Roger Bennet of @meninblazers and Tommy Vietor are back for Season 2 of World Corrupt! And this time, Rog and Tommy are diving into how Saudi Arabia, the biggest exporter of oil in the world and a nation in the news for human rights abuses, became the latest geopolitical powerplayer sweeping global soccer. The Saudis have poured billions of dollars into the world’s most popular sport, including signing superstar players like Cristiano Ronaldo to eye-popping contracts. But the crown jewel in the Saudi investment portfolio? That would be the take over of one of England’s most historic football clubs, Newcastle United. A team with a rich history from an impoverished corner of the country, Newcastle had fallen upon hard times…and they welcomed the Saudis with open arms. But at what cost? Watch the first episode of this four part series to find out.

It’s like buying the nightclub where the bouncers wouldn’t let you in… and then wondering why it stops being cool, even though you bought the most expensive DJ.

Tommy and Rog back at it, best news of the week! Season 1 was the most joyful take on a depressing topic I can think of, season 2 cannot be anything else than great.

Idk why Australia didn't bid; the whole country was high on the women's world cup. The govt could’ve said it'd cost any amount, & ppl would've been for it.

Newcastle United supporter here. I stumbled on this podcast because I listen to Pod Save America and I’m so happy. I live in St. Louis in Missouri but I grew up in the northeast of England. This is the perfect podcast for me. Go Magpies! But I’m conflicted about NUFC being bought by the Saudis.

Hopefully they bring up how Saudi is taking over boxing and now trying to get into MMA. They have been putting on massive events that lose tons of money but they literally do not care.

The reason for choosing Newcastle, according to Saudi officials: 1- A historic club that has legends across the country, but its price is acceptable due to its absence of titles. 2- A club that has the entire city as its fans, like Liverpool, not like Manchester and London. Expected result: It will make it easier for the club to return to winning tittles, as it is a team with a legacy that only lacks of modern football money. It will also make it easier for the Saudi owners to develop the entire city and make it one of the main cities in Europe, such as London, Barcelona, Paris, and Amsterdam, which means the possibility of promoting tourism to Saudi Arabia in Europe more easily.

Don’t care what they own, would never visit that place. Their tyrannical monarchy is terrifying, among other issues.

Can you guys have Coco and Nish on?? I don't know if they're big footy fans, though...? And I don't know if footy will be the central story in future episodes, but then they're also just fun to listen to about British politics so there's that.

Great entertainment. Not sure if money in football should be so funny. Cannot wait for the series about Ted Lasso’s running of Chelsea and the Financial Fair Play rulings and how the rich and dodgy avoid relegation or having to sell their best players, sorry Everton you are not rich enough to get away scot-free. I am also looking forward to your series on how Saudi Arabia wins the World Cup in 2034. Is it AI, bars of gold, appointing Mourinho or genetic manipulation having lured the best old footballers to Saudi to steal their DNA.

I'm not allowed to have an opinion on this. As I'm a Sunderland fan, apparently if I say anything against the Saudi government, I'm now just bitter about Newcastle.

You can't buy football. I'm from a smaller country in Europe and we have our own small league that no one else but us watches. It has it's own big teams and small teams and stars of the game. I watch football from all over Europe but i also watch our own league. It's the game itself we like. Not specific clubs or players. You can send every big player to Saudi Arabia and buy all the big clubs. We'll still just watch the smaller leagues and clubs. N big deal.

Sorry, this is so stilted I couldn't even listen. Were Roger and Tommy even on the same zoom call? Because it seems like they're reading lines or having two completely seprate conversations.

It’s very much in the style of men in blazers, and they obviously forced Tommy into their really non-organic way of talking/presenting.

Stilted is the perfect description of how this episode felt to listen to. The first ten or so minutes felt like they introduced the topic three different times, ending it with a "but first." Also, if you're going to let an expert on the show, you should let them talk for more than five words before you add an awkward joke or banter. The first 20 minutes of the show could have taken maybe five and been more thorough. I turned it off after the phrase "glow up."

It amazes me with the closet racisim. When the oligarchs took over clubs we didnt have this.
@KristianaCembre
@KristianaCembre 2 ай бұрын
The complaints were absolutely the same, it’s just at that time the complaints didn’t have the same kind of reach. At that time it was more dependent on mainstream media, and they were paid to shut up by the oligarchs. The Saudi’s also try and pay off the media, but you can’t pay off everyone who has a podcast, or a social media account. So the complaints get more of a reach…doesn’t let stop them buying everything though, and it sure as hell hasn’t encouraged them to improve their human rights violations. So it’s irrelevant either way.
@basicallyno1722

Closet racism 🙄 people complained just about the same when oligarchs were buying up F1 teams, historic wineries, etc. if Morocco was buying a club, I wouldn’t care. Saudi Arabia is known for their egregious human rights violations, violent censorship and many other issues. With that aside, rich losers who have no class or distinction of quality ruin everything - doesn’t matter if the losers on question are saudia arabian or Russian…
