Another find in my VHS collection! The Annoyance Theatre produced a smash show entitled "The Real Live Brady Bunch," where actors, resplendent in the appropriate costumes for the era (Madeline Long!), recreated the campy seventies show line-for-line. The brainchild of Joey Soloway and Faith Soloway, "The Real Live Brady Bunch" sold out shows in Chicago, Los Angeles and off-Broadway in New York. This episode, "Getting Davy Jones," was performed at The Village Gate, includes Jane Lynch, Andy Richter, Mari Weiss, Becky Thyre, Melanie Hutsell, Pat Towne, Ben Zook, Tom Booker, Susan Messing, and me, David Razowsky as Davy Jones. This show ran in tandem with "The Real Live Game Show" with Eric "Wayne" Waddell, Dana Cunningham, John Copeland, and Andy Richter. Jim Jatho was our stage manager.

Even though Jan has very little lines in this one she was definitely a huge hit with the audience. Melanie Hutsell's interpretation of the character has become iconic!

Please have this show tour again! I saw this show in LA I think and it was so fun!! Ive been to many plays and this one stands out as one of my favorite theater experiences. We had close seats and if I remember right there were comfy chairs in front like beanbags and that kind of thing. I was wearing a color block jacket from Contempo and got some compliments on my appropriate attire. The actors were so great!! I would see this again in a heartbeat.. .wish it would tour again!!

I saw two different performances of The Real Live Brady Bunch around 1992/93 when they were here in Los Angeles. I about wet my pants when I saw that Melody Hutsell was playing Jan. I already loved her on SNL. I was laughing so hard, I had tears streaming down my face.

Scott Michaels Regarding the lyrics, I believe the song's at the end of this episode. Should you have any questions about what Jane's singing, shoot me an email (drazowsky@me.com) and I think I'll be able to help you. (I just Googled the lyrics but it's someone else's parody not Faith Soloway who wrote the version in this show. (I would also think that Jill Soloway helped write that song. They're quite wonderful artists and producers.)

Never knew until today about this stage show or that Melanie's great parody of Jan Brady on SNL originated here. Have to admit I'm a little baffled at why the crowd is laughing so hard at just seeing old Brady Bunch scripts played out on stage. I guess it's one of those things where just the idea of seeing the Brady Bunch anywhere but on TV was new and bizarre at that point in time.
@drazowsky

This was unique back then. Also many in the audience knew these shows by heart. When I did a few "episodes" I was amazed that people were mouthing what I was saying, and singing along with me! It was truly a weird and amazing show.

I was surprised though that this was played relatively straight compared to the parody movies.
@jedijones
@jedijones 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeremyud I think there is sometimes a point with a reference where the first time someone starts referencing it, it is funny from sheer recognizability. You are just surprised that anyone else in the world was thinking about it or remembered it like you did. I think that's what was going on here. That was especially true in the pre-internet days when old media was harder to access, and the assumption was that it would fade into history and be forgotten. When something managed to stick around and you suddenly realized you weren't the only one who remembered it, it could be funny just to mention it.
