We all know that Al Green had grits thrown on him. But what do you know about the woman who threw the grits? Did you know that she committed suicide....that same night? Well, that is the story that was running in newspapers decades ago. Do you believe it? Or do you believe that something more sinister happened? Does hearing about Al Green's abusive past with women sway your opinion about the situation?
Enjoy this Ti Said What Ti Said video and draw your own conclusion.
Thank you for watching!

Those entertainers showed one face to their public & fans, and another after the final curtain call. None of surprises me, but as a young girl it did, because in that mindset, u want to believe that there's good in everyone, especially if ur a fan. Over time, I certainly find out different. I used to hear my parents talk abt the old school entertainers of the day, and was shocked to find out it was the truth....like Rock Hudson.....and I had to humble myself to my mother to tell her she was right, after it was revealed he had aids. At 61, nothing surprises me anymore.

My parents told me Al shot her after she burned him. I also heard he was at the dinner table eating when she dumped the grits in his lap... he supposedly cheated on her. He felt guilty about killing her and abusing her so he became a Preacher or Reverend.

This story happened before I was born, and I know that we will never know the 100% truth. All that we have is what we have read or heard. I have never heard that she dumped the grits in his lap. The radio news report in Chicago said that when Al Green’s girlfriend threw the pot of grits on him his bodyguard immediately shot her to death. Think about it. He said he heard several shots and he went down stairs and she committed suicide. It’s not likely that she shot herself several times.

That's what my dad calls him, Al Grits. I feel bad for her. My dad also knew of an abused woman that waited until her abuser fell asleep once she was fed up and poured hot molasses on him. Said it was hot and the couch was in front of the open door with the screen door closed. When the molasses hit him he woke up and shot through the screen door leaving skin behind on that screen. 🤷 Actions have consequences and no one said they are commensurate to what you think you've done. I remember this story well !!!!! They did say that the woman committed suicide, but never at that time made it well known that Al Green was a woman BEATER; which he most likely was. Most men in that era thought it was ok to abuse their women and the police did nothing about it, especially if you were a Black woman. At that time (1974) most Black men did not have access to white women as they do today, but the few that did date or marry white women, would not dare treat them like they did Black women, Police would have Beat his Ass to death and still arrested him. Therefore Black men could let out their aggression on Black women, as they were the only ones they could get away with such behavior on. SAD but true!!!

Wow. That is interesting. I had no idea he was so abusive. I believe he more than likely found a woman that wasn't going to put up with his shit and that's why she showered him with hot grits. However, from what those reports say, it is highly doubtful that she killed herself. I think she hurt him and he retaliated and murdered her. Who the hell shoots themselves multiple times while attempting suicide? Something doesn't add up. Ti, you were very thorough with the information of this story. Great job!

@Greg Boyd Well, I was done with this conversation months ago. If someone puts their hands on another person that person has the right to defend themselves. I think she was stupid for not putting a bullet between his legs and between his eyes for putting his hands on her. So, I agree that she was crazy for letting him get away with that. I wasn’t born then but my dad use to sing and did a few shows with him. He spoke about how abusive he was. I’ve also heard stories from other family members in Jersey on how Mary Woodson was. And they weren’t surprised that she did what she did with the grits. It does sound suspect as far as the two gun shots. I also have a cousin that is close to Patti LaBelle and grew up with her in Philly. She spoke about how Patti gave him a taste of his own medicine one time before a show when she got a call about her sister being on her death bed. He tried to tell her she couldn’t leave to go be by her sisters side she said Patti manhandled his A** choked him out and had him up against the wall about to stab him. Growing up in the 70s Al Green was one of the most popular entertainers there was. He can have that same effect today. I've seen him do it. But back then the story was she threw hot grits on him. We didn't have tabloids back then. So we don't know all of the details. I do know he stop singing RnB to giving his life to God and became a preacher and Gospel singer as well. I think that wit fame comes drugs women etc. He didn't do no more than the next person who was young and wild did. Chaka Khan did the same things drugs and plenty of men around waiting to have sex with her. This was told straight from her mouth. It's and old story that's evening happening today. Sex Drugs and Rock n Roll

It really seems like this wasn't a big story back then. I bet that if social media had existed this would have been a bigger story and more details would have made it to the public. That happened a couple of days following the concert here in my hometown. My sisters and I were able to go backstage at the arena. I saw him and his girlfriend getting in the limo. We said that she looked mad or unhappy about something. She had on a bad wide pink hat with a coat to match with pink fur collar. When we heard about the incident, they had a picture of her with the same outfit on. I believe that things had started that night and carried on until that night.

