gfriend members in general were praised a lot because of their stability when singing live. most of the members were able to produce high notes (whereas they were in studio or some g5/f5s umji and sinb produced live) and mostly stay on key, something in 3rd gen didn’t happen a lot, i think. but technique-wise, they were probably never properly trained. i bet they were encouraged to just hit the notes however they could. yuju’s hardwork comes way before the gfriend days, since 15 she was already participating in singing competitions. eunha on the other hand practiced dancing when she was a child, attempted acting, but she was sick a lot too. there’s no information about her being a trainee in previous companies (some people say she was in bighit, but that’s a common misconception), so it’s very likely she hasn’t been trained at all. i really do hope bpm gets them vocal coaches to train them on the basics of singing and not just encouraging them to stay on key and reach the high notes straining their way to it

Ngl as a NaV i was also surprised bc they’re not powerhouse vocalists and I’m quite picky when it comes to vocality and technique. But they surprised me a lot so I loved the bopbop stage a lottt

It's unfortunate how much kpop companies are focused on high notes and only high notes. I don't understand how idols can go through years of training and still come out not knowing certain basics. Like, if you're gonna have them sing, do it right. I love their voices, but I know the technique isn't really there for Viviz. Gfriend was the first group I stanned when I got into kpop and I adore their music, their personality, and their friendship. Vocals aren't everything to me, but I hope they get vocal coaches for their own sake. I'm not too knowledgeable on vocals, but aren't you more likely to harm your voice without proper technique?

Because they are doing the equivalent in music to fast food, the agencies. They use a prooved scheme in music that is liked by mases and after that the only thing they can do in order to make the songs more "atractive" is to increase volume, so they need high notes. More complex music takes longer to be liked and requires more work. And vocalist needs time and effort to develop but any misshap they have can be smoothed by autotune but they can not do the same with the dancing nor the "it" factor. At the end I remember reading an interview of a coach in a big agency that said that the ones to debut are usually nor the best nor the most acomplished in all areas but the ones that had that "it" or "start" factor even if they can hardly sing nor dance, after all they can learn with time.

Eunha deep voice is so much better but she always use her cute voice and she sounds nasal and Umji has such an unique voice , Sinb needs to sing stronger

Agree. During their bop bop stage yesterday, i thought that sinb vocal is better than others as eunha and umji oftenly use their cute voice making it sounds nasally and less pleasant. Same goes during the vocal unit, they are great but i find it hard to enjoy the singing as it sounds nasally and shaky. Idk it’s not that pleasant on my ears.

@@breats4703 yeaa her soft and light approach hinders her from supporting consistently, I just hope bpm give them proper vocal coach since Sinb didn't improve that much(the other members too) in terms of vocal technique throughout their years as gfriend. Like they will not improve if there is no vocal teacher that will help them.

Im a buddy and i agree with you, with the rest of the members gone, their vocal weakness has been exposed, their lack of technique can definitely be blamed to their previous agency’s lack of vocal training and overreliance on yuju, resulting in her regression and damaged voice, they definitely needs more vocal training considering that they’re now just three and got more spotlights thanks to queendom, they need to improve. Sinb has some support and good baseline, can definitely improve if she trained more, i noticed her weakness when singing out higher notes, it sounds too airy and light. Eunha is good enough that she can sing side by side in hold your hand cover by yeonjung and soobin, thanks to her experience supporting yuju, but can definitely improve with more training, she should focus on better technique and less on belting higher notes. Umji used to be the weak vocalist in gfriend, but now she has improved much and has developed her own style

This is a K-pop wide issue. There just aren’t enough strong, well trained vocalists and it seems as though companies push them to hit notes at whatever cost without proper technique. It just hurts them in the long run and burdens a select few members as weak singers if their voice cracks or goes flat. It’s visuals and above average dance skills over anything. If you can carry a tune it seems you’re in 🤷🏾‍♀️

I think most K-Pop groups lacks on this proper technique area. I understand that not everyone can have a great voice but you can have a proper trained voice but I am afraid K-Pop is going more for the visual part and leaving the vocal part to the musical producers and autotune. PD. I am a buddy and NaV but I think that support them is not ignore their flaws but acknowledge them and support them to improve.

