Asking for advice and having a mentor are two different things. And thinking either one is a bad thing is stupid.

My mentor never provides me with answers, he would only ever provide a different way of thinking, a different perspective. I think everybody can grow from that.

People didn't get his message. He learn from everyone by always listening then he does his own conclusion. That way everyone becomes a mentor. Business results changes depending on personal skills and many other circumstances. Someone else success in the past doesnt mean it will apply to you today.

I'm with Mark, mentorship has never been appealing to me. I'm an avid self-educator, so I'm always learning, and great majority of the time, I figure things out.

A mentor is just someone with more experience, with whom you get along, and can help you avoid the mistakes others have made. They can also act as a sounding board and motivation. Mark Cuban may not have had an official mentor, but he's had parents, friends, business partners, advisors, investors - people who gave him advice on how to succeed.

Mentors are meant to point you in the right direction, not micromanage your every move/thought

Have a goal. Start. Don’t stop when it gets hard. And keep fighting to get better. No one has the answers. You have to just find them yourself.

Most of them either dropped out of school or resigned from work, they love doing things their own way, no teacher, no boss, no mentor. They are the kind that would say you can't teach me a thing because you ain't who I want to become. 😂😂😂

in my opinion, having a mentor accelerates learning specific skills. they'll help you not to make mistakes they've done before.

My takeaway is that there's nothing wrong with mentorship. It's just not something Mark subscribes to given his personality. It's like different routes to the same goal. Either way, it's about learning from first-hand and/or second-hand experience and applying it to your own path. Application is key.

Mentor is everyone who responds those questions you didn't know you have to ask or might inspire you to do something you wouldn't plan on your own. Your current mentor could be a good book, someone on the street, your old teacher's memories, a celebrity on TV. However, it truly helps when someone takes their time to give you from what they have.

The best mentor I found in my life is failure. It’s about picking up yourself after and KEEP GOING. Every single fucking time.

Sometimes, I don't think that Cuban believes the things he says in public. I once heard him say that connections are not that important in business and that it's ALL about hard work. Yes, hard work is definitely necessary, but to dismiss connections is nonsense. And I think he knows it. Same with what he is saying here about mentors.

A mentor is never a bad thing. Its why rich families stay rich. They pass the knowledge down to their kids. Sure you can go in blind and it can work out, but its even easier for things to go terribly simply due to ignorance.

Hes not cocky. Thats just a "get it done" attitude. Straight forward, get to the point. Thats a strong mindset, however, he knows he needs those opposite him to balance him out, so he is aware of himself.

I feel sad that even though I am investing, I don't have the brain power to dig through how each company is doing, is this a good time to buy stocks or not. my reserve of $450k is still laying waste to inflation and I don't know what to do at this point.. I need solid data on market trajectory..

At the end of the day, you do what works for you. You're going to hear contrasting, conflicting ideas at both extremes, and you cannot differentiate which one is guaranteed to work for you. You do what works for you, everybody has different roads.

This makes sense to me, because it’s not that you aren’t gleaning from someone else’s wisdom or experience, you are by listening, watching, attending conferences, reading etc... but not everyone (myself included) needs someone to follow daily. I take advice from people that don’t even realize they’re giving me, I’m always after growth and wisdom I can apply to my life, I just get it different ways. Some say this is mentorship from a distance, others say it isn’t at all.

I'm 35, 14 years in. Business is a battlefield. I never realized it at the time but I had two mentors that built me. These were brutal, kind hearted men. I'm absolutely appreciative of my ruthless work ethic instilled into me. I wouldn't have had the courage to continue down the gnarly path of entrepreneurship without it. I surpassed both their wealth eleven years ago and I'm only just getting started as an actual professional. A specialist in my industry. Thank God and god bless the wealthy.

Mentorship isn't for everyone, especially if you have a huge ego that you are not willing to give up or if you are looking for a cheat sheet. I've been hustling all my life, building businesses, and diving into different industries from restaurants, golf tech to health tech... I never thought I needed a mentor because I always tried to figure it out on my own and learn from everyone I could. A few years ago, I encountered a mentor who's shared very similar views and I felt that he's built his business in better ways than I could ever imagine. I used to have a huge ego but I knew that may be the pivotal point to take a step back to listen and observe for once. So I decided to take a pause on my entrepreneurship endeavor and joined his team. It's been quite a deep roller coaster ride so far, breaking through my old self for new growth...it's not easy but that makes it even more of a rewarding experience. I do not have the same answers as my mentor does, but I can understand and respect them. I have a new set of answers of my own... and this whole experience allowed me to open my mind to find them. My own, customized answers that makes sense for me. Mentorship isn't about seeking for answers. It's about your ability and willingness to embrace a new way of looking at things through the mind of someone who's already been there.

