Dogs do some weird behaviors, like sniff people’s and other dogs’ butts, follow you into the bathroom, and tilt their heads to the side.
But these aren’t random behaviors.
Scientists have discovered there’s an important, but often unexpected reason behind each of them.
See the explanation for these weird dog behaviors in this video.

That's common sense because most butts and crotches are nose level to the dog so it's the first thing in their convient path of sniffery.😂🤣

My daughter & her boyfriend were visiting his sister. My daughter's dog smelled the sister with much greater gusto than usual, then he refused to leave her side. A short time later, they were mixing drinks but the sister "didn't feel like having a drink." Their eyes met & a lightbulb went off. Yes, she was pregnant but wasn't ready to tell the world. The dog alerted them that something had changed (since he had last seen the sister) and the refusal of alcohol confirmed what the dog had indicated.

The rolling in smelly things reminds me of a story a comedian once told, where his dog, during a walk along the river, had intensely rolled in dead fish washed ashore. He brought her home and started giving her a good shower. She didn't want to be showered, however, so she shook herself and got a lot of the smelly mess on him, too. So he thought, while he already was at it, he'd just take of his clothes and get into the shower, too. A moment later, his cleaning lady, who was too early for her job, opened the apartment door unexpectedly, and was greeted by the following scenario: An angry dog, shaking and howling, coming out of the bathroom, followed by a completely naked man saying: "Yes, my dear, I know that you don't like it, but you just have to endure it." He's now looking for a new cleaning lady.

My vet told me that the reason dogs sniff butt is that they can tell just about everything they need to know about someone or another animal by sniffing their butt. What they eat, if they have dog friends, how old they are, how healthy they are, do they live indoors or out. etc. etc. He also said not to waste your time trying to break them of it.

Just get a Dog and love it, make time to watch them grow. If you are wise enough, you will come to understand exactly what your Dog is saying to you and your Dog will Understand what you are saying to them. Trust comes from understanding; Trust turns to love. Get it, all just a circle. Give a Dog love and you will understand them.

My brothers dogs kept eating his poop for awhile and we really couldn't get him to stop, we had to bring him to the vet like 3 different times before we figured out what's wrong, basically he's the equivalent of a diabetic for dogs bc his body can't break down his food normally so he was always hungry because he, despite being fed 2 times a day both wet and dry food, got no nutrition from it bc of his condition. It was truly hard seeing him so skinny and people telling us to feed our dog more if he was in public bc he was nothing but skin and bone but there wasn't anything we could do until the vets figured it out and sent us the medication he needs to be able to eat

Animals will often eat there poop for many reasons normally they do it when there baby's because they're digestive system is still developing the enzymes it needs to properly digest it's food.Normally they grow out of it.Another reason is there lockup in a cage for to long and the owner get mad when they poop in there cage and mishandling's the dog so it'll eat it so it doesn't get beat. It's one or the other health problem or mantel problem also your dog has to eat three times a day not two so you're probably starving him.Look like the owner needs training.

When we had our dachshund we had one of those plastic carriers (for a larger dog) that we established as his safe zone. We all in the house knew to leave him alone when he was in the tote. Every now and then my wife would clean out the tote, wash his bedding, and discover all kinds of stuff hidden under his bedding. Socks, underwear, matchbooks, candy wrappers, snowballs(fluffy toys) and other assorted things...kind of his stash of things to play with when we were gone from the house. We once found our spare set of keys hidden in there.

I learned from my dog the reason they go in circles to lay down. As a long legged pup she would just plop down, always sounded like a rough landing. By watching her, I figured out that her legs needed to be synchronized to lay down gently. She was abandoned at two days old. The animal shelter trained her pretty well. A Belgian Malinois, I wouldn't recommend one for children! They need to work!

thousands of years ago dogs were very advanced creatures, each came with a detachable bumhole. whenever they entered a building they left their bumholes outside. one day when all the dogs were meeting in the great hall they were attacked by their enemies the wolves. in their desperation to get into the fight each dog grabbed the first bumhole he could find. the dogs won that day but at a cost, non of the dogs now had their own bumhole. to this very day whenever dogs meet they have a sniff to see if the other dog happens to have their bumhole. true.

2:05 Dogs love to eat cat poop. A few years back I had a neighbor that was a vet tech. I asked her about this. Her explanation was that cats don't absorb all the protein from their food, so some of it goes out in their poop. Dogs can smell that protein and they want it. It doesn't hurt them, but it does give them horrible bad breath. My sister used to have 2 dogs and three cats (they live in the country), and the dogs would go through the cat litter box looking for what my brother-n-law called "pecan sandies". Their vet confirmed what my neighbor explained.

I don't even give my dog bones anymore. Scares me, When I was child our female dog Janet, a beautiful female mix that we rescued with a great personality was hanging out with me one evening and she was making some strange head movements and paying around her mouth. On fist inspection I didn't see anything in her mouth. The behavior continued so I grabbed a flash light and pried her jaws open again. She had a pork chop bone that some gave her that fit the top of her mouth sideays like a glove. It looked like part of the roof of her mouth. I got a hold of it with my fingers in the back of her throat and pulled it it and it was stuck pretty good. She was so happy she had the zoomies once it was out., Thank she didn't dislodge it and try to swallow it, That would been a real mess and surgury.

I came to the conclusion about fifteen years ago that dogs sniff butts in order to learn several things about another dog. They have extremely sensitive noses. They can smell thousands of distinct smells at a time while humans can only smell hundreds or dozens. For example you might smell stew cooking on the stove but your dog smells carrots, celery, beef, potatoes and all the individual seasonings. So my theory is dogs smell butts to find out what the other dog is eating, and if it is sick or healthy etc. This also helps them decide social hierarchy and how they know which dogs from other packs are leaders or followers by the quality of diet, whether they eat the organs and good parts of the best prey, or the leftover scraps of carrion.