Kinda agree, kpop nowadays really focus on visual and dance techniques, some of them may have a great singing voice, but if they got proper training for their vocal, that would be better

gfriend worked nonstop during their years of being active so im not surprised they barely had time to proper vocal training even though the company should have tried to prioritize that they are singers after all but in a recent viviz interview umji did say she wanna improve her vocals cause she’s aware herself she’s not that good at it so i hope it’s a good sign all 3 of them would try to take lessons and improve

Yeah, like some people keep going "they don't understand why they were trained more" but kind of forget that most of the members were former trainees of different companies that didn't make their debut lineups (including Yuju btw) only to join a company that at some point nearly went bankrupt. They honestly weren't ever in a position to work on such skills, the company needed money and as their only artists they simply can't take too many breaks.

@@sunnybear178 exactly i couldn't explain it better. most of the training would usually have to be done prior to debut but eunha and umji were not trainees to any companies before joining soumu but the company was broke so resulted in them having almost no techniques in singing. there's rumor of eunha being a bighit trainee but that was never proven. sinb being a trainee since a young age probably explains why she managed to pick up some techniques even though very little since again soumu did not provide proper training

I don't know why, although their singing technique lacks practice, their voices are very melodious. especially Eunha who always manages to hit the high notes perfectly.

A small numbered group only having one technically trained vocalist is no surprise. unless you’re mamamoo there’s no more than 2 average or above average vocalist in a kpop group gfriend was lucky enough to have yuju

I am a Buddy but I agree VIVIZ really need more training an d technique in singing. Though, given the lack of it, I still applaud their stability (esp compared to alot of oother grps) and the potential is definitely relevant. I just hope they are still open for more growth and diversity despite being veterans in the industry. I personally only stan vocal focused groups like DBSK, but I stanned Gfriend as I see so much potential in them, I really hope they’ll hit that spot vocalwise

Yes they have potential if bpm company and the members themselves give time to trained more on vocals and their stage presence. Even in queendom hyolyn the veteran soloist said they had lot of potential they have to work more hard and get lots of confidence

I really hope and manifest with all my heart that they take vocal lessons and improve. It would be nice if all the members could at least support A4 consistently. Since they're just 3 I think them all should work on their vocals not just the main vocalist

To be honest, SinB could have gotten more attention if the agency used to feature SinB longer, but there are other stan members who don't accept that SinB continues to be highlighted and did a mass email to the agency and after that SinB got less attention, even though Yerin also got more attention from the agency but the stan members just didn't like SinB. And SinB only got one era, which was only 'Rough'

I hope bpm trained viviz more in vocals as well as dance. Viviz vocals don't have dynamics means powerful or soft vocals with control or stable sounds in high as well as low register because you can see in beam of prism album all songs are in mid to high register without strong vocals except tweet tweet. You can see now in queendom their weakness can easily noticed before in gfriend being 6 members their weakness was not that visible. Most of the dynamics parts of song was taken by yuju. In terms of the dance or performance they need to step up. I'm not telling their are bad dancers but now they have only 3 members which used to be 6 they can dance well but they lack in energy, facial expressions and stage presence before because of 6 members it looked really balance now they 3 get lots of screen time as well as singing lines. If you watched queendom performance you can easily able to see what I'm saying. What they need right now is trained their dynamics in singing as well as dancing and they need time to adjust themselves as a 3 members. In gfriend yuju was all rounder. After yuju it was tied between sinb and yerin. Now when they perform live they look like their giving 100% but it is not coming out that gfriend level which is used to. I don't want to compare gfriend and viviz yes they are same except being 3 members only. I know they wanted to go on queendom to show who they are i can say they have learned lots of things their what their are good at what their weakness is and how much they need to improve to become strong group.

Gfriend really reminds me of Apink in vocal technique. Only the main that can really support and the gap is big.

They are similar but at least Namjoo and Bomi can support (Namjoo up to G#4/A4 and Bomi up to G4/G#4). Eunha and Sinb are just... I love them and hope they only go within their comfort zone... That's when they're best... They have good choreographies tho, so still gonna support them no matter what.

@Baylon Nikko Sinb and Yerin in weak will be too conservative. They are way too inconsistent and don't even have a consistent supported range. I'd (and most would) say they are very weak/undeveloped right now. Still way too undeveloped to be considered to have actual support. Bomi and Namjoo at least consistently have shallow support so both weak.

