We all know that Kryptonite is Superman's most iconic weakness, but what is it and where did it come from? I'm not just talking about the green rock's history and origin inside of the DC Comics universe as fragments of Superman's home world of Krypton. Actually, the behind the scenes origin of how and why Kryptonite was first introduced is far more interesting. Most people believe that it traces its roots back to the Adventures of Superman radio program, but it actually goes back a little bit further in the past to a secret unpublished comic known as "The K-Metal from Krypton" that was dubbed the the most important Superman story ever written! All that and much more on today's show about the REAL origin of Kryptonite!

I read the story, and the big thing I liked was that it really humanized the Man of Steel. While he was powerless, he questioned whether or not he should continue helping people or simply stay in his Clark Kent persona. While not the crushing angst that other writers have produced, this is a pivotal point for Superman. That he chooses to continue to help, despite the fact that he believes his powers are gone for good, is an important part of the character of Superman.

I really like the idea that Kryptonite gives normal people powers. I always wondered that considering most of Superman's powers are thanks to Earth's yellow sun, is there a planet with a type of sun which would result in humans having Superpowers?

OMG I thought the same thing...I mean if Superman gets powers on earth thanks to our sun and atmosphere why can't ordinary humans have powers on Superman's planet Kripton or other planets on the DC Universe. It would just satisfy my curiosity to know.

Aniabell V Well technically we would have "super powers" on Mars. Lower gravity would make us stronger and be able to jump a bit higher so...there's that I guess

I agree that publishing that comic would change the whole Superman dynamic...Maybe they should have published it later on when Supes was more established. I don't like the idea of Kryptonite giving humans powers because it falls under the same category as the rest of the "Oh yeah, it does this as well for no reason" stuff (like memory wiping kisses).

Binge Watchers Yeah, there was speculation that the Kryptonite giving people powers was to be used on Lois with her new partnership with Superman. As in, she would have been a superhero as well. Would have changed things up a lot.

Mack Williams Blue Beetle, I think I saw a 'New 52' book some months ago that had him still alive and well. Although it may have been a Grant Morrison 'Multiversity' title so that may not count.

Katekyo504 Did you see how she reacted in the early to mid Byrne run (in the 80's) when she THOUGHT Superman and Clark were just raised together by the Kents? She was very angry and thought they were playing games with her, occasionally allowing her to get Superman stories while Superman fed most of them to Clark. :)

yeah. Lois knowing for that long... Their relationship would be way different today. In fact, I presume that our whole concept of secret identities would be slightly different if not for Superman hiding his from Lois Lane for so long.

Great video! Don't ever doubt yourself on doing to many superman videos no such thing...I love the idea of kryptonite giving normal humans powers and I actually wish dc would use it more in giving Lex Luthor body and less of his iron man type suit or maybe in giving lex Luthor a villain sidekick

I have to say Scott, I subscribe to a lot of comic book channels, and currently you are providing top quality information/entertainment with out the corny overacting trying to be funny, but failing miserably videos to date. I'm a 42 year old ex-comic book collector of the 90's..I had and still have some decent comics like x-factor 1-12, Spawn 1-23, and many other titles. My guilty pleasure was top cow's Pitt comics..I collected them and told my friends. Watch! This is gonna blow up and I'm going to be the only one with every single comic and it's variant cover..lol. But any way keep up the good work!

Fredric Brown's comment on Superman being overpowered, way back then, is interesting to me. It seems, to me, to show how misguided the complaint is back then and even today. Back then he thought Superman was the "ultimate", but clearly Superman eventually becoming even MORE powerful proves him wrong. His perception of the "best" was lacking, as is ours, as it will always be. There's ALWAYS room to be stronger, faster, smarter, and a better being overall, no matter how far we progress. And that's what Superman is all about: pushing the envelope of limitations, breaking new ground we could not conceive of before, making the impossible possible, then finding the next impossible thing to try and live up to. To complain that the limit has been reached is to define and set the limit for oneself and for others.

Andre Betita You can only be "the ultimate man" once, being even more powerful doesn't really change the balance. It's like kids playing make-believe and saying "my ultra force field stops your force field penetrating bullets".

Sorry. What I was trying to say is that Superman has always been "the ultimate", and that problem has never really changed. Sometimes they make him more powerful than he was before, but it doesn't really mean he wasn't already all powerful.

