I’m gonna be honest, if they didn’t want Li Mei in a skimpy look to fit her character, throw her into her old outfit/gi, it fits her better with how she’s characterized and if they wanted to censor it, they could just close the top part and it could still work.

Here's what I hate about Nitara's censored design: it actually sexualizes her more. How? Because despite wearing less clothes in Deadly Alliance, her colours were balanced properly, making us focus on her whole design. HOWEVER, her censored design in MK1 has so much plain red in the body suit that it subconsciously tells you these parts aren't important. What happens? Our eyes are guided to her chest because it's the most detailed part of the design. Bravo, NetherRealm! 👏

As an artist myself I share the same thoughts. If you're not going to remake the costumes identically and improve on the designs without censoring so hard don't use the costumes at all just do something new - I'm also still torn on Frost's 'Classic' costume not actually being 'Classic'.

Seriously, it's insane how even Nintendo is less prudish about the women having exposed skin in their games. Peach in a bikini in Mario Odyssey. The Gerudo pretty much walk around and fight in their bras in Breath of the Wild and just about every Fire Emblem female has been given some type of waifu skins in at least one game. I miss playing the game and having to unlock half the roster, and cool alternative costumes. These days I have no reason to keep playing passed the story mode and maybe the arcade endings. The very slight differences in costumes unlocked via regular play is insulting.

My opinion on the manner is that if you aren't going to try to make the costume as faithful as possible, then don't even bother with it honestly.

As a kid i never thought about the sexuality that comes with the skimpy outfits. I just assumed that they were fantasy characters and fantasy characters dress differently than regular humans. It absolutely got out of hand at one point, but i do think that the skimpy outfits made non earth realmers feel like they're from another place entirely.

I'm surprised that they didn't use Li Mei's Deadly Alliance primary. I always thought it was the most memorable, despite not making it into Armageddon. Plus I always liked how the developers notes mention that it was a lot of the female devs favorite costume. But yeah...the new 3D era costumes do remind me of this meme in which a kid is asking his parent if they could buy something, for this example, that would be the classic 3D era costumes. But the parent says no, we have them at home, immediately cuts to the M1K versions as the ones at home. ......Memes aren't as good when you have to describe them.

Honestly what baffles me is that Onaga has been denied the spotlight in the modern entries for literally 4 games in a row and I just find that really inexcusable….like alongside that and NRS's stubborn refusal to expand there creativity to update and show more love towards the other absent 3D era reps like the aforementioned dragon king as well as likes of the sons of Argus and others. Heck even getting costumes from this era is apparently asking too much from this supposedly talented and successful company because I assume this company is full of 90s era boomers who probably also have a shallow biased against the 3D era. Like for heavens sake even some of the canon cast get some guest character costumes or skins such as Johnny Cage's John Claude skin in M1K or Jax's Carl Weathers skin MK X so like why can't we also get more of those 2000 era costumes as well. But I guess selling out to a bunch of guests is considered far more easier or important simply because of easy cash clout while ignoring half your own series reps certainly shows more love towards other companies then your own brand NRS.…like there fun fan service and I personally enjoy some of them but hopefully you get what I mean. Like during these two decades NRS could have so easily made these characters work in the modern age by now. It just makes them come across as a Creatively bankrupt company when all they they ever focus on is recycling the same original trilogy cast and shoe horning in a bunch of guests for the most part. There for giving fans especially newer ones this impression that the 3D era is worthless garbage to be ashamed for liking. Such wasted potential for these characters.

I think Li Mei’s DA primary was generally more popular to bring back and her samurai armor would’ve been a better contrast compared to her robe designs. For Nitara I would say unless they plan of giving EVERYONE a 3d era costume they should’ve just picked another character. Ashrah would’ve been perfect bc her design was already very modest and it could’ve given her a more normal face for a skin or even Kitana and Tanya might’ve worked with their leotards since we had mk2/3 costumes last game.

