Follow scientists as they are tasked with reducing sugar in Dairy Milk without changing its taste. The obesity crisis and concerns about the amount of sugar in everyday items means that firms like Cadbury - fairly or unfairly (no one’s hiding the sugar in chocolate, after all) - are in the spotlight.

@@SUBJECTISOLDMOVEON No doubt it was uncomfortable to hear that marketing line from a hundred years ago. They should not have aired that one. But it does go to show how times have changed. That particular type of marketing wouldn't fly now. Thank goodness. But just remember, people who make or eat chocolate are not responsible for the conditions of the country where ingredients come from. That's politics and business decision making. There is no doubt you've eaten chocolate. Does that mean you have blood on your hands? No. This is not a political show. Don't make it out to be.

" Based on how much cocoa comes from West Africa, it’s likely that most of the chocolates we eat have a little bit of Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana in them. The $130B chocolate industry relies on cocoa farming for supply of chocolate’s key ingredient. Yet, many cocoa farmers make less than $1/day." Yes indeed, it won't show that part to often, so it never hurts to know the whole story. Take care and Cheers.

As the lady at the end expressed, less sugar does not mean healthy. Nothing changed, except that with more fiber comes easier restroom breaks. Essentially the new Cadbury bar is an Exlax lite bar. I worked 15 years for a dessert toppings factory. When I left there in 2016, they were producing 14 million dollars of product per week. I have worked with chocolate amongst other things.
@jesusmarywillsaveyou
@jesusmarywillsaveyou Жыл бұрын
@hugehappygrin That's not true. The growing number of obese, diabetics and sugar addicts would be the first to tell you so. Numerous studies have demonstrated the beneficial physical and psychological effects of less sugar. Its not a coincidence since mass food production began, especially sugar production, over a century ago till now a sharp and enduring rise in health problems worldwide has persisted. These food and confectionary companies are taking advantage of our ignorance about nutrition. The one subject that should be taught and made mandatory in all schools worldwide is basic 'nutrition'.

Apples and Oranges. Ex-lax is not a fiber-rich product. It's a laxative encased in something to make it more palatable (for the chocolate version). Less sugar and more fiber make for a healthier product. One can debate the benefits, but more choice is always a good thing.

Cadbury in my opinion is one of the best chocolates in the world. It's a shame that they have to change a recipe because people do not have self control. Instead of blaming the chocolate candy, how about putting the responsibility on each individual that eats too much of it. I do have to admit then when it comes to Cadbury chocolate self-control goes out the window.

@@albertawheat6832 I don't know how far $1/day goes for those who work in the cocoa industry in Africa. But the fact that cocoa is a huge international market has ensured much available work for people who live there. They are using their resources just like any other country would. How much they get paid is their own countries decisions to make. But that marketing line you mentioned, clearly made back in the day when racism towards Africans, including African Americans, was still very much in place, I found was very distasteful. I wondered why they would include that in this documentary. It was not necessary for the quality of the show and shocked me a little.

"Reasonable quantity" has always been the problem! Not going to happen. Even though it has the same calorie count, reducing the sugar content is something that is absolutely necessary in today's society. We have to wean ourselves off of sugar. In all of our foods. So even though it's not going to make you thinner, teaching your body to be ok with less sugar is very good. And of course, the product has to make money. So it has to follow the demands of it's consumers. Consumers are saying 'No' to sugar more and more. I think this product is a beautiful marriage of Science and marketing.

Ugh, Cadbury is my favourite chocolate brand, I'll be so disappointed if they fudge up the new formula! Chocolate isn't supposed to be an "everyday item" anyway! It's a special treat. Why fix something that really doesn't need fixing?

@@sn5301679 I can see what you mean some people would have an addiction to food. Especially fatty, sugary foods, but changing the recipe isn't going to stop their addiction. I think it many enable it making it seem like its okay to eat a lot of it. For example those new low calorie ice creams, people will eat the whole pint in one sitting because now they think they can since it's "healthier" but its still unhealthy behaviour. Now they may just increase their consumption of chocolate even higher! never thought of it like that. I agree self control is an issue and you're so right about the perfect market. Wow!

If you loved this video, you may also want to know that there are a number of steps to making chocolate! First, cocoa beans are picked from the tree. At this stage, the beans are white and gooey. The beans are fermented for 2 weeks and left to dry. Once dry, the beans have turned brown! The dried beans are roasted to create more flavor, and finally, made into chocolate products!

However, dark chocolate or raw cocoa nibs have 0-maybe 6 g of added sugar, if you’re buying 80-95% cocoa. I love the idea of Cadbury making a reduced sugar chocolate !! However, I also think that deviation too far from the well known packaging would be a huge mistake. New and improved, yes definitely but a big deviation in packaging will drive people away from the new product instead attracting. People don't take too well to change they want the good old tried and true chocolate they have loved for years. It may even make it unrecognizable. People could think it's something else and pass it by. The packaging could ground the entire project before it even has a chance to fly.
@Yosetime
@Yosetime 2 жыл бұрын
That's why the new packaging was made that way. Notice that as soon as you see it you recognise the brand immediately. That's the genius of good designers. And that's what they accomplished here. Maybe you didn't watch it until the end? Your concerns were exactly what they were doing and they said so.

My personal opinion: I don't understand this product at all. Chocolate was never meant to be diet food, it's a treat, thus to be enjoyed in moderation. So if that chocolate has less sugar but still all the fat and calories, then what's the point? It's just going to taste like rubbish and defeat the purpose of a treat. All these diabetic foods that you see still are high in fat and calories. Doctors and dietitians advise against them. If you're going to have chocolate, have the full whack otherwise eat fruit if you want something sweet but wish to stay health conscious.
