This is the 33rd tour of our series, THE REAL TOURS, in which we provide an in the moment glimpse into a place with off-the-cuff commentary completely intact! No research, no script, just RRR letting you in on their insights and observations walking the malls.
The American Dream mall in East Rutherford, NJ was a long time in the making. Originally proposed by the Mills Corporation in 2003, it has seen a number of stalled plans and ownership changes before finally opening in 2019, receiving a quite unenthusiastic reaction from shoppers.
It opened mostly empty so a lot of people made clickbait videos calling it a dead mall in 2020. This is far from the case, as this breezy and incomplete tour of the property as it stands in April 2023 shows. The mall is still in the process of filling up and only has one traditional anchor, Saks on 5th. But it is full of enough entertainment and dining options that the people have seen fit to come back to the mall.
This tour is incomplete. The mall is gigantic, 3 million square feet in leasable space. This is just a brief overview. Hopefully we can make it back much earlier in the day soon and make a part 2.

Keep in mind most of this was built in 2004 and then repainted white. The original designs that Mills corp was known for would have made this place 5x more insane.

It looks like one of the slanted floors is a moving floor because I just saw someone gliding up the slanted floor, but, it's not a straight up and down eacalator. That art statues looks so amazing. I would love to go here sometime.

Given that the mall already has no shortage of entertainment, the space beyond the closed escalators could work as a reception hall or bookable wedding venue. Maybe a movie theatre, depending on if the mall already has one and its neighboring competition. Empty 3rd floor could add a designated quiet zone (no music) as an excuse for the low traffic.

Good to see the mall so much more busier. As i saw last year a video from bright sun films about how the malls past and financial and its good to see the mall is doing alot better. It would be nice to travel to the usa to see it

I read American Dream Mall is being sued as someone got hurt on a water slide, not sure if that's true. Feel bad the person got hurt though 😢. I thought those animal riders were for little kids, not teens, at least at Park City Mall, they are for little kids. Awww, those pink and purple flowers look so pretty. This mall looks amazing and so does MOA. Gorgeous fountain 😃😍🤩❤️.

The mall has several lawsuits. They dont even pay their bills to east rutherford my town gets fucked over my this mess of a mall.

20 years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs. But we DO have American Dream and Bacon! Praise Thee Almighty!

I'm only 1/3rds of the way through this video, and damn does this blow away all the horrible stereotypes I'd previously heard about this mall till watching this. Which I'd say, are totally false about this mall! I hope this mall continues to do well, myself. And I like the designs that were used, in the court and seating and fountain areas of this mall. I wish the floor tiles weren't all white colored, but ah well.

Even tho it looks more filled in and lively, I still think this mall shouldn't have been built. I will say the luxury and flowerly part if this mall is gorgeous though.

Now I know that the way the Mall in Colombia looks now isn't the way it originally looked since you showed in that video that it used to have a fountain. So what did it originally looked like did it have the 70s or 80s design like plants and the old style flooring like the small black tile flooring like what Berkshire in PA has or no?

I have never visited this mall before 2019. The architect firm used was Cope, Lindor, & Walmsley, the same architects used for Oxford Valley Mall. This is why they have a similar look. I know what Oxford Valley used to look like, but not Columbia Mall.