@Baylon Nikko I remember weak are those who are consistent enough up to G4/G#4. Like Chae/Mi are unranked vs Miyeon/Joy/Park Bom bottom of weak. Even Joy/Yuri can support up to A4 but is inconsistent. I guess as least they need to be somewhat consistent. Also the most important bit is how shallow they are, Sinb Yerin and Eunha are way too shallow, or even non existent. Sinb most of the time is just relaxed, not supporting yet, or else Chaeyoung and Irene would also be weak. Their range can fluctuate but consistency and quality of having support must be there. Most ranks still put them at high undeveloped. (Fringe weak definition is very different between everyone, I'd just refer it as high undeveloped if that's what you mean)

@Baylon Nikko I remember KVA still putting them at F. I disagree with Mi/Chae being at E. Mina is almost just as nasal as Sana albeit more airy. Chae only supported G4 once. Irene who has better breath support is still only F. I think Mi Chae at E is too much of a stretch. There's clearly a big gap between Mi Chae and Miyeon/Yuqi/Bom, and putting them in same rank would be too much of a stretch. But no matter what, doesn't change the fact that all of them don't really support their voice, maybe some breath support (Eunha had some going up to F4/F#4, Irene consistent breath support) but not yet actual support.

we can only blame the company, i remember only sinb and yuju had coaches and then they had to teach the members, they were not properly trained and didnt even had the opportunity to do so because they were literally overworked to raise the company seven years of work nonestop, they just recently were able to take some classes cant blame them for not being the best

I think the problem is that with Yuju as an above average vocalist and the group being “consistent” (“like eating CDs” type) enough and belting on-key (but still strained nonetheless) high notes, they were quite shielded from any criticism that could potentially come in their way and also giving people the false assumption that Yuju is a great vocalist -> everyone else in GFriend is a great vocalist as well alongside with belting on-key high notes as well (the latter being the #1 false assumption of being at least a good vocalist). However with Yuju gone and Eunha, SinB, and Umji left to be in their own group and probably not doing what was required of them in GFriend (which was belting out high notes, correct me if they actually did belt out high notes in VIVIZ) exposed their weaknesses in a much more raw view and showed that there was an actual huge gap of skill between Yuju and the rest. **EDIT: to add on, I think it was mostly 75% Yuju being an above average vocalist and 25% being stable/consistent enough and belting out high notes lol.

this is a common misconception not only in kpop but in general. for example, people think rose of blackpink can be a main dancer in another group just because she's the only lead aside from lisa, but in reality she is weak at isolations, locks, staying in position, and the general foundations of hiphop and street dance - the weakest in the group on that part (jennie has better isolations while jisoo can stick positions)

There is definitely a gap, but that’s the fault of source music. I’m pretty sure they’ve mentioned how yuju was the only one who received proper vocal training (maybe bc soumu wasn’t rich in the beginning), and eunha was the one who sought advice from yuju. I’m hoping bpm considers giving viviz vocal training, or allowing eunha to use a less nasal technique. Her deeper voice is more smooth-sounding. Plus, when yuju returned to her month break for an unknown reason, eunha filled for her and they should’ve gave vocal training during that time.

You have a good point. I always viewed gfriend as a group which is always trying to improve. Yuju of course is the most gifted singer i have seen in kpop but others tried their best to keep up with her. Now they have to do it on their own. It's a challenge but I know they will come through with pitch perfect vocals someday

As a Buddy , it’s a bit true I think YUJU really made Gfriend shine , because her vocals were top I think even so she probably needed vocal training. Eunha vocals are good but they aren’t compared to sm vocalist , honestly I love the colors their voices have , like Eunha is very cute and beautiful while Umji is smooth and almost Disney princess ish and Sinb voice is nice and clear. While Yuju is powerful. I think what made Gfriend so good was their work as a team , Gfriend shined as 6. So Viviz maybe lack some vocal but I love their Vocal colors especially in “Love you like. “❤️

Yeah a really well made video.. I think nowadays a lot of kpop groups lack of vocal technique.. I hope all the company will take note on this issues... We cant blame the singers 100%.. It's kind of sad to see Kpop lose that one great point.. It used to be one of the main reason why people fall in love with kpop.. They need to balance between their vocal and their performance..

@@yunvin2105 definitely, though easier said than done ig. most kpop groups don't have strong dancers either (mostly its bgs that are consistent but they lack vocals). the only groups that have both good vocals and good dance is nmixx, exo, apink, and sistar (which is disbanded).

I think yuju's problem was that she was overworked and didn't have enough time to recover before a comeback. From glass beads up until fingertips, yuju took up all of gfriend's hard-hitting notes nonestop. She suffered the hyolyn symdrome.