Well, when you define a mentor as someone who tells you what to do, then certainly that's a problem! You need to seek mentors who challenge you and make you think deeply in ways that aren't natural to your style.

I agree w Mark. If someone is there to advise, listen. If not, don’t wait around and make your own decisions.

Not to mention.... there are a lot of mentors who are just pretenders. Mentorship is a business.

I think mentorship doesn’t need to be a long-term relationship. We can learn so much from everyone we come across!

I totally agree with him. This attitude is not for the weak. He simply didn’t water it down. It’s totally true.

He points it for someone who wants to start a business and looking for a Mentor. He’s not saying don’t listen to other people’s advice or seek knowledge. The message is work hard and rely on yourself, teachers will come if you figure something out.

He is egoistic but seems a genuine person, albeit wrong when he sends a message that mentors are not needed, though not intentionally.

Mentorship is how human have always learned. You learn from someone who is experienced. Self-made person is only there due to the opportunities and ties the person have and of his/her value. The moment those people around stop valuing you or choose not to value you. You no longer have the power. There is no real *self-made*,it is an arrogance.

Mentorship is about learning what you don't know from people who have done it before you so you can go out and implement it. It's about time collapsing. Getting where you are to where you want to be in the shortest amount of time. The key is the mentor isn't a friend or family member giving you advice all the while having done nothing to improve their own life, but people who have actually become successful in the endeavors

I like what he said at the end of the clip about how it really comes down to Effort and Ability. A mentor or advisor can't necessarily teach you that, especially the effort part.

I try to always hold both of these truths in my mind at all times: 1. Everyone, and I mean *everyone* is my teacher 2. I have something unique to offer everywhere I go It works pretty well for me. But there's more than one right way to be successful (as well as more than one right way to define success).

When I came here as an immigrant at the age of one I thought everyone was way better than me. I was shy to ask people for help I thought I needed to to learn and get dirty with it myself. Now at 22 with a dealership and a car detailing business that are young businesses with failures on the way but have made my life way better and still killing it!

I had good mentors and I had horrible mentors. My good mentors really helped me.

Getting a mentor who is genuinely experienced works wonders. Steve Jobs had a mentor (need citation), he was a mentor to Mark Zuckerberg. However getting "mentors" that sell 98$ courses on get rich in 67 steps is where you draw the line.

My mentor saved me from making mistakes and thinking about things differently. However I waited too long to start my business because I thought I need to know things that didn’t matter like I know my business extremely well but I was worried about stupid things like creating an LLC, how to pay myself and stupid stuff like that. I was more than capable of starting my business 10+ years ago and if I did I would have multiple locations by now and could be working from home.

I used to think you could have one mentor but later realized that there’s no limit. I have a few, Jim Rohn, Tony R., Rich Froning, Brandon Turner... Michael Jordan had coaches and his father for mentors. If you’ve ever been inspired by a book and utilized the info then the author is somewhat your mentor.

Dear everyone in the comment section going 'yeah, he's just saying this because.....'. Look for all the cockiness, the guy took good advice. He just chose not to FOLLOW a person because of that advice. That's why he doesn't believe in an all guiding mentor. He obviously learnt skills from others. But that doesn't make the other person a mentor. A mentor is that ONE person you lean on every time you're stuck. But like he said, in tech, even the people who invent things don't know what it may be used for or valued like by society. So it's every man for himself.

And coachability is overrated too, the way people think of mentorship as well is definitely overrated.

I see people knocking mentorship when guys like Warren Buffet still have mentors to this day. Arguably one of the richest men on the planet has people that still give him advice. Let that sink in. There’s more than one way to accomplish a goal. Everyone’s situation is unique, that’s what makes all these successful people fascinating to listen to. Imagine how boring it’d be if we had a world full of Mark Cubans.

If I hire a mentor it’s not to avoid failing , it’s to see the little things that will matter in the end and to see the little things that they did that will make a difference , it’s how you use everything, you can dribble a basketball, fail and try to cross the court again , or learn how to do tricks and moves to help you get there faster , it’s all about the little things , you need to fail in order to feel succesfuo

The world is filled with young people that need mentors. It is also filled with good, knowledgeable people that won’t go out of their way to mentor someone. Matching them up is a chance close to 0.

The best mentors are not the ones who have experienced huge successes. It is those who have failed or experienced very little successes. They tend to be the best mentors because 1 they want to prove themselves and be part of something great that you are building 2 they have made mistakes that could save you and 3 they have the time because not many people ask them for advice.