With MK being embarrased by it's skimpy history, their overblown, overly dramatic storylines, and the constant push for higher graphics. I think MK needs to start taking itself WAY less seirously. Original MK was basically everything edgy and extreme in the 90's mashed up. What if Image Comics was drawn by Boris Vallejo. It was honestly juvanile. And I think MK as a whole could stand to check its own ego and go back to when things were fun. Fatalities used to be silly, funny, rediculous. Now they're so overly, maticulously detailed that it isn't fun anymore. They're downright disturbing, gross and unpleasent. And it's such a harsh contrast when you go back to the story mode and it's all these grim growly men growling grimly about the fate of the world and the multiverse. Just like... calm down y'know? EMBRACE THE SLLYNESS.

This downward spiral of nrs has really caused me to mald for like a decade now. I've grown up on post-classic mk and i absolutely adored its design, atmosphere, music and fairly weird sense of humor. The world building was very unique too. Of course, brushing off a story about cyborg ninjas, special ops units and japanese gods fighting a somewhat mongolian naked dude from another dimension is fairly easy to do but if you looked closer, you'd see a very uncommon world, I mean, a fantasy setting where the creation myth is not blatantly copied from the mythologies of our own world is a rarity in and of itself but they did it and they went an extra mile to actually write lore about all the realms, fractions and characters. Of course, that was until mk 9 came along and just took a fat shit on all of that. I still played all the nrs games, I even had fun doing so until mk 11 came by - that was the point where they completely switched their focus too multiplayer service bullshit and I really thought that I wouldn't buy the next game but I did, to play online with brothers. Little did I know, we made the mistake of buying the game in different stores on pc and nrs didn't include fucking crossplay between steam and egs. The content that was present in the game at the time was pure shit, I mean, the single player campaign started off alright but it degraded to the multiverse bullshit somewhere in the middle and, honestly, I don't know why would they do a reboot if they would go back to the same lobotomite story by the end. The invasions mode was just a waste of time, the optimization was horrible, the fucking servers were down half the time. Though, the thing that made me finally break was the Scorpion Deadly Alliance skin - the first time I saw it I thought I was tripping but I wasn't, they really couldn't even get THAT right. The costume itself is a weird mashup between his deadly alliance one and the one from the intro of Shaolin Monks with a silly fucking burned head, which scorpion literally never had, but on top of that, he, for some reason has resident-evil-weak-spot-orange coloured eyes. Why? WHY? Scorpion always had white eyes, shit, they even gave him white eyes for that goofy second costume. This was such a small thing but it finally broke me. If they don't give a shit about their games, then I can't either. I won't be bying the next game unless some miracles happen and they'll rebember how to do decent games, which is sad because this franchise was my favorite since I was 3 years old. But oh well, mk seems to be VERY profitable to WB, so it's very unlikely that any miracles will happen anytime soon

I can't believe Netherrealm Studios butchered the Mortal Kombat era from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon. They could have used Li Mei's Deception alternate outfit or make each character nostalgia outfit accurate as possible. Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 nailed it so Mortal Kombat 1 has no excuse. We want outfits that is accurate as the last games. You're right Snake, the outfits are bad pure and simple not because of lewdness and they ain't worth the money.

Mortal 1 Kombat has a problem with the designs for their characters in general. If I watch a trailer for a new character reveal and it has to be directly said to me who it is instead of being instantly recognizable, you've fucked up in the design department. I shouldn't have to question when an old man kameo shows up whether its supposed to be Old Shang Tsung or Shujinko; it should be instantly recognizable in their design. Same goes for Tanya, my brain shouldn't have to go ''wait who's this?'' or ''is this a new character?'' I should instantly know but that doesn't happen if you change a characters entire design and get rid of their identifiable features and then need to have another character in a trailer tell me who this is supposed to be.

I think the aversion to any kind "sexy costumes" in modern MK just looks even more silly when games like Street Fighter 6 and even Tekken is allowed to show off their characters in those kinds of outfits if if they are alternate costumes or whatever. It kinda makes MK fans look like chumps when they are told they can only have family friendly levels of sexiness that makes MK look more like Marvel movies, Meanwhile Cammy in SF6 is allowed to look like Cammy.

