In this makeup transformation/video essay mish mash, I'm discussing the real meaning of the inverted cross, or the upside down cross. As I've received an influx of comments from Christians and non-Christians alike that I use "evil" symbols in my makeup work, I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about the origins of the inverted cross and its true meaning - as the cross of Saint Peter.

As a Roman Catholic, thank you. Peter is in fact seen as THE first pope and tradition holds that the Vatican was built on top of Peter’s tomb because he was the ROCK on which Jesus built his church

the history of the upside-down cross is interesting, however as we know, history tends to change over time. with the cross being flipped and used by anti-christian and occult-affiliated organizations today, this alone has the power to reconstruct its meaning moving forward through the simple act of reclamation. i would love to see a follow-up video to this describing the types of groups who use the upside-down cross, their intentions, etc. i do believe that it can be used as a symbol to denote something sinister in today's world. this would make a wonderful series to explore and educate us further about. thanks!

I agree. Something can start out one way but have a different meaning over time. Societies change the meanings of words all of the time and we use them as such (their new meaning). It is interesting.

The intention behind the use of the symbols is what gives them power. I believe the swastika has been defiled but in the future in a couple hundred years i think it should regain some positive use going forward. I use the inverted cross all the time and try to spread its proper meaning

THANK YOU! I have had to teach my grandma, a devout Christian, that it is saint peters cross! She still doesn't believe me. Edit: there's also so many other things that christians don't seem to know about their holy book and religion, and it's sad that allot of people who know the most about Christianity aren't Christian, rather pagans and atheists/agnostics. Why do we know more about something we don't believe in than the actual believers?

Skai Johni honey, I learned about saint peters cross waaaay before I had ever seen this video. I'm sorry that I have much more interest in religious history than most people that I learn things and try to correct others when they get them wrong. Saint peters cross isn't a satanic symbol, and it's on you if you want to be historically ignorant.

She doesn't believe you because you are wrong. There has never been a tradition for people to use an upside down cross to represent St. Peter anywhere other than in a very limited way in the Vatican, where it represents the martyrdom of St. Peter, who is recognised as the first pope by catholics. Neither catholics nor any other denomination of Christians have ever had a tradition of using the cross of St. Peter as a symbol or an item of personal jewellery. If Christians wear a cross they only wear the cross that represents their saviour, Jesus Christ. Surely you should know this as you seem to think you know more about Christianity than Christians? And do you really think the sullen, creepy looking young woman in the video who is painting upside down crosses all over her face gives a toss about commemorating the death of St. Peter? No, she is just trying to normalise hatred and contempt for Christianity.

Coming from a catholic this video tells the real meaning, but people who use it know why they use it and it’s not because of Peter. It’s because of controversy, it sells and gets ppl talking. It’s like the swastika, it has its original meaning but ppl generally don’t use it for that meaning they use it for rascism .

I'm a Christian (though not like an American Christian evangelical type. I'm like a chill kind of Quaker, dw) and I think it's hilarious when people use upside down crosses to try and be scary and edgy. "Oh, you're Catholic! That's nice :)" "um actually I'm the antichrist gfy" I can understand the use in horror because I love horror and it's a simple way to show ~demons~, but I've seen actual Catholics wearing it as a necklace so it doesn't quite work irl to me lol. And there's so many different kinds of crosses than just the normal t one. Some look like T, some are X, +, the patriarchal cross, the Celtic cross... I wish more people knew this! Understanding what something is, the meaning behind it, and the history is so important, and we've just lost that for so many things. I really love your in depth videos. I hope this becomes a resource for more people to learn.

@@mr.kaplan7840 I'm not Catholic, so I can't say. I wouldn't find it offensive, but I would find it funny for someone to wear something so specifically Catholic as a cool accessory. Maybe look into different symbols and see if there's something that resonates with you, so you're not just wearing a religious icon for the look. I think that would offend very few people! And if you really want to wear the inverted cross and don't want to offend people, then find some Catholics and ask them either irl or online :) I hope this helps!

@@sabrecarter9482 the Bible says a lot of things. Most people wouldn't be considered Christians according to the Bible. I'm a Quaker, that is a different kind of Christian denomination. Have a look on Google. Some people say that we aren't Christians because we're so different from the other denominations. I'd say we follow Jesus more than the loud American style Christians. Also "Evangelical" in this sense is a type of Christianity, not the act of proselytising. Evangelising is also supposed to be done through deeds rather than standing on street corners shouting about Hell. You do good deeds, you show your good heart and the light inside of you shines. Other people want to join in on good things. Personally, I don't go about trying to convert people to anything really. If someone changes their opinions from something I've said it done, then that's up to them. I'm just here because Quakerism is the best description I've found of what I believe.

I read that this was a myth.. the word "blasphemy" means "reversed". There's a lot of misinformation and false teachings... The whole point of Christ is to rid of condemnation through forgiveness. The way Paul asked to be crucified seems to not be a reflection of that. Most of Catholicism is run on guilt and shame anyway..

to further illustrate the point of this video, what looks sinister can have a different meaning once you learn the meaning behind certain symbols. in this case, the makeup demonstrates the physical sacrifice and pain of saint peter as he refused to die the same way as jesus.

It’s the cross of St. Peter. I always wondered why people used it in pop culture as an anti-Christ symbol. I was raised catholic and attended Sunday school my whole childhood so it’s pretty common knowledge in my mind. Thank satan I’m not part of that anymore. Plus I’m a mega fan of Ghost!
