In truth, you could say the zero value lies in the centre of the earth, but then your equations would be less readable and manageable. When two black holes merge, the resulting third black hole has lower mass than the sum of the masses of the colliding black holes... Some mass (energy) is always lost during the merger.

We're basically judged for whether we're talented enough to go to post-secondary schooling based on how well we memorize things that are mostly wrong according to modern science.
