Hey everyone, a couple points about the video: 1) Of course the ultimate goal of the NFL is to make money. This video explains why Germany of all places has become the next big market for the NFL to expand into. 2) I don't give enough credit in the video to the Pro7 guys like Icke, Esume, and Björn for the work they've done to help grow the game in the recent years. They've been huge. 3) I didn't say Adolf Hitler came to power in 1939, I said "Adolf Hitler came to power, and in 1939...." I know I spoke fast and it sounds jumbled but just wanted to clear that up. 4) American football has become the second most popular sport in Germany in terms of TV viewership, not in general popularity of people playing. I should've finished the sentence.

Question for you NALF. If an NFL team wanted you to play back-up on a team, would you do that rather than play first string in Germany? @NALF (Love your content, you're part of the reason I'm in Berlin right now.)

Hey. ;-) Let Laura explain and Do translate. Greetz..

As to (3): that's why a proper punctuation is so important. It's quite a difference if one says: "A.H. came to power in 1939, he started WWII with the invasion of Poland..." (as you clearly say in the video!),... or if one says: "A.H. came to power. In 1939, he started WWII with the invasion of Poland..." 😉

I live in Connecticut, US and have been a Patriots fan since the beginning. Before Belichick and Brady and all of the winning. I always watch the international games and was really interested to see how this game would be received by the Germans. All I can say is wow! The fans were attentive, seemed to understand the game, and had a great time cheering for their favorites. I didn’t know that the NFL was so popular in Germany but I do now. Germany was a great choice and the fans proved it.

Served in the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany from 1977-1980. It was a very different time then and we were all aware of why we were there, given the history and the bond that existing between our two nations at that time. I visit Germany three to four times a year, the bond and the connection have unfortunately mostly disappeared and the history is seldom spoken about. (Still learning the language actually...ugh!) I was happy and proud to see the NFL in Munich yesterday and glad to see Germans and Americans connect and enjoy themselves. I had a feeling that you would be there enjoying the vibe. Thank you for this video. Most people take it for granted that we have such a relaxed and friendly relation to the US and to our European neighbors. I was thinking about it and talked to my wife about it, when our daughter went to France for a school exchange program. It wasn’t that long ago when German kids were sent to France to join a war. Now, we sent them there for cultural exchange and get to know other people. You really can’t take it for granted. My grandparents couldn’t imagine to watch a NFL game in Munich or being part of an exchange program with France.

I'm french, born in 1960. The veterans and KG (war prisonniers) of my hometown and the one of a small town in the region of Augsburg decided a partnership in early 60 and began a youth exchange every summer. I was part of that exchange each year between 13 and 19. What sweet memories ! Lots of town partnership between France and Germany were also supported by the vets and KG on the 2 sides " if we really know each other, we couldn't fight again".

Yes, if we consider the situation of Germany about 75 years ago, in the late 1940, the relations between Germany on one side and USA, UK, France and Israel in the last 30 years are like a miracle... surely nobody would have imagined this positive developments in e.g. 1948.

How lucky were you to score tickets! We watched it on TV and enjoyed the atmosphere so much! By the way I heard another explanation on why to play "overseas": The Floridian football teams didn't have too many enthusiastic fans, and once they took the plunge and played in London, it was a whole new and exciting experience.

Yeah he had a few things wrong here and there but he tried. The NFL being the biggest league in the world not just the US(Look up its revenue, second place not even close, Premier League who?) Mostly wants to expand to a world wide league lil by lil and get even unimaginably richer so it is planting the seeds now. In a nut shell, this is a better explanation.
@kfletch19
@kfletch19 Жыл бұрын
Ticket sales aren’t as significant as the money from the tv deals. The NFL just signed a $10 billion dollar deal with Amazon prime to broadcast Thursday night games for the next 10 years. They have 4 major tv networks competing to broadcast the games and every time they resign a deal it for ridiculous amounts of money. Only Florida team that doesn’t draw well is the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Bucs usually are close to sell outs each home game.

Your explanation is excellent! German-American friendship is something that is truly enshrined in many communities that have or had American military bases nearby. While I grew up in Nuremberg, there used to be a German-American Friendship Volksfest that I enjoyed quite a lot. My first contact with American icecream, etc. At this point in my life, having followed the NFL for 15 years, I enjoy Football even more than our soccer, and seeing this huge event in Munich on TV was just epic. There's one little thing I might add: Today's popularity of Football in Germany is really thanks to the guys at ProSieben. Coach Esume, Jan Stecker, Icke, Björn Werner and the others have introduced a totally new way of experiencing sports to our TV landscape. Usually, German sports TV is very focused on facts and neutrality and being serious about it. These guys have a lot of knowledge, but they also convey the fun they have and the passion for the sport. Unfortunately, the NFL sold the rights to RTL now, and I'm afraid they will screw it up. RTL may be the largest private channel in Germany, but they are just not as fun as ProSieben.

