What are some of the "Real Reasons" why monitor calibration with a Spyder 5 Pro may be something you should look into.
We always hear how important color is. But how do we get uniform color from all the monitors we use? There is a standard called ICC, think of it in terms of an inch on a ruler. An inch is a standard of length and the ICC profile is a standard for color management.
In order to make sure you have the same color from your laptop, to desktop to third monitors you need to calibrate. Remember though, when you share images with others who don't have a calibrated monitor there's not much you can do at that point.
When you go to make prints you can install the ICC profiles from the lab so you can soft proof and check what the final output should look like. It's about a uniform standard and keeping your monitors up to date with it.
The Spyder 5 PRO was extremely easy to set up, follow the prompts hit go, let it do it's thing then see the results. On my Retina Display Macbook Pro I saw a subtle change from calibrated to not. What you have to keep in mind is as your monitors get older the color starts to shift along with the output brightness. That's why it's recommended that you calibrate once a month or more. I know people who do it before every single shoot.

Hi, I have a question. I have the same callibrator spyder 5 pro I think, but I have a problem. 2 screens callibrated with the same device do not have identical colors. (You should try to put them side by side, that is first when you notice it) a folow upp problem to this is sRGB and adobeRGB screen do not match in any way (after callibration). I actually have my adobeRGB screen disconnected and replaced with a less then half price sRGB monitor because the colors I see on it can not be matched with anything at all, no other screen, no printers and no webbrowsers. I even tried ~20 ways to convert from adobeRGB to sRGB and the colors always turn out random (best case atleast 5-10% deviation) 5% does not sound like much, but when skintones turn red or green or yellow just "5%" noone is really happy about it.

Why do calibrators use Cinema mode? I find it has a yellow tint to it? I like using standard mode because the colors dont look like they have a filter added on to it.

Hugh Jazz Hi Hugh, there is a good chance that whatever "movie mode" you are refering to has too little blue in its grayscale, giving the black and white image under the color a yellowish tinge to it. This is what calibration can fix, among other things.
@kevindiossi

Calibration will adjust to true color. Your perception of shifted colors will be influenced by the color in your work environment. Change the temperature of lights in the room and your eyes will be tricked into seeing colors on the screen differently. Make a print and you'll find true colors as well.

I bought the colormunki about 6 months ago. It has saved my life. I don't know what I did before I properly calibrated my monitor. Now all my photos are consistent and what is see on my monitor is closer to what the print will look like. Sometimes I would get my prints back and not know why the colors were so off. one of the best investments I've made. I re-calibrate every time I sit down to edit.

Jared, in RAWTalk 145 during your interview with Trey Ratcliff, he was talking about how people can get too hooked up on some of the tecnicalities of photography. He specifically pointed out monitor calibration and you responded that your monitor had never been calibrated. (1:06:00). Have you had a change of mind?
@TalesOfWar
@TalesOfWar 8 жыл бұрын
+CompetaJohn I don't think he dismissed it, he just said he'd never done it. As he said though, if you do prints or work with others etc then it's good to know what you're sending is accurate to life (or as accurate as your monitor/GPU lets it be).
@CompetaJohn
@CompetaJohn 8 жыл бұрын
+TalesOfWar If you watch the interview carefully you will see a wry smile as he states, "I have never calibrated my monitor." If it is important for printing, working on different monitors etc., why was it not important when RAWTalk 145 was uploaded? I would just like to know what has changed his opinion and why?

+CompetaJohn monitors generally come calibrated to a certain percentage or sRGB if you want 100% sRGB or even a high AdobeRGB calibration then you either have to buy a monitor that is calibrated to that spec with a certificate stating so, or you have to calibrate it yourself. I'm not sure what the stock calibration is on an iMac retina screen but it may have been calibrated from the factory and not needed it.

BlahBlahMoose You can't calibrate a monitor to a given colour space, it has to be supported at the hardware level of the display itself and the GPU and OS driving it need to support it too.

I have a Spyder 4 Pro, but the wizard is absurdly confusing. It telling me if I have contrast button, brightness, single channel controls and temp switches. Then at the end it just tells me to set at 5800 with an absurdly low brightness, without telling me at the end if I should raise my brightness and it leave somewhat a blue cast. Is it a limitation of the pro version or there's something I don't understand?

Hey Jared! Great vid!!! I do have a problem btw! My photos look washed-out/unsaturated when I transfer them from my MacBook Pro to any iOS mobile devices (iPhone, iPad etc.). I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHY! I have always been exporting my photos in sRGB color space and JPEG format. I went online and many people have the EXACT same issue but their problem was solved when they converted their photos to sRGB! (Because they probably exported in ProPhoto or Adobe RGB). Mine still remains unsaturated when viewed on my iPhone/iPad screen!

This way of calibrating monitors seems useful as long as you are sure you are always in the optimum viewing angle for the screen. Colors, saturation and brightness tend to change with viewing angle, so if two monitors are in a slightly different position with respect to the viewer, they may be calibrated, but the viewer sees difference.

Color degradation is not a big issue with modern LCD monitors. With CRT's you had to calibrate them every month or so, cause those tended to drift, but with an LCD (especially LED backlit ones), you calibrate once and you're good to go for a couple of years.

That kind of calibration is a software one which means that the corrections are beeing made in graphic card's LUT. For professional use I recommend using hardware calibration istruments like i1 Display Pro and hardware calibrated monitors like Eizo Color Edge series. Hardware calibration applies corrections to monitor's electronics and it's much more accurate and precise.
@Kaakao
@Kaakao 8 жыл бұрын
+Piotr Dejneka - Fotograf The i1 Display Pro does like exactly the same thing as the Spyder 5. You usually can't change any settings on the display panel on laptops. With an external monitor you can also set custom RGB levels / brightness / contrast during the calibration process. The Eizo does the same thing, just automatically as the sensor is built into the monitor and is able to change the internal settings of the monitor too.