That's true. All I'm saying is it shouldn't be frowned upon as a problem, but rather celebrated as a vision of triumph, and embraced as a strength of the character. I've found that most of the best stories about Superman are ones that embrace and celebrate his overpowered-ness: All-Star Superman, Superman: The Movie, JLA: World War 3, Faster than a Speeding Bullet (by Matt Kindt), Superman vs. the Elite, etc. I don't think Superman being the "ultimate" is as much of a cause for bad stories as general bad writing is. As the stories I mentioned above prove, it's certainly not a hindrance to making a great story.

You're completely right. But there still usually needs to be a challenge for him to overcome, like in Superman Vs The Elite, or anytime he fights Darkseid. All-Stars was a really neat exception though, they told an amazing story without him ever even appearing to be in danger. But for the most part, people want a protagonist who could lose.

Thats actually one of the reasons Marvel is geting so popular. Their (famous) heroes are way more human (Iron Man, Spidey, Cap. America, DareDevil etc), even the Guardians of the Galaxy, that are usually fighting aliens, are closer to us once they use guns, sword and their fists. Just look at DC's most loved character: BATMAN. Every issue he gets more scared, confused and week, not in a bad way, but to make him more human.

JP Kloess I would point again to a quote in the early 1940s by Fredric Brown who said that Superman was too overpowered. So that thought about the character has been around almost since his creation.

Just wondering if you have ever done a history of adamantium? I know it has appeared outside of marvel comics. The main one that i can think of is in the Greek story Prometheus unbound, where hercules free Prometheus by braking his adamite chains. You have always seemed really good with researching so i think this would be an interesting one to do.

I am surprised you didn't mention the golden age Lex Luthor's power stone. Its ability to grant humans powers and its green glow were very likely the inspiration for k metal, and there for kryptonite and meteor freaks.

shea reinke The power stone premiered in Action Comics #47 which was written in 1942. The K-Metal story was written two years earlier.

In fact, the end of the K-Metal story had a cliffhanger where someone stole some K-Metal. It was speculated that the Power Stone story would have been the follow-up story.

I've actually commissioned an artist to finish the last two "uncolored" pages needed for the comic to be considered "complete". The owner of the site featuring the webcomic said they just need them to be refined a little before he could accept them.

first video i've seen by you guys, great video really like all the sauce on the video description as well. definately have a lot of reading research to do. I've allways wondered what is the similarity between kryptonite in the comics and the actual Kr noble gas in the periodic table of elements is. Which came first? Was the element named for the one in the comic by a superman fan chemist or did the comic writers like the name of the element when they saw it in the periodic table? Or is it just a big coincidence?

Man this is funny seeing this video since I am doing an entire project on the radio serial and comic books from the Golden age. Alot of what you said is very true regarding Superman is true, and I Kryptonite being introduced earlier with the k-metal story could have very well changed the character that we know today. Its pretty shocking just how much the radio drama had altered Superman's origins. (I still find it funny how he was a full-grown adult in the radio drama and didn't grow up as Clark Kent but was given the name by people he saved) Really goes to show how the creators didn't fully think through Superman's characterization.

This is an awesome video. I always thought kryptonite was originated/adapted from the radio shows. Unfortunately, it seems the restored comic wasn't fully completed. 2 pages seem to still be incomplete. I wonder what other amazing incomplete comic books from DC are still out there.

RgxSuperSonic Yeah, that's why I said it was nearly complete. It's a bummer that one of the pages that isn't finished is the one when he reveals himself as Superman. That would be a nice page to have. And I was just thinking about how many comics there are out there that have been lost to time. Wish I could read them all!

I really think that they should have published the "K-metal" story. My biggest problem with superman has always been that he is too perfect. This story would have really given depth to all characters involved, superman especially. I think it would have changed the dynamic of his and Louis's relationship. Opening up many more doors like could she even come to terms with him being an alien, or with a new found weakness would his confidence be shaken. Plus not having louis's full support to help him though everything. I think it would have made him more relatable

I've written about this comic I would very much has wanted to see it published. It would have created a different dynamic and evolved the story of Superman and of Lois, plus adding the "meteor freak" idea early would have created some interesting foes for Superman in the future.

Max Scribner The K-Metal comic actually predates the radio show with a lot of stuff that was introduced into the Superman mythos, but the radio show was the first one to officially debut stuff.