I agree with you 100% that SinB is the best vocalist of VIVIZ and considering they're all subpar vocalists...that's not saying much. I really want them to have a vocal coach as they're really missing out on the very basics. To me personally, I consider Twice's Chaeyoung to be the standard vocalist and no offence to Viviz, but they even fall short from her. I kinda wish Yuju was performing with them on Queendom to uplift the performances, but like you mentioned - it's due to the over-reliance of Yuju that caused the deterioration of her voice and so it makes sense why Yuju didn't join to focus on her vocals and to promote as a solo artist where all her notes aren't all belted above C5 like it was with GFriend.

Even as somebody that knows nothing about vocals and has untrained ears, I fully agree 💀 my throat hurts trying to listen to eunha sometimes. She was probably one of the first vocalists that really helped me learn about strained vs supported vocals because I always thought it was odd how her vocals sounded so frail in comparison to Yuju's. although to be fair their difference in vocal level is so massive that they're not even comparable 😭

Kpop singers generally don't have great technique. GFRIEND members are praised because they sing relatively on key dancing or not while MANY other singers in kpop can't. There are plenty of live performances where they prove that and it's an objective truth. Are they all actual vocalists - Yuju, sure.. the rest not really. But that could be said for literally every single other performer in kpop except the "main singers". And even the main singers are sometimes just mediocre when it comes to technique.. they just happened to be the best at it in their respective team. The worst part is the fans - they mostly understand NOTHING about singing and are extremely defensive, immature and biased.

Gfriend/viviz, Twice and Dreamcatcher is the only kpop groups that i love. Their songs are very nice and different from other groups. Their B-sides songs are the best in the world. And i love them, especially Gfriend

i remember 2 years ago writing a comment saying that gfriend were also really good vocalists (at this time i hadnt any knowledge in vocal technique) under a comment listing the best vocal girlgroups of the 3rd generation. people absolutely destroyed me in the comment saying that except yuju they were all under average vocalists. at the time i thought that having a lot of high notes in their songs was a sign of them being a top tier vocal group 🤡 so thank you for making these kind of videos (that are very interesting and simple to understand) because people like the 2 years ago myself will understand that not everything is about being able to do high notes :)

I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU. It's not because SinB is my bias but SinB has always had smooth vocals, actually the lead vocal position was given to SinB but Eunha came and was given to her and SinB took the Main dancer position. To be honest, I prefer SinB's vocals, and hope that SinB gets the lead vocal position at that time but it's like the agency has prioritized other things too much. If I'm honest before gfriend disbanded, I really hope Yuju, SinB and Yerin get a lot of parts or at least they can be a sub unit, the three of them have the strongest vocals in gfriend

Personally, I don’t hear anything new from the girls based on these three clips alone. The only member displaying some sign of support is still SinB but even it’s pretty shallow compared to someone like Soyou (from the second video) who’s way more fuller and established (Eunha is still too stuck (in the nose) and nasal while Umji is too shaky). Also no, none of Umji’s high notes are supported and especially the one in the third clip was pretty strained lol. Anyways, I don’t expect her to support her high notes when she doesn’t even support in the first place lol (girl need to strengthen her vocal cords more lol).

She at least can handle Bb4s and few B4s, but the sound is quite weak even on her mid-range. Her support overall is quite shallow. @ Yep that is true,only Yuju is the one that is consistent and have enough development with her support. Yerin,SinB(probably Eunha in her rookie days esp too) have some sort of sense of support but very quite limited and very shallow. (It's too inconsistent to give them any supported range tbh). It's just occasionally present around Bb3/B3 ~ G4/G#4 ish (maybe some passable A4s for Yerin if she went into less light approach which is rare lol).

i agree for the lack of stability of Eunha's voice, we can hear in Queendom 2 too and has nasal cute voice but in live, with a nasal voice and lask of stability, she lacks powerful voice. Eumhji hasn't nasal voice, in live, lack of little bit stability but it's ok. The member in Viviz who has the most stable voice is SinB, she proved it in Queendom 2

That first G#4 from eunha is relaxed tho. Eunha early era able to support up to A4 and some Bb4 and relaxed up to C5. Her rough live performance is the best support note she ever did. But thats all. Start from navillera she lose her support and sing more light

As a Buddy , i agree to some extent , but it’s a matter of preference, I think YUJU really made Gfriend shine , because her vocals were top tier , I think even so she probably needed vocal training. Eunha vocals are good but they aren’t compared to sm vocalist , honestly I love the colors their voices have , like Eunha is very cute and beautiful while Umji is smooth and almost Disney princess ish and Sinb voice is nice and clear. While Yuju is powerful. I think what made Gfriend so good was their work as a team , Gfriend shined as 6. So Viviz maybe lack some vocal but I love their Vocal colors especially in “Love you like. “❤️

For those people who can't sing high notes, we don't care much about that. As long as they have their own technique. The sounds are perfectly fine. Since they were only three, I can hear more of their singing voice and the technique, and different timbres.