My pooch, Baby, stomps up and down on her bedding with her front paws while circling around prior to laying down. I don’t know why. She also will retrieve my bandana from the table and then lay down with it under her head for a pillow. My other dog, Rat, used to take my wife’s panties from the clothes basket and chew the crotch clean out of them. I couldn’t blame him because I did the same thing except for when I did it she was wearing them. I also had Fly. She would greet me or anyone she knew with a very wide and very large smile that was completely apparent to the eyes and she would wag her nub of a tail at the same time. I really miss Fly and Rat terribly but they had lived life like Riley. I rue the day when it’s time for Baby to go through the pearly gates. My belief about our pets, such as our dogs, is that God takes them before He takes us so they won’t be without us as their caregivers and be left to their own devices or to someone else who doesn’t have the same bond as we do and possibly be neglected. Dogs are miracles with paws. They are as innocent and helpless as babies are. They should be loved and shown that love unconditionally and we can never, ever be angered by them. Sorry for the long rant, but I’m very passionate when it concerns man’s best friend

Dogs have access to an entire world that we are essentially blind to. Most people know how superior their senses of smell and hearing are. Many folks aren't aware of the power of the vomeronasal organ. Look it up. When dogs are sniffing you anywhere, not just your butt, they are gathering all sorts of information about you. Ponder this fascinating fact. A dog's sense of smell is so good, that it gives them a sense of time as well as other information. In other words, not only can a dog tell you've been in the house after you've left, they can tell *how long ago* you were in the house!!

I used to take my dog to the state park for our walks. We would walk on the grass part and it seems there would always be a rotted corpse pressed into the grass. I think the mowers ran over a lot of small animals. Anyway, he would spot it several yards away and it was a chore trying to drag him off of it. He wanted to roll in it and thoroughly cover himself with the awful smell. I never could understand why he wanted to do that so much.

Another reason why dogs lay on their back and expose their tummy is that they are hot and want to cool down. Dogs have a hard time regulating heat because they don't sweat, so this is a way for them to quickly dump built up heat. You will probably notice them doing this after they run around a lot.

Dr. Klinghammer (and now that he's gone, I'd imagine his successors) used to demonstrate scent rolling by wolves at Wolf Park. It's very reproducible. Howl to call them over, spray perfume on the ground, and one of them will roll on it, get up, and then the rest will sniff that one's back. It's saying, here, smell what I found. Of course it's also possible with public demos like this that the animals learn the routine. Dr. Klinghammer said there's nothing hedonic about the behavior, that they'll sniff irritating stuff that makes them sneeze and you'd think would be aversive. Butt sniffing is usually aimed at the perianal sacs, and appears to be a conserved behavior at least in carnivora, because I've seen cats do it too. Besides the reasons given in the video, head tilting seems also to be highly conserved and even more widely distributed, even in humans, as it's recognized as an endearing or flirting gesture. The behavior is not an instinct (a complex nonlearned behavior) in humans, but children learn it quickly because our reaction to it is instinctive.

Another reason i have seen dogs roll around in smelly things is to hide their scent prior to hunting. Sure your average dog living in the suburbs isnt going to find much in the way of prey but i have seen plenty of dogs in rural areas roll in horse & cow poo & then going slinking off into the bush only to return with a rabbit/small prey animal. My dog likes to do it & then bring me back birds (still alive). He is a german wired pointer so its in his genes. It was never a taught trait.

Cats often roll around and probably for a similar reason. One difference I always notice is that cats are often silent and hiding somewhere because that is how they would hunt rodents outside. One thing I like about cats is when they do their business outside they burry it. That is nice because I don't think I ever stepped in cat $hit yet!

Dog's strongest sense is their smell so licking their lips when thing's are happening around them is them smelling out the area or "radaring" their surroundings. When you are making food they are also trying to getter a better smell of what you are making.

well right off they go to saying "might" and "may". The experts are always wanting to be in command, but more often than not they don't really know what motivates dog and cat behavior. Getting to know and communicate with your dog or cat doesn't take the experts. Be around them a lot, interact a lot, be very observant, you'll catch on to how to communicate with each other, even though you may not really understand exactly their body movements and quirks of behavior. It is an eye opening and joyful experience to really, truly get to know your pet(s) on an intimate level.

1:57 Pica is an uncommon disorder in which they may want to eat many things they shouldn't be eating. Dogs naturally like to *chew* on things, and this is not pica. If your dog is chewing on things that may be harmful to them, the best treatment is often to give them official chew toys or other safe things that they will prefer to chew on. This can also help to prevent chewing on furniture or clothing. Eating poop is called coprophagia and it is unrelated to pica. Coprophagia is a common disorder in dogs. It is natural to them to be interested in butts and poop, and so it isn't much of a stretch for them to consider poop to be a treat. I don't know how to deal with it other than keeping the poop away from them and avoiding any face licks, but fortunately the dog isn't in very much danger from coprophagia since a healthy dog's gut microbiome is well-suited to handling fecal matter.

People don't understand or know as much about animals as is touted. I've tested hearing on multiple dogs by whispering their favorite phrases when they're ten yards or so away. I've tried whispers so quiet you can barely tell you're even talking, and regular whispers. Most dogs won't hear you at all until you're talking at a volume you'd reasonably expect to be heard at. They definitely don't hear every little thing around them like some will say. And yeah only certain dogs really have noses as good as we think. Tbh I'm not sure if we just don't actually know as much about animals as is thought, or if us regular people think way more of their abilities than is actually true, but they certainly don't have super senses.