Hey Scott, do you think you could do an episode on Miles Morales? Specifically the full circle of Donald Glover. How he was one of the two big inspirations for Miles (the other being Barack Obama), and then how he was cast to play Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. I just love how that whole story shows how life and comics build off each other.

I like that it gives powers to humans. You could even have a comic on how that relates to how Kryptonians got their power in the first place as it is through the minerals that they eat and live with 24/7 that gave them the power to harness the sun. Which then would make sense why the radiation from said rocks would also do the same for 'aliens' of different planets in an accelarated rate. Also could finally give an answer to why that also hurts Kryptonians. As it can be explained as it gives them too much energy or that the radiation mix in powers would cause a harmful reaction making it so that instead of gaining new powers it causes pain and eventually death. So if they did this we would need to go around the issue of too much exposure to the green rocks would give radiation poisoning. In this matter we could also explain how the other rocks go into this too. Red could be absorbing powers even just temporary so it would work on both Kryptonians and GK powered beings. If they did this though we would need to possibly explain how powers develop. Maybe something along the lines of smallville where powers have a relative to what happened to you around the exposure. So something simple like just finding a rock would potentially give you power but it might not be much of anything like giving you super white blood cells which then would explain why not just anyone can take the rock and gain the powers from it. It could also be a risk to experiment with them and artificially create senerios to give these powers by causing death, for the simple fact that it is both an experiment and that accident of causing the power.

I'm a big fan of Smallville, and the way it was introduced in the show--with the people around Clark becoming massively effected from the effects of the krytponite day to day, he was quickly forced to switch gears from being just a normal farm boy. Fighting people with the ability to morph, become invisible...and so on, is probably a good training ground for the future caped crusader.

Daredevil is someone with a ton of misconceptions like how the radiation does not enhance his senses anymore he just learned to do radar sense without it. The problem is most if them can't be made into a whole video. Oh but you could always do a video on super pets that would be awsome.

Kcomix Marvel has made it that their characters are sinonimous with their powers now. To the general public, to them, daredevil looks like a cheap Batman knock off, since the movie with Ben Afflect gave it a bad image. A shame, since the character is one of the best developed and flesh out characters Marvel has done. One of the best artial artist ever that makes you reflect on the nature of justice like only a lawyer could.

This was cool. Could you do more videos about fictional elements and metals in the comicbook world? Well, to be sappy, I believe Superman's weakness is humanity. While Kryptonite does some temporary physical damage, it shouldn't be treated as a dues ex machina every time a bad guy/gal happens to get their hands on some. If DC wants to put more weaknesses to Supes, then just expand on his Kryptonian anatomy. I remember with one animated movie involving an AU, Superman was kept away from Earth's sun, thus he was pretty weak and child minded.

Man, all these years I had heard that story about the radio show and why they made it up and it was wrong. :) As for the comics I always preferred the Post- Crisis take on it, mainly that there was only one kind of Kryptonite and that there was only a pound or two on Earth total (even though John Byrne, one of the creators behind that idea admitted that he himself had that one rock cut up so much it really didn't make as much difference as he had thought it would :) ). I also have to say, in the modern comics, during that point where Lois knew Clark was Superman and they worked together (and were engaged, then later married) was actually my favorite version of their relationship. It was fun watching her help cover for him and help him out from the sidelines. Way more fun than her being oblivious to him or being angry because he scooped her on the latest Superman story. I think the idea of Kryptonite giving humans powers only worked on "Smallville" as an explainer to where all the super powered people were suddenly coming from and why they were congregated around Smallville in the first place. In comics it seem unnecessary since super powered people are everywhere. I did like the idea of long term exposure giving humans cancer though as that's logical.

I like how K-metal also happens to give "super powers" to humans the same way being on earth instead of Kripton made hims Super human. It would be interesting to see a Superman villain who has his powers while super man doesn't.

Can you do a video on characters that first showed up on other media outlets outside of comics but was then adapted to be in cannon with the comics such as Harley Quinn. And if you have the time can you do this for story plots (such as Dr Freeze wife plot )

The abundance of 'meteor freaks' on Smallville became tiresome after awhile, I'm glad they largely did away with it in later seasons. A few here and there seems reasonable, but a new one every week was a bit much.