I was thinking about this yesterday. How from an outside perspective and out of context it looks like MK fans are mad that women are wearing pants. But that's not it at all. It's Netherrealm taking an empty stance about clothing that no one had an issue with and selling fans nostalgia, but not really because it's not a faithful recreation and it's over priced as hell. That said, I'm a sucker because I will be buying Kenshi's classic skin, especially if it's his Deception costume.

I agree that they are way overpriced as I think for the price of one costume in MK1 in MK11 you got 3 costumes and gear pieces. Honestly, my problem with Mortal Kombat, honestly since the beginning, is pretty simple: In all of their mature hyperviolence, they are still scared to have characters that are just confident about their sexuality. You might argue about it with Mileena in certain titles, but every other character just feels like they are put in costumes that they themselves didn't even choose. You don't have characters that are sexy and they know it (Granblue is an amazing example there because it has multiple characters, both male and female, that just absolutely revel in their sexiness). You don't even have characters that have bigger proportions, both stereotypical sexy and just bigger in general. I don't expect Mortal Kombat to pull something like a Baiken or Taki with massive breasts or Goldlewis with a massive everything, but the lack of different bodytypes just reinforces this feeling of "nothing to look at here, please move on." Like seriously, is it too much to ask for to not have every woman that isn't a ninja not in high heels? There are other shoe-types! And I'm not even like "oh, I don't like high heels because they're sexual." I'm a guy who gets off way more with woman in massive combat boots. Give me that. The one character that should have high heels is Sindel, because she's a floating queen that uses her subjects, hair and voice to fight. Long story short: unless you are into women on high heels that all have the same bodytype but with different hair like they're all mass-produced barbie dolls, you don't have alot to look at. Hell, if you are into guys you have nothing but fit fighters with roughly the same body type except for Shao Kahn.

Skimpy costumes and gory fighting were two traits of MK that I recall in my youth, and this was when I was two young to really sexualize anything. Now that I'm in my 20s, it's just odd to see NR really push back against sexual clothing. I recall Jade doing a sexual advertisement to nominate MK for an award, I think best female fighter? And I remember everyone loving Melina's mummy outfit in MK9 for the fact that it exists as an unlockable to fight with. Really felt like NR was embracing the sexual attire for MK back then, but I guess not anymore :/ shame that. It doesn't impact me that much, just a shame.

here is my thing with the whole sexual outfits thing, 1st of all this is the same series that created the rating system so trying to be more "mature" and less risque and caring about what non fans think is stupid, 2nd how is skimpier attire seen more as a problem than characters in gameplay being allowed to murder their close friends/lovers/family or the creepy ass comments made by both male and female villains in mk11, 3rd there is never much complaint for men being shirtless and wearing shorts but there is for women and bikini's (both can be seen as sexual and empowering so shut it), and 4th, there are a lot of characters in universe that it'd make sense for to dress that way (edenian's are known for their beauty, skarlet absorbs blood on her skin, mileena is based off a venus flytrap, nitara is a vampire, it's hot asf in the neatherrealm so attire like sareena's makes sense, and ninja's male and female are known for wearing less clothing since it gets in the way less, ect). idk maybe I have just grown indifferent to the topic sense I get tired of one side calling people who disagree with them woke sjws and the other side calls people who disagree with them sexist creeps and at the end of the day it's not really anything that important and it doesn't really affect anyone other than the people who make the content, if it were up to me I'd just have a perfect in between of skimpy and covered for the defaults of males and females both, and for unlockables have fully covered and skimpy attire for the male and females that way everyone can be happy and anyone who complains at that point is just people complaining to complain

There 2 things that i really like about DA Nitara - the headband covering her eye and those majestic wings. God damn, she looks awesome. M1K Nitara's tiny wings don't draw any attention and the eye cover is missing so combined with this fugly bright red, instead of dark crimson, the only thing that draws the eyes in this costume is her exposed chest, which I'm pretty sure wasn't the intent xD And Li Mei's costume is kinda whatever. It's not faithful, but at least it doesn't look horrendous.
