I feel like Gwen's death is one of the only deaths in comic book history that actually holds any weight. It showed for the first time ever how being a Superhero isn't only dangerous for the hero themselves, but their loved ones also. And how careful they have to be with hiding their identity leading a duel life.

Death of Gwen Stacy once again shows, that if you had superpowers in real life, your life isn't all gonna be fun. Just like what Spidey's origin showed. You need to be responsible, you need to make the choices where you have to lose people for doing the right thing. I don't find anything like that in other superheroes except Spider-Man. Spider-Man was the first superhero who felt REAL to me. Who actually felt like a human being, instead of a perfect man with a perfect life. He is the person who gives you an idea, what would your life be like if you actually had superpowers. Be glad, you don't have any superpowers lol.

@@MetalMadness_00 Look I get what you're saying, because I too loved Amazing #400, and thought John Byrne's retcon of that was stupid beyond comparison. But honestly, Aunt May's death wouldn't have the same shock and impact of Gwen. When you see the cover, the first choice of "Who is going to die" is Aunt May. So naturally Conway and Romita thought of her first. But then they realized how much more tragic it would be if Gwen died. And in the 70's dead used to mean DEAD. There were very few resurrections done (the only one I can think of from that time was Captain America in the 60's), and it showcases the tragedy of being a superhero. It also made the comic feel closer to home, because people die in the real world, and it gives it more stakes. Especially at the time, certain characters were off limits. The superhero's girlfriend would never be in real danger. The only time they would ever die is for an origin story. Usually, they would be put in some artificial danger created for the hero to rescue them. Thats what for most of Amazing #121 it looked like. Obviously it was a bit more because the Green Goblin was back and at the time, he was in a completely separate class from every other villain. But still, that scene looked like Spider-Man would get the heroic saving his girlfriend scene. The shock at the end was the snap put in by John Romita, and when he pulls her up she's dead. This gives actual stakes to the characters for a while, because now you know, anyone can die in the comic. Although nowadays with the way modern editorial editorial is, its pretty predictable what they'll do.

It basically was the same problem writters had with Spiderman since the 70s; they just cant let Peter grow up. I remember in an interview both Stan and Romita Sr said their idea was for Peter to marry Gwen, but both readers and Marvel were against it, Peter needed to be single and live with his aunt again...the easiest solution? Kill Gwen and Norman (who was paying for Peter and Harry apartment) at the same time. Kinda sad how every number of years Marvel FORCES the character to go back to the status quo, we saw it 45 years after this with the infamous "One More Day". Peter has to remain a forever manchild in his 20s, single, and living with his aunt, no matter how much writters try to move the character forward (like JMS did), Marvel will always order for him to go back to the status quo after a few years.