My grandmother was from Germany and my grandfather was an American in WWII -- they both met in Bavaria after the war ended and she ended up coming back to the states. Neither had ever gone back to Germany since the war, so after she passed we got in touch with some of her family and they invited us to come to their house. So we all flew out, saw where she grew up and her childhood home -- my grandfather was even able to point out the exact lamp post that they kissed under for the first time. It was an amazing yet emotional trip. Then we went to Munich and went to the Hofbrauhaus. My grandfather was expecting old German tradition with the oompah bands and all, but sure enough about 30 minutes into us being there, everyone is standing up with their arms around each other singing Country Roads. To say my grandfather was pissed would be an understatement lol "I travel half way around the globe just to hear John Denver? This is bullshit!" It's so interesting how that song is so ingrained in Germany culture now. I haven't been back to Germany since, but I can't wait to visit again.

Great video, NALF! Triggers so man memories: My 1st ever game was Super Bowl XXV - Giants - Bills 20-19 - will never forget Scott Norwood "wide right" Got invited by a friend to watch it on AFN - they explained me the basic rules so I was able to follow the game - liked it instantaneously 😊 Later this year, Frankfurt Galaxy started - and I saw all games - 1st one on television, all others in the stadium 91 and 92. Season finale against Sacramento Surge had 51.653 spectators - a full Waldstadion at Frankfurt - the Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt averaged 29.816 the same year ... The NFL decided not to fund this anymore - and 1995 came the NFL Europe. Was season ticket holder for most of the seasons - so many memories - seeing Kurt Warner throwing 3 picks against the Galaxy in one game - when Trent Green was injured the following pre-season and they announced Kurt Warner, I was saying "That 3 INT guys from Amsterdam?" 😂 Boy was I wrong. 😃 Now seeing the NFL coming to germany and the fans really "delivered" - awesome thing! I was amongst the 2.930.000 not being able to buy a ticket though ... Reminded me of the great games in Frankfurt with a wild atmosphere - awesome time 😊 I think during the whole WLAF and NFL Europe time, Frankfurt was the only team not losing money ;-) But it did a lot for American Football in germany - I know so many people being active as coaches, or elsewhere in GFL, ELF and all other leagues who most likely wouldn't be there without having the Galaxy in Frankfurt. I know many coaches who walked on and learned a lot from the pro-experienced staffs and that made the football better in Europe, too On a different note that came to my mind during the video - I find it very symbolic that the "Zeppelinfeld" in Nürnberg where once Hitler gathered the masses for his NSDAP party conventions is now used as a playing field for American Football and down on the field playing are multi-cultural teams with every color of skin, nationality and religion playing the American game.

It's definitely time for the NHL to come to Germany as well. I mean we have a German superstar, hockey is a top 3 sport in our country and for example my little town has it's own ice hockey club thanks to the Americans. We even still play in the same stadium they built in 1946. So I don't really know about other places but you kind of brought the hockey culture to Germany (even though there were some hockey clubs before that time) so it would be amazing to have a regular season game here. These friendly games are nice but not as much interesting as a real NHL game.

But we couldn't call it "NFL" here in Germany. It's not "National" but "International". And it's not "Football" but "Gridiron Football". So call it the "IGFL".

I would love to see an nfl game in my hometown Mönchengladbach but i think our 54k stadium might be to small for that.

Just an FYI there was a Monday Night Football game played in Mexico city some time before 1999. Al Michaels and Dan Dierdorf called the game. I think it was the Dallas Cowboys vs somebody I don't remember (San Diego?) It was played at Estadia Azteca and afterwards the players complained about how bad the field was.

I don't think you understand why this guy and many Americans found this beautiful. It has nothing to do with the atmosphere per say. This happens in the U.S all the time. It's the fact that there's a country on a whole other continent that speaks a different language that TRULY enjoys our favorite sport which isn't popular globally at all as other sports. For the English it's nothing more than a fad while the Germans actually have a love for the game. On top of that they sang word for word a song which isn't just any regular song. Country road isn't an anthem, but it damn near could be and basically is for West Virginians.

@@TyonKree Guess the original comment is refering to Bundesliga. 17 teams only existing to make the 18th team German Champions over and over. A playoff-system, combined with a salary cap and a draft-system could make European soccer so much less boring than it is today. And with the NFL you already have that.

I have always thought that Germany was more ready and enthusiastic for American Football than the UK. Ever since the early 90's when the first iteration of NFL Europe, the "World League", it seemed that the German teams had the best following. I'm thrilled to see this happen this year, especially in Munich... my favorite city in the world.