Yep. For relatively underdeveloped vocalists like all of VIVIZ, we care much more on how they do within their tessitura, especially in their mid-range, rather than how they do in their high notes, because if they're already weak within their tessitura, especially in the mid-range, there's no way they would be able to do that well with their high notes; the only exception is Haseul of LOONA who's good with her head voice, but reallyyyyyyy mediocre with the rest of her range including the range where she can very shallow support more or less minus her head voice lol.

For instance, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers (did many Broadway productions but is absolutely an undeveloped vocalist/non-vocalist lol).

we won’t know for sure the reason behind Yuju’s regression, now Eunha didn’t “regress” because she never had enough technique for such to begin with, unfortunately, though i’ve heard arguments that she had better moments around the time of their debut

yuju regressed because source forced her to keep belting out of her support range on almost every song with those crazy F5s , however her regression was very minimal she still has support up to C#5 in her mix occasionally D5 too, the only thing shes lost is her resonance and she isnt as open as she used to be. all other registers (head voice and lows) have improved since then. onto eunha she hasnt "regressed" because she had no proper technique/ support to begin with. over the years she has started sounding worse tho in her early days she supported an A4 which was just a fluke if im not mistaken to put it simple. yuju went from a B tier vocalist and it's currently B-. eunha is/ has always been F due to no technique and sinb is E+ with shallow support up to G#4 in her mix

Nayeon consistently resonating Eb5 would make her better than a lot of proficient vocalists; e.g. Taeyeon, Wendy, Eunji. That would make her quite an exceptional vocalist. However, in reality she's quite far from that. I like Nayeon's voice but we have to be realistic... lol

@@chaeerie05_ the slight differences between sinb and yuju as a dancer is, sinb offered more technically and smooth dancing but yuju is more elegant and often portraited a more powerful and elegant type of dance performance. In certain era, i often think yuju dance was more satisfying to watch than sinb but if we take in technical aspect, sinb is known to have a better technical aspect. Thats why sinb is main dancer because she know how to make everyone in the group synchronize and she is better knowledge and experiences to teach anyone how to dance. The only yuju lacks is she slows at remembering choreography and often helped by sinb.

In the end of the day Eunha is the one who got so much job to sing OST and collab with other singers. She is a lead vocalist who have more than 15 OST more than other kpop group main vocalists. After joining BPM she have collab song with Adora, ex Hybe producer and currently sing Under the Oak Tree OST with Yoseob Highlight. Both of Adora and Yoseob praising Eunha's vocal. That's what matters.

Oi, who told you that you can objectively analyze Kpop artist on their vocals? Kpop fanatics won't allow this truth to be pointed out. Only their blinded views of vocal "slaying" is allowed. For Kpop fans they listen to music with their eyes. So for them, vocal abilities need to look "cute, pretty, and bubbly". As long as their religious idols wear cute clothes and do cute things their performance will be counted as perfect with "slaying" vocals. You want to know what is worst about this analysis? Is the fact that these girls have debut since 2015. So they have been active as "singer" for so long but still are under developed as singers. I think this is because like I said earlier, in the Kpop religious world, singing comes last. The criteria for success in Kpop religions are: 1) Being "cute, pretty, and bubbly". Most important. 50%. 2) Dance their ass off. Because Kpop groups are dance groups to begin with. 30%. 3) Have contract with a big company to get the marketting power. 10%. 4) Any kinds of vocal with or without talent. Since they are going to use heavy autotune anyway, so no talent no problem. 10%. That is why they never got any proper vocal training. No point wasting extra money on vocal when they can be successful without it anyway.

This! I never really saw GFriend as a vocal group, and more of a performance group mainly due to their synchronization and their complex choreography. At the time, they stood out from their 3rd gen peers for their difficult choreography when the girl group scene was dominated by simple and catchy steps that everyone could dance along to, hence the pedestal the group was put on. Debut them today, GFriend probably wouldn't make as much waves as almost every group today has complex choreography and synchronization. Don't get me wrong: even without proper technique VIVIZ already shows they are capable singers. Imagine if their company now took the time to really give them lessons on vocals as well as stage presence (are there classes on that?) and you get a group that can really contend in the 4th gen scene.
