brown, it's chlorine gas. If it were mustard gas, it'd either be colorless or an extremely faint green. Mustard gas was also named as such because it smells like mustard.

I've also heared that it was named like this becouse one of the ingredients was mustard. No idea if it's correct, but it may be
@jangofresh1019
@jangofresh1019 7 жыл бұрын
That is false. It's made with ethylene and sulfur dichloride. When you mix those two together you get the nasty thing that is sulfur mustard AKA mustard gas.