Lost in space use to encounter new types of aliens or creatures or machines every week but later they would have return of the same creatures, aliens and machines of course some of that was to cut their budget they also reused stuff from Voyage to the bottom of the sea made by the same company Irwin Allen productions.

Makes the storys interesting, I'm fascinated about kryptonite , besides using kryptonite to kill superman etc etc, I found out it has the energy output of 100 nuclear reactors last for decades with refueling and is used in manufacturing advance electronics etc , imagine a kryptonite meteor the size of a small country like in the "superman/batman public enemies" movie and was safety landed on earth, earth would have the power and technology to build space exploration expedition systems to spread and expand our reach lol

The serial you mentioned before had an episode where in a dream sequence Lois and Jimmy got Superman-like powers from what a scientist called "positive kryptonite", the stuff that weakens Superman is the "negative kryptonite". That was a weird show.

***** Hey Scott did you know in the show "adventures of superman" episode 13, season 6. A genius old scientist named professor Pepperwinkle constructed a machine in which simple fragments of metal can produce a whole ingot of gold. But then united states secretary of treasure, John Salem and world bank president, Delbert Carter, head to the daily planet with the editor Perry white Lois lane, Jimmy Olsen , Clark Kent , and finally the professor, to discus about the machine. Salem and Carter talk about the danger of the machine and how it can ruin the economy. Salem and Carter then tell the professor to promise not to use the machine, the professor promises along with the others in the editors office. While the professor, Lois, and Jimmy go out to lunch, Jimmy starts start discussing the possibilities of machine while two other men over here them. As always, the two criminals force the professor to make gold or his friends and him will die. Later on Jimmy and Lois head over to check on the professor, then when jimmy enters, a sandbag hits him on the head. It is then revealed that it was the professor who struck Olsen due to confusion, thinking he was the crook. Few moments later Olsen is OK and the professor gives Lois and Jimmy POSITIVE KRYPTONITE PILL. While he dose this he explains how there are two forms of kryptonite, NEGATIVE which takes away Superman's powers, and POSITIVE which grants superhuman abilities. Then after the pill, Jimmy and Lois become super powered and help find the two crooks. Jimmy and Lois jump/fly and spot them at a warehouse using x ray vision, punching the door and knocking them out. When they return to lab, the professor is taking down the sand bags when all of sudden the sandbag hits Olsen and knocks him out. Weird right? Well turns out when Olsen got hit by the sandbag he was unconscious and dreaming his super human ability's helped save the day. In a instance the two crooks enter and force the professor to make the gold when super man arrives and saves the day. But the negative and positive aspects of kryptonite interest me! Well thnx for reading this huge summary.

As always, I have something to add, hopefully helpful. 1 - As to why so much of the stuff wound up on Earth, at least one late 70's comic has an answer. In Action Comics 500 (and this time, I'm sure) a kid asks Superman flatly why so much of Krypton ended up on Earth. Supes states that Jor-El's ship was actually a warp ship, and that its passage opened up a doorway between Krypton's far more distant system (originally it was either in a nearby or our own solar system, IIRC) and our solar system. Where the ship went, so did the K. 2 - Your friend's vid likely covers this, but two types of K did empower Humans, being X and Anti-K. I think one of them was toxic, eventually. I don't recall enough. I'll check the link. 3 - In a George Reeves ep, # 98, 'The Big Forget', they actually use the trapped-mine scenario, with Clark uttering words I just love 'Well, there's no point in keeping this a secret any more'. He gets up, bursts the ropes he's bound in, and changes in front of everyone, though in this case, he has an out that Lois lampshades right away. A scientist with them has some kind of anti-memory gas, and she snarkily remarks that he's going to use the gas, which Supes confirms without apology. One of a few eps where they dart around the reveal without actually going there. 4 - The Byrne/Wolfman Post-COIE reboot was the first IIRC to have K affect Humans long term. I agree with this approach. If you think about it, K was produced by an atom bomb the size of Jupiter, building up for millennia. It is likely the most radioactive stuff in the universe. Like as not, it affects Kryptonians immediately because of trace metals common to both the K and Krypton's Human-like inhabitants. Around Humans, its like getting near low-grade uranium. It just takes time. 5 - I have this bit of off-the-wall speculation, just for giggles. In the graphic novel Watchmen, Hollis Mason reminisces about vanished comic book heroes like Superman, who gave way to the pirate comics the series uses. My WMG : In that world, the K-Metal story was published, and was detrimental to the long-term viability of Superman's sales. What would have happened in RL is anyone's guess. Though if this had led to an early canon marriage between Lois and Clark, maybe heroes would be permitted to have a happy home life sometimes, as it wouldn't be so alien a concept.