@@thespider8654 The problem with that statement is that may have used to be true, but now thats just the excuse the executives and editorial use to justify their stupid decisions, stating the idea of immature fans. And they use that as an excuse to attack fans online who question their decisions. This was at its height under Bendis. Luckily, Bendis is gone, but Marvel especially still has to recover from their years of stupidity. Like Mark Waid attacked one fan for tweeting to him that he respects that he can write but he want, but didn't like the story. Waid responded by calling him all sorts of stereotypes and names including fans not being able to accept things. Quesada used the same fan excuse for One More Day, in which Marvel editorial and Quesada were the stupid ones for forcing JMS to write the story, the fans were the ones rightfully enraged at the erasing of 20 years of development so that Quesada could have his vision of a single young Spider-Man and name new characters after his family members. So no, Marvel Editorial is the one that never allows writers to take risks and resets the Status Quo. Clone Saga, One More Day, the Plane Crash, etc. All of these were mandated by the editorial and hated by fans, so don't tell me that its all the fans fault cuz thats just bs. And yes I acknowledge that there are some fans that are ridiculously and unreasonably pissed over stuff, like they were with Slott in Superior Spider-Man, but thats usually temporary, or just a small portion of people that give fans a bad reputation. And those kind of people are in literally any fandom of anything. There's a difference between acknowledging and addressing politics in comics, and shoving in messages to fit an agenda. For decades, comics were made to reflect social and political issues. Superman was created as a symbol of hope for oppressed Jews and Apocalypse was Nazi Germany. Captain America was created as basically a what if for WWII. Spider-Man was created to represent the struggles of the everyman. But note, it was addressing issues and taking them into account, NOT clearly being used as a medium to influence readers political opinions. Marvel NOW!, All-New, All-Different Marvel, and Marvel Legacy all were times when Marvel basically started promoting Social Justice messages into many of their books, and many of the ideas of the progressives. And I'll try to keep politics out of this as much as I can, but sadly, in the 2010's editorial's main goal was no longer to tell stories about the characters, it was to send political messages specifically created to change peoples opinions. This has gotten better since the Fresh Start relaunch and Bendis leaving, bu the damage has been done. So fans are understandably pissed at being forced to read material that basically no longer cares about its characters, just about political messaging, which is why comics have decreased in popularity. Of course, editorial will say its because of immature fans, though. When people say they don't want politics in comics, they mean they dont want political messaging. So no, I would say nowadays, people dont hate comics because of immature fans, its because of stupid decisions made by the editorial, who are the immature and irresponsible ones that restrict the writers.

Peter and Gwen were as close to the perfect relationship as he could have. Perfect isn’t necessarily boring. If you wanted to keep him on a teen mode then what better way to do it than to have two woman constantly trying to win him over or getting so frustrated they threatened to leave him all together and that is his turmoil as Peter Parker post teen years.

@@chancegoode173 Its funny how so many people misinterpret this. Gwen used to be an interesting character, but over the last 30 issues had gotten very one note and boring. They tried inserting drama by having her blame Spider-Man for her father's death, but then she forgave Spider-man a few issues later after seeing his heroics in London (which Dan Slott clearly doesn't remember). Then the only thing interesting about her was that she loved Peter. All the personality from back in ASM #31-66 was gone. So Gwen wasn't really an interesting character. Fans didn't hate her, but MJ was definitely way more interesting. So perfect and gotten boring because it didn't really add much to Spider-Man at all.

This was similar to the death of Jason Todd the 2nd Robin, fans were furious and the irony here was that the fans were the ones that decided his fate, in either of these story lines the public reception/backlash was not due to bad story telling but to the fact that, much like Jason Todd, Gwen's death HURTS and it does till this day, like the death of other literary figures like Romeo and Juliet, the public fell in love with Gwen much like Peter did, so when she died we felt Peter's pain, and I think it was an analogy that the first love for more perfect that it may be never lasts and you need to move on and grow up even thoug it's also true you will never forget.

I would love to see a video about Mary Jane. I love her initial writing as the party girl, the “Veronica” to Gwen’s “Betty” and how her growth began even before Gwen’s death (her reaction to Harry’s drug-fueled attitude showed the limits to her party ways), her choice to stay behind and console Peter instead of heeding his sorrow-fueled jabs, and her subsequent feelings becoming more than friends. I love when she decides she doesn’t want to settle down and leaves temporarily, permitting Peter to be free to try other relationships, including the very unique (for Spider-Man) situation of the Black Cat, who fell in love with the adventurous Spider-Man but despised the plain Peter, and Mary Jane’s return in the early 80s flipped the script, putting her in as the more plain one compared to the wild Felicia Hardy. And the mid-80s retcon/revelation that she knew of Peter’s secret as far back as the events of Amazing Fantasy 15 was such a genius move that actually reinterpreted and strengthened her character, showing that her airhead party girl persona had alway been an act to protect her from personal tragedy all around her, how May’s insistence on hooking them up had been because of how much they had in common, and how he was helping her become a better person as much as she was helping him. It all worked so well, and is still one of the greatest relationships in comics history, even if Marvel doesn’t know what to do with it sometime (even I admit I hate how the Raimi movies and the PS4 game refused to really give us true MJ). Anyrate, love your work, and look forward to more!

