Had a little girl try to kick my service dog while I was at mass at St Paul’s Cathedral in New York City. The kids mother didn’t seem surprised she tried to kick my dog! The space between pews was so narrow I had to have my dog in the aisle. After 3 other people stepping on my dog the little girl was the last straw. I sat on the steps running the length of the sanctuary, they were set back from the aisle and out of the walking path. My husband and I were there with my daughters high school choir, they had performed at Carnegie Hall the night before. This was Memorial Weekend and it was a beautiful service with many military participants in the service with the Bishop. I was appalled at the hundreds of people who treated the church sanctuary like a tourist stop and wandered around during the mass taking photos, which is why my dog was getting stepped on.

@VioletHeyoka
@VioletHeyoka 5 жыл бұрын
MemoryMedic you do get used to it. I try to just keep walking and ignore the comments or I will talk to my dog, like give her a command to focus on me or heal. It is all part of the deal unfortunately. People as a whole are not too bright when it comes to things they do not understand. If I’m feeling ok and up to being social, I sometimes will answer questions and educate to help them to understand and possibly help them to respect the next team they run into. It’s not too bad... but when they people go overboard and take pictures and say awful things, it gets a little frustrating. Usually when you are at a meet up with several dogs in a very busy place the reactions are more over the top.

I will tell you this... one day as I was walking the mall with my friend and her dog, a very creepy, rude guy behind us tried RELENTLESSLY to distract my dog with kissy noises, snapping fingers, clapping and laughing really loudly. I stopped short in front of him and he almost knocked me over . I gave him the stare of death and asked him why he is being such an asshole! He looked at me like he was shocked that I stopped and addressed him at all. He was embarrassed and apologized several times. I couldn’t believe his behavior! A look, glance and even a couple awwwwwws I can deal with, but dude was kinda stalking us! Just do what I did if that happens. You’d be surprised on how they react.

I agree that a gathering of service dog teams would get attention. The dad may well be teaching his child about working dogs too (good on him!). I would also point out that Lexie is taking video of people...which makes complaining about others doing so a bit one-sided. If the arguments is that handlers can film because it's a public space, so can anyone else.

I'll be honest here. You're sitting in the middle of a store where people want to shop. You're going to get looks. Now to defend that dad with his son, it looked like he was teaching his son what was going on in that situation. How do I know what he was doing? Because I've done it with my daughter. I've stopped her to point out the situation and explain that those dogs are service dogs and they are helping their handlers cope with a situation. They are not to be touched, or talked to, but you can look. Now I get it, being stared at isn't very nice, but when most people walk around a corner and have to put on the brakes REALLY FAST or risk stepping on a dog or person, YEAH, THEY'RE GONNA STARE. At least they aren't harassing you or trying to pet the dogs. ETA: ALSO, a majority of those "STARES" you counted were just glances. You took them to a place where I GUARANTEE a majority of those people have NEVER SEEN a service dog in action. And your dogs are gorgeous. I stare at beautiful things.

kateelisaxo you wouldn’t stare at people with wheelchairs, you shouldn’t stare at service dogs who are working. they are working to aid with a disability, just like a wheelchair would for certain physical disabilities. it makes a spectacle of the service dog. it isn’t a free animal zoo for you to view, it’s an actual medical aid and they are on duty. staring could distract them and/or cause anxiety and panic to the handler. all in all it’s just really uncomfortable. plus people with service dogs don’t want to draw unwanted attention..they aren’t trying to be special. they need them for medical reasons. it shouldn’t be something people feel the need to stare at. i hope my comments make sense!

I 100% agree that if they stood there for a few seconds but some people were there for quite a bit. People need to keep in mind that it is very rude to stare, no matter what your looking at. If there were 20 people in wheel chairs passing by you, yeah you would look, but you wouldn't stand there just baffled by the fact that there are 20 people in wheel chairs. People need to understand that there are so many different people in this world, people who if know your staring at them begin to feel uneasy and could go into a panic attack. You never know, so if you see something cool, don't stare for to long unless it's there for your entertainment, which they certainly where not.

If you're in public they can, you might not like it, but it's not against the law to take pictures of others. Anyone has a right to take photographs and video in public places in the United States is protected under the First Amendment under free speech. that includes people, while it's weird and creepy, it's not against the law. Only when it's federal, or private property is it illegal, or unless specified by signs. Even being on a sidewalk, taking pictures of a government building is legal, because a sidewalk is public access, but on their initial property, you can't.

Girlllll I hear you on the stares and pictures! However.... I think at least half of them were because there were a bunch of you sitting on the floor in the middle of the store. Yes, when you need to sit and let your dog task, by all means, do it! I think we are all guilty of not listening to our dogs alerts sometimes and we really should! I wouldn’t have been able to be in that store more than 5 minutes with all the foot traffic in there, so good on you all for pushing on. My anxiety brain was screaming on the inside when I saw how crowded that store was. I’m not saying that you did anything wrong at all, as you are well within your rights to do what you did. I just think that was why you got so many looks. The general public knows very little about us or how our dogs work for us. For the most part, they are just super curious and envious as their dogs at home probably don’t listen and are not trained at all lol They are probably thinking “Omg why are all these girls with dogs sitting on the floor like that?!” “Ew!! There is gonna be dog hair all over all the merchandise” “OMG my allergies!!! How dare them bring those dogs in here!!!” “Kids, go over there and pet the dogs while I shop okay? Yeah, it’s totally fine, just go pet them!” (Ahhhhhhh) “Is that a HUSKY?!?!? OMG! I LOVEEEEE HUSKIES!!!! My best friends brothers roommate used to have one! But he’s dead now so.... *awkward silence*” “😱 OMG LOOK AT ALL THOSE CUTE DOGS IN THEIR BEAUTIFUL COSTUMES!!!!” (Yeah well... GEAR, but they don’t know that, 🙄🤭) “Are they part of the Disney street productions?? Looks Like they are about to start! Let’s get a good seat!! “ “Those poor dogs are probably so hot and don’t wanna be here, ughhhhh” (which couldn’t be more wrong, but they do seem to think/say that a lot lol) Andddd the ever so popular... “OMG those dogs are so fucking cute I simply can’t contain myself!!!! I have to touch them!!!!!!” LOL yeah... I get it!! All we can do is continue to educate the general public, one dope at a time 😂 jkjk they don’t know any better so I shouldn’t be mean. Did y’all have a good time? It’s been so damn hot out lately! I want to get out and do some out door things bring it’s the summer and my son is out of school and my SDIT can totally use the experiences. I’m just so concerned with her feet getting burned on the hot pavement. I’m looking into buying some ruffwears for her so we shall see how it goes! What are your thoughts on dog boots? I see Max was sporting some cute ruffwears! And yes, I’ve been to Disney lots of times! It’s great, but HOTTTTT and super crowded, but a must go experience for everyone at least once.