Okay. X-K could give temporary powers to anyone, including a young comatose girl who awakened and believed she was Supergirl (Superman Family 203 in 1980) and Streaky The Cat, back in the day. Anti-K could somehow affect Humans just as quickly as Kryptonians.

As for kryptonite granting powers, I'm not the biggest fan of the idea in general. However, I really appreciate that there's a comic base to why it was done on Smallville.

I liked how people gained powers in smallville from kryptonite, but at the same time... that basis was used a whole lot. i understand the how and why and whatnot. (meteor shower accompanying clark and whatnot. but... ehh...

It has actually seemed to me to be that kryptonians have natural powers but the sun turned red as it aged thus rendering their minerals change perhaps and the red sun neutralized their powers. Thus the El’s theorizes that he would have power under a yellow sun that doesn’t neutralize his powers. So kryptonite rocks are a neutralize agent to him when around. So it’s not that the yellow sun grants his powers but that a yellow one does not hinder his space race powers.

I think used well it could actually be really entertaining... I mean, mere hoomans with powers thanks to a rock is not new but if it also causes damage on the long run... and antagonizes superman as well... or what if they used it for the good, but when Superman wants to make them understand that is killing them they think "he's jealous, he wants to be the only one... etc" becomes a villain like Syndrome??? that would be cool, cause then they would be giving kryptonite superpowers to everyone!

Superman is supposed take on anyone know matter how powerful they are. He's called superman for a reason. Though I love to see humans getting the same powers as superman from the kryptonite. That's means batman can fuck kick the shit of supes if he was infected by the rock.

Not sure if anyone remembers the finale episode of the George Reeves' series, "All that Glitters". In it, a professor discovers that Kryptonite is composed of positive and negative elements. The negative is what is toxic to Superman, while the positive is what gives him his powers. The prof isolates the positive element and administers it to Lois & Jimmy, giving them super powers.

I always wondere how far away Krypton was from earth, i assume several light years, i believe Kalel escape pod had some kind of hyperdrive device, but kryptonite fragments? Those things should take thousands of years to reach earth.

Maybe superman's pod created a wormhole to earth and the gravitational pull of said wormhole pulled in the kryptonite, explaining why there is so much on earth.

RZ-357 They took this question on in a recent superman comic (i don't have the sauce but I watched an interview with neil degrass tyson that explained it) where physicist used a bunch of telescopes to look at the destruction of krypton and actually used a real exoplanet they discovered that was circling a red star about 32 light years away. Since Superman was supposed to be about 32 years old in the comic they were able to watch the planet explode from earth. This is part of the new 52 origin of superman but it was pretty cool and they actually had Dr. Tyson in the comic since he helped them develop the story element.

Kryptonite does not actually harm or weaken Kryptonians. They have three hearts and care about human feelings almost three times more compared to humans. When humans beings began to fear Superman; Zod invented the idea of giving humans less fear. Zod trained Superman to feign being weakened and harmed by his home planet. I have never heard of any power granting Kryptonite. Excellent history of comic books. Thank you and I hope to see more.😊

ok so i know im late to the party (blame youtube it was like ""hay you may like this video"") so one thing that has always bugged me about Kryptonite is that it dosnt work right, so most writers have it so it makes him weaker (ok im fine with this so far) then it normally makes it so he can stand up and is in pain and that's where im like ""nonono wait what, it does what how does that work?" to which they say something about it blocking superman's powers and..... and i butt in with so it makes him normal aka he becomes Human (thou with a higher body density) because superman without his powers is a humanoid alien so why is it causing him pain its like saying that uranium cause us pain, it may be killing us but that doesn't happen right there on the spot its week, months or years before we show signs. now as i was typing this i did think of a reason for the pain (thou its unlikely) when the radiation from the Kryptonite blocks the yellow radiation from our sun the energy stored in his cells could start to break them down. but anyway thats just my little bugbear about Kryptonite.