As time's gone on and I've learned more about it, I've grown to appreciate how important the story is to Spider-Man as a character and to comics as a whole, and I can appreciate just what Conway, Romita, and Thomas did and were able to accomplish. And as you point out in your closing, Gwen's character has managed to live on in the subsequent decades through constant tributes and re-interpretations, and I think the enduring legacy of both her character and this storyline are really something special.

I only read these comics in those "Essential" collections decades after the events. But even then this story shocked me. It was a major turn for the world and vibe of the comic I've been reading and I loved it. The suddenness of the death, the follow up fight and death with GG. It was really well done and impactful. While maybe a bit cheesy in some aspects looking at it now it has still stood with me even having only read it once. Even with the plethora of "dark" stories I've read in comics since then, there's something about the dichotomous nature of the fun almost consequence free Spiderman stories right before it and this one that hits hard. Especially with so many issues building up the relationship btw Peter and Gwen but also Spiderman and GG. The character motivations and reactions all made sense and it didn't dwell too long on any aspect to make it too melodramatic.

Easy. The death of Gwen was meaningful, was narratively sound, they treated all characters involved with respect, and the death had a profound impact on the story of Spider-Man as a whole, both in the short and the long term. DeWit's death was all shock value and little else. That's why the trope is called "Stuffed in the Fridge", and not "Dropped from a Bridge".

@@XanderVJ I'd argue the main reason Gwen is remembered different is just.... her death was the first time that sort of trope was done in comics, so of course its remembered as a more impactful moment and less so a "geez comic books treat females like shit" moment. In reality I'd argue Dewits death had a much bigger impact on Kyle than Gwens death did on Peter really. Alex's death was essentially more akin to Kyle's uncle ben, her death is what signifies when he stopped treating the entire situation like a game and actually had character growth. This is even directly called back to multiple times where Kyle laments on the fact he continues to be a hero because he knows its what Alex would tell him is the right thing to do, and that it was her talks with him and her encouragement that led to him developing the way he did. To call her death "shock value and little else" is just a blatant lie, the only thing about it that was for the sake of shock value was how gruesome it was, which granted, is probably the worst part about it and why its fair to criticize it somewhat but in the end, to say her death wasn't planned or was just there for shock value is silly, its clearly meant to be the turning point for Kyle as a character, the people who created him have even compared him to spiderman before so that's clearly what they were going for. Meanwhile, Gwen was killed off because everyone knew Mary Jane was going to be Peters real girlfriend in the long run and as a result, she was expendable. The entire thing came from an order to "shake up the status quo" so if anything, its that story that's shock value and little else. I'd even argue that Alex had more agency in her death than Gwen did, as the entire reason why she was killed was because she resisted Major force and refused to tell him where Kyle was, her last act was her trying to selflessly protect Kyle, while to my knowledge, Gwen is just kidnapped and killed. In the end Gwen's death just had the luxury of being remembered as an example of "when comic books grew up" because of it being one of the first times a comic dared to do something like this, rather than what it really was, which was the exact trope that people claimed Alex's death was. Combine that with the negative reception Kyle got from the get go due to him replacing Hal Jordan, the fact they for decided to make Alex's death stupidly brutal and the TWENTY year gap between the two comics, yeah its no wonder why Alex's death is remembered less fondly. So to close, it probably should be called "Dropped from a bridge".

