Beautiful! ❤ He discovered the platform to express and be himself unapologetically with such an amazing gift. I've learned that spending a lifetime trying to earn the love and acceptance of those who refuse to or are incapable, can and will rob you of the light and energy that was meant to be directed into your talents. Live. Don't just survive. -TYH

SAMO is actually from when JMB read Huxley's 'Brave New World' Samo; the drug used to pacify the masses in the fictional future
@dfxstudios

Interesting.. Send us a source. Maybe that played a part, but most references point to it being a play of words from the saying “same old same old” that he and Al Diaz made up.

@@dfxstudiosfunny how people disappear when asked for sources after spewing nonsense. I studied literary and you can factual confirm in the writings of Huxley in a brave new world that the word used in the novel is SOMA. That is the recreational drug referred to. SOMA not SAMO! Also soma is the brand name of muscle relaxants that kids were and possibly are still taking recreationally.

Shallow minds never appreciate art. Or seek to understand it. What brings them to the artist is rumors and they still never take away anything about the actual artist but their own prejudices. Smh. Sad but it shows people mind is more on he was gay. Modern minds. People found this man from 50 cent let that sink in. Of course they not going to see this man as the artist he is. People bash him but love Freddie. They call him high but love Kurt Cobain and listen to every word. Even the artist Dali. He still gets mocked. Most artist are bullied by society. Everyone doesn’t see art or depth. So the tabloids and rumors always intrigue the small minds more.

Who? What, did you read one comment and decide that’s the general opinion? Yeah, it’s great that this wildly influential artist is part of a couple different minorities. The reason people often mention it is because of how liberating it is. It destroys stereotypes, and allows gay artists and black artists or what have you to feel seen. If that bothers you, then ignore it brother.
@theblackmoth1111

@@xim.records who ? Where ? When ? Buddy. Go to the modern time and just type in 50 cent interview where he introduced a new generation to him but only as the “ gay painter who Jay Z wants to be like “. The mockery of this artist is there. Even in this video when he is interviewed he was picked about. It broke stereotypes? For who ? If it did people would just call him an artist. Not the extra stuff. Many gay artist but stop acting like Basquiat wasn’t disrespected or mocked as an artist. The interviews are still available. Go watch it again buddy. Even the interviewer talks more about him being gay than his “ art “. When ? In many interviews. Then go watch other artist during the time and see the difference. Stop acting like the world care about artist when they are alive. There is many times they mocked him. Even to this day as the “ gay black painter “. You should watch more videos on this dude to see how it was for him not how we trying to make it like his artist journey. He even talks about this. People talk more about rumors than my art . But don’t be blind buddy. The truth be right there. Easy to miss so watch it with nothing in mind. You’ll see it and hear it as you were Jean yourself.

@@xim.records bro clearly you don’t read the comments or other interviews on the guy when he was alive. lol talking to a wall right now. Just go back and binge watch them. Then go to the comments too. It’s more than “ one guy “ bro. You choosing to pick what you see and hear. Go to the frustration interview too. Just listen bro. Just list the questions and how he responds when he try to talk about his art. This is no debate. The truth there you just choosing to over look this artist real life . To say no one cared he was gay ? Bro. Stop you not helping people see the struggles of black artist because they will be seen as everything else. Which is the point even the original commentator is saying. The likes even recognize that. You choosing not to. To be blind to this great artist life. It wasn’t easy man. He even tells us that but many people say the gay black artist was on drugs and had affairs with Andy: who cares . We talking about art. But to say people care for art is lies man. This video would have more views if people knew more about him. Instead The “ gay “ being all people know about him now is sad man. You don’t even get it. Study this man . Every interview. A quintessential New Yorker Basquiat like Andre Leon Talley in fashion knew how to play with the white scenester children of the downtown art world. The envy he generated as a black outsider with an inside straight was palpable. Unlike Faith Ringgold who could lay claim to being a black Black artist, Basquiat early on was accused of producing "white man folk art". His support did not come from the black art world, he was not trying to get a solo show uptown at Studio Museum of Harlem. Fame was the drug and there were plenty of white children to sell him even more. A connoisseur of immigrant re-invention he melted down the melting pot, such was the brilliant alchemy of his work. Unfortunately there were and still are social realities that wont melt down and weren't melting down in the early 80's. He paid a heavy price for social isolation with a drug addiction and not a beloved community.

@@butlayf-dy2sj your multiracial indie world is a fiction. A fiction that any “quintessential New Yorker is free to cultivate. In a REAL story of an artist where one comes from is where one’s cultural roots are. His artistic milieu was the downtown art scene that might have looked multiracial but the $$ certainly wasn’t. Ask Michael Stewart. … and as you sound very much like that superficial world…doubt will remain your cold comfort…

The 27 club what with the whole drug culture & I know this goes way back to jazz cats shooting dope tell me an artists 🧑‍🎨 that don’t get loaded? These new hip artists are not new far to boring go back to sugar hill gang once you play the message,put that needle on and I was moved from London to New York.

When the video opened with Jay-Z, I knew it was just gonna be another average, cliche video about Basquiat, nothing more insightful than stitching together a few clips that everyone has already seen.

Basquiat was a weird cat. Part innocent visionary, part scum bag. Anyone willing to vandalize the neighborhood with graffiti is a shameless self-promoter. Basquiat never figured out that his complaints about being labeled a "black artist" instead of an artist made little sense because if he wasn't black, the art world would probably not have labeled him at all. He may have figured this out after Warhol died, fell prey to imposter syndrome and spiraled towards his death. He sold Debbie Harry a painting for $200 bucks and a year later was selling paintings for $20,000 as fast as he could crank them out. Too much too fast for a disturbed young man.

Very well put.. I disagree with him being a shameless self promoter. The tags he put up around manhattan were anonymous. Nobody knew who or what Samo was until later on. I think him being black in the art world made him unique in a sense which made him stand out. But I think he didn't like that he was boxed in as just that.
