The Realities of Revival I: A Theological Understanding

There was a time when revival was the study and focus of careful theologians. Sadly that changed around the middle of the 19th century. Since then, careful writers have allowed the theological ground of revival to become fallow. In recent years, the study of this mysterious reality has become a more common focus of reading and request of prayer.
Because of this growing desire for revival, we are going to spend the next several episodes discussing the biblical signs and fruits of revival, along with how we are to respond when we hear reports of God visiting a particular place with revival.
In this initial conversation, John Snyder and Teddy James share some helpful works from the past and what we can do now to prepare our souls for the manifest presence of God in our midst.

As of right now we going to try limiting ourselves to six episodes. We could easily spend the rest of 2023 and beyond on this topic. But there are so many things we want to discuss we have to discipline ourselves. We are particularly excited to present you with the final episode of the series. We will have a long-time friend of Media Gratiae with us who has quite a lot to say on the topic of revival.

I would recommend you study the New Apostolic Reformation (N.A.R.). Many terms you’re using they use: manifest presence, saturation, revival,etc... Start with definition of what is revival. Very discouraging to hear the subjective emphasis and revelation outside of Scripture for information. Sorry but this is very discouraging, seeking clarity but rather than simplicity was referred to a conglomeration of historical books.

We are familiar with NAR and some of the heresies within that system. While have co-opted these words from their historical meaning, we do not feel it necessary to abandon them to those who use them incorrectly. Much rather, we want to continue using them in their proper context. If we do not do so, when people encounter these words in historical sermons, books, and pamphlets, they will assume the modern use is the same. However, if we use these words in their historical context, people can see they are one word with two very different definitions. We hate to hear this section of our conversation was discouraging to you, but keep in mind we are discussing a very weighty subject that cannot be covered in a mere 30-minute conversation. This is just the beginning of our series and so we view this as an introduction to the topic, not as a full treatment. We will continue talking about revival. In next week episode, which we have already recorded, we give two very succinct definitions of revival. Our entire third episode is on the means of revival. So stick with us. If you have particular questions about revival, please let us know. We are still recording episodes for this series and may be able to address your particular questions or concerns in a future episode. In the meantime, if you are looking for one very careful treatment of revival, we would point you to the book we recommended in the episode titled "Revival of Religion." This collection of writing can do a far more thorough job of teaching on revival than we can in a podcast.