The way I understood it at the time was that his fanbase no longer wanted to listen to his music because he mistreated his girlfriend. I understand what you mean about not knowing how to feel about him now and loving his music so much, then learning things like the things in this video. Yes, I do have more content live this already. I went through a period at the beginning of 2020 when my microphone was fried and I didn't know what the problem was, but that was when I recorded what has been my most popular video so far. It was another video like this one. And that is when got me into doing what I now call Old School Gossip on KZfaq. I spend a little time each morning replying to as many comments as I can on the old school videos. I usually take the oldest comments first. But when I saw yours, I wanted to save you some time in searching my channel. Remember, there will be a few videos with horrible sound, but I got it back on track about 5 months ago. Here is my Old School Gossip playlist. I hope that you enjoy it. kzfaq.info/sun/PLJTOm-WxzySlEyGe8lKcPx_P5e2-k2wkx Thank you so much for watching and commenting, lee!

A few years back, during the years when the Vibe magazine was popping, there was a story concerning this. Mary woodson's son said that his mother died the same night and was shot in the back. If she killed herself, how did she shoot herself in the back? He thought Al green retailatiated and killed her, paid off everybody, and was never charged.

@TisHotMessHistory
@TisHotMessHistory 4 жыл бұрын
The grits challenge that I mentioned in the video is just proof that social media has been misusing and overusing the word "challenge" for far too long. Truth be told it should have been called a grits question because that's really what it was. It was just a question asking if you think that it's correct to eat grits with sugar, or salt and butter. One of the running jokes at that time was a meme of Al Green saying "F*** them grits!" It really is sad that she committed suicide, but because of her past, I kind of feel like she just had a history of some type of mental illness. When she did finally kill herself, it seems like it was at least her 3rd attempt. Good question. I do wonder if he stopped cheating. But we know that he didn't stop beating!
@LaadeeV

Not much for gossip column news, but your presentation of this story was a cut above gossip column. You were articulate and offered news articles and interviews from others who were close to Al Green, who authored his own story which you drew from, lending more credibility to the story. I remember this story from my youth. You provided details I had not known before. I feel somewhat of a kinship with the people you cover. Although this is the only vid that I've watched (so far) I hope to get around to the others. You did a great job. I wish you much success on your channel. New subscriber.

Nice work Ti, I was 9 1/2 when this happened & like most of us young black kids Al Green was a hero just like most famous black people of that era...again, we didn't have the internet or anything but 'Tiger Beat' magazine & Jet/Ebony to give us any information that was different than what the P.R. machines of these famous people wanted us to know. From what I've heard he killed her & go away with it. Incidentally, I met him briefly walking down the street in San Francisco in either in '90 or '91 & he was amiable which doesn't mean anything in regards to this story. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you SO MUCH for this comment. I love hearing when people remember what was going on in their own lives when they hear these stories. I had never heard of Tiger Beat before. I'm thinking that these old school music stories are starting to become "my lane" here on KZfaq. I was just a kid when the incident occurred but I do remember that the Press was saying that the suicide note was not in Woodson's handwriting. Also the sheriff that came to the crime scene was a friend of Al Green. Lastly, in Al Green's book he had the audacity to say that his bodyguard may have shot this woman. That really casted a lot of doubt in my mind right there because his Bodyguard had his own firearm he would not have gotten Al Green's gun out of Al's nightstand to shoot this woman. Not only that he would not have shot the woman after she threw the pot of grits. Instead he would have been trying to shoot her while she had the pot of grits in hand attempting to throw them. Al Green is lying he did shoot this woman and got away with it. He is definitely not the first celebrity that got away with murder. Jerry Lee Lewis got away with it. William Shatner got away with it. Tony Blake got away with it. So many celebrities have gotten away with it because of their financial wealth and status and it is a crying shame. OJ Simpson was not the first!

She tried to kill herself before. She wanted to get married to him when she was already married to a guy she shot in the foot. She was violent, too. Had to be jealous of a much younger woman (21) showing up when she wanted to be his only one. After she threw the grits on him, she knew he was badly injured and she'd be arrested for assault. Did she want to embarrass her 4 kids and family by going to prison for that? The first shot was practice and the second was her suicide. I doubt Al ran in there and shot her. Who else would have? The stewardess that was trying to help him?