A huge part on why these are so important is will build a color conversion in the ICC profile almost like a LUT in case your colors aren't accurate and it will also adjust your monitor brightness because consumer monitors are being made too bright nowadays.

+Dominik Hlaváčik That's not exactly the best advice. Some monitors are default set to a "display" setting or something way brighter/more saturated than is good for accurate color and tones. If you absolutely can't get a calibration device at least see if your monitor has a default "RGB" setting or "neutral" setting. There are a lot of different things from different manufacturers. Honestly though you can use something like a used Spyder that doesn't have to be the latest version. You don't need the latest Spyder 5 or whatever. I have a Spyder 3. They all basically do the same thing for general sRGB monitor calibration.

Note that a calibrator like the spyder can't always match any monitor to any other monitor. This is because the actual color capabilities of any two random monitors will likely not overlap 100%. A good monitor will be able to produce the same colors for a 'greatest common denominator' of color. In the case of two good monitors there will be enough overlap to not be a problem. Preferably that overlap would then be Adobe RGB or the older and less capable SRGB. With the profile the system can also work out the optimal conversions needed to display the colors as close as possible to what they theoretically should be (assuming an accurate camera profile was used in the first place).
@rogerbreton6412
@rogerbreton6412 7 жыл бұрын
On strict colorimetric ground, any instrument can "match any monitor to any monitor". That is the naked truth. But how do these numbers translate visually? Different monitor makes, different LCDs, LEDs, colorants, spectras... All hell break loose.

i think calibration is only necessary if you or your customer want to print your work. if you just spread your work digital it is just for the good feeling, but you have no control how the other person's monitor is showing your picture.

+heinz meins well, there are standards out there, like the sRGB. Sure not all monitors are equally calibrated, and there will be differences, but I'd like to think that they're still trying to aim for the same thing/standard. Unless the 3rd party viewer (customer or someone else viewing the picture) monitor is totally off the scale, it would be very good idea for the photographer to have his monitor as-close-to calibrated level as possible, since I assume the other monitors are trying to get into same sRGB , even if somewhat different results depending on the monitors. They aren't completely off the charts unless the user has been twidling with the settings alot. My monitor has a sRGB mode I can select, but I'm sure selecting that mode alone wont be as effective as doing a proper calibration. Regardless, it's probably still better than nothing, as the said sRGB mode restricts any changes in brightness/contrast or color levels, it's been selected in factory.

have you tried turning off your workspace lights. I have the most reflective 4K monitor on the planet (Monoprice) and it calibrated it correctly.

Cesar Camacho of course I tried everything and it didnt work. I also calibrated my monitor in the dark. Same story. Macs are not really good monitors for photography if we want to print. The best idea is to by designed monitor like eizo or nec

Normally the soft that comes with almost all calibrators is not very good (I have a colormunki smile, and their software is pure garbage), I really recommend DispCAL, is opensource and have a lot of presets to use (sRGB, Prepress, Softproof, Web, Office, Photo, Videos), and helps you setting the white point on your monitor (if you have RGB manual controls), option to change the tone curve, white point, black level compensation (and white), very big testcharts to get maximum accuracy, takes you some time to get use to that amount of options, but its worth it

Everybody keeps forgetting to inform viewers that you can only calibrate premium quality monitors. If you have just standard generic cheap less than $300 screen - it will never get calibrated to display correct colors and I believe thats important.

Photoshop actually has two color-blindness proofing modes, one for protanopia, and one for deuteranopia, so you can compensate all your images for your particular eyes. This won't work as well as it could without calibrating your monitors first.

Not just to match your computers. Even if you have one, you don't want to be making color adjustments on a screen that is incorrect.

The color calibrator is useful basically only for two situations. 1) You do prints. so you softproof the image before spending $2-50 per print. So you get quickly a correct printing out as it was on screen. (this is the essential reason) 2) You have multiple devices that you want to use to watch your photographs and can be color calibrated (accepts color profiles, like televisions don't if not connected to computer). (This is lousy reason to own it but if having multiple computers...) And then comes the bonus round: 3) To see more accurately (like in 90% accuracy) what others who have calibrated their displays, show in their Flickr page etc. But the third one doesn't really work as most doesn't have a calibration tool. Most doesn't have a color calibrated workstation but work in outdoors or in normal room with normal lighting. So the benefits are like non-existing for online use or to view others work, limited for itself when having multiple computers, but essential and really REALLY required when doing printing, unless wanted to get random prints or first order some small samples and then adjust images based the small sample in hand. Point is, No one should expect that others work is done with same calibration conditions, or that calibration is magic that fix all the photos if your editing environment is not calibrated. And no, the calibrator lighting sensor on it doesn't fix a thing. It helps a lot when sun rises at morning and warms up your room, then at middle day it is again different color and when sun goes down and room artificial lights starts casting more and more the green/magenta then it compensates to that. But look like Capture One, Lightroom etc. they are colored neutral as much as possible. because middle gray (18%) or darker gray (64-96/128) allows to see the colors in editing better. But then people have a bright colored wallpaper, table, reflective display that cast colors from room etc. And all those things ruins the color reception, it is like flashlight at night ruining your night vision.

Never use a Spyder meter for color calibration. Spyders are not as accurate as an X-Rite i1Display. Only use an X-Rite i1Display Pro Plus colorimeter.
