I was an Army Captain (Abrams tanker) when the original Top Gun came out. The way they captured the competitive nature of combat arms junior officers was amazing. As a 26 year old warfighter it didn't matter whether you were driving a jet or a 64 ton tank as fast as you could go. It was the lifestyle of living on the edge, the adrenaline rush, pride and patriotism, and the feeling of being invincible. After 30 years of service I miss it every day.

I was a Navy Flight Surgeon with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (call sign Mucous) from '89-'92 and had the privilege of flying in F/A-18's and other jet fighters during that time. I first saw Top Gun as a 4th year medical student doing a rotation at the Naval hospital in San Diego. I was inspired to join the Navy partly because both of my brothers were in the Navy who in turn were inspired to join the Navy after another great movie that boosted recruitment prior to Top Gun, namely An Officer and a Gentlemen. They both graduated from AOCS in Pensacola, and one of them went on to have a great Naval career and retire as a 2 star admiral. I wanted to fly like them but knew I couldn't be a pilot. The next best thing was to become a Flight Surgeon. I got to go through the primary syllabus in the T-34, all the water and wilderness (starvival) training. The Navy wanted their Docs to experience some of what real pilots go through and expected you to fly regularly wherever you were assigned. My first flight in a jet was in an OA-4 on low-level flight in the mountains of southern California, not unlike what you saw in the film. It was thrilling and terrifying at the same time. I went on to fly many flights in F/A-18's and other Navy and Air Force jets over 2 deployments to WESTPAC and in the Persian Gulf during the gulf war. Looking back, it was one of the greatest times of my life.

Thx for your service, Mucous! ;) Since you served with the 3rd MAW, you will appreciate my call sign, BAMBABY received bc I was born at MCAS Cherrypoint! ;) Enjoyed 28+ years w/ my hubs serving as A-6 Intruder naval aviator '72-2000 and 'birthed' a future Superhornet pilot! Finally realized my *dream* of becoming a 'hooker' when I landed on Ike Boat in a COD September 2019! BTW, if Jack is your brother, my hubs had the pleasure of meeting him on a biz trip to Jax! One of the best experiences while serving in the Corps was having the privilege of riding in the F/A-18 Hornet simulator at MCAS El Toro and helping coordinate the Airshows in the 90s. I have an unlimited amount of respect for the pilots and crew (some of the best people you ever want to meet), and was blessed to have formed great friendships with them. Nothing but love for all of our military branches, but there is nothing in comparison to the Corps and Navy!!! ;-)

Great interview. Flying really low repetitively is rare in the navy. My old man was a TPS guy and spent a year in the late 70's flying "as low and as fast as possible" around china lake in f-4s. they served as the targets testing and tuning new digital ground based radar. Two guys had killed themselves out there flying the same route a few years earlier testing the f-4. Look up SAGEBURNER

I believe one of my flights on Delta was with this captain and if it really was him it would make sense because the takeoff and landing was just so smooth. I remember an older woman asking someone next to her when will we take off? He replied we are already in the air and she was mesmerized as she probably never felt an airliner fly that nice.

Typically navy guys aren’t smooth at landing because they are used to very short runways and a hook. Of course that’s an airforce opinion.

Got to say that whole spring thing sounded a little sketchy. Kind of hard for me. Understand how having to have a death grip on a stick to keep from plowing into the ground is a good thing. Anyone who attacks the images these guys work so hard to create for the country, whether spoiled ass politician or insurrectionist really don't get it. These guys can be cocky and arrogant but they are the backbone of the nation's defense. Stationed in Alaska, I watched guys like this scramble to meet encroaching Russians not knowing if they would be getting or starting something that would have severe consequences for the country or the world for that matter. But, they never hesitated or showed fear because in their hearts they knew they were the best. I carry these memories of their efforts for many years (for the rest of my life) and I am very proud to have served with them. I have a low opinion of the liars who defame them or the country, especially, for selfish political gain.

They didn't really do all of that as shown. They should have asked them about the Tomcat roll straight after take off. It was two takes merged together, one Tomcat taking off, then the other Tomcat just flying by and rolling. It wasn't done as shown. The Tomcat would have splashed and burned if it rolled straight after take off.