There was a problem with Gwen going back to when Gwen's dad died, and Gwen blamed Spider-man for it. This was done while Stan was still the writer, so he couldn't pass the blame. If Pete was ever going to take his relationship with Gwen to the next level, he was going to have to tell her his secret identity. So readers at the time were anticipating the story line that revolved around how Gwen would react to learning Pete was Spider-man. But we never got to see that, the entire encounter with the Green Goblin isn't shown, and she never regains consciousness. I was a kid when this issue came out. When I saw the cover, I went straight to the last page, I could not read this issue like a normal comic and I had to know now who was going to die. Back in those days I used to buy 2 copies, one to read, one to save. The copy that was saved was bagged and boarded since it's purchase. I recently had it graded by CGC, it came back 7.5. Kinda disappointing seeing as how I rarely handled it, but it has been 40 yrs.

well i disagree with some of this. MJ and Peter really only dated a couple times before he went into a long relationship with Gwen. secondly, MJ in those years was strictly a party girl. She wasn't particularly deep. Gwen had a lot more in common with Peter.

Great vid. I love the significance and impact this storyline has on Spider-Man, the character and the franchise. I love how it led to Mary Jane’s growth and the Clone Sagas of the 70s and the 90s, and how it took the industry out of the Silver Age. I even like how the Goblin was kicked up a notch into a serious threat, and by shelving Norman for a couple of decades, it elevated his status, did away with that cop-out “amnesia” nonsense that diluted Norman’s real threat even outside the Goblin costume (he was the prototypical “evil businessman” archetype of the 1980s all the way back in the 1960s), and when he was revealed as the 90s Clone Saga mastermind, I actually celebrated this revelation, and it didn’t dilute the impact of ASM 121-122 at all for me.

If Gwen was just the runner-up why did she have to die in order for MJ to become Peter's wife? Wouldn't Peter Parker have married MJ eventually if that was what "destiny" had in store? Then there's Felicia Hardy/Blackcat who complicates things further. Felicia Hardy/Blackcat is to Peter Parker/Spider-Man what Selena Kyle/Catwoman is to Bruce Wayne/Batman. An interesting parallel between Marvel and DC. That's one reason I wish Sony had finished the Amazing Spider-Man trilogy. Felicia showed up in Amazing Spider-Man 2. A third movie with Blackcat and Spider-Man would have been cool.

This storyline, while important for it's time, lost its sting in the wake of Green Goblin returning. The whole point was the closing of a chapter of Spider Man. Which was defeated by the ressurection of Norman Osborn. And to be honest, it was a lazy way to write off her character. That said, she should've been brought back ages ago. It's ridiculous to have all these knock offs running around, but keep the real deal in the grave.

Freeze-framing that letter at 11:40 is an interesting read (although it doesn't mention Gwen). What strikes me about it is how literate and nuanced the writers are. Compare that to Twitter-storms today, reinforcing the point that it's basically impossible to say anything intelligent in 100-200 characters. Social media with its instant gratification, and especially Twitter with its character limit, positively discourages people from thinking and re-reading what they say before they send it, and doesn't leave room for people to qualify their statements. Edit: Well, I say that, then I see the two comments at 12:00 ("Your rattlesnake!" etc). I guess I spoke too soon - that's impulse posting on social media for you!

7:20 - 8:00: Close, but not exactly true. The events you're describing, 1. happened over 7 years of publishing not right after each other, and 2. Harry never found out Norman was the Goblin until the night he died, because in Amazing Spider-Man #122, Peter is standing over Norman's dead body, and he reflects on how empty he is and walks away. But there is a mysterious shrouded figure that we see watching this. This figure watches over the fallout of this the next few issues, and took off the Goblin's costume, finding out that he is Norman Osborn. Realizing this, the mysterious figure stole the costume so nobody would know that Norman Osborn was the Green Goblin. This mysterious figure is later revealed to be Harry. Then the Clone Saga retcon said that Harry also bribed the people in the morgue so they wouldn't perform an autopsy on Norman and that Norman saw all this because he was actually alive.

I personally was interested in seeing how a more mature Peter Parker will handle his issues. As much crap as it gets, that’s one of the reasons why the old 1970s live action show remains a guilty pleasure for me. We get to see an older Peter Parker deal with adult problems. Everyone wants to see the young Peter and wow that’s fine, eventually he hast to grow up. I find that writer that want to keep them in there to be very shortsighted and quite frankly just lazy.
