Over the past 3 or 4 months, you guys have watched my channel grow like crazy. And I often get asked if I was excited when I started to blow up, what was running through my mind, was I overwhelmed, did I feel more pressure?
Honestly, for so long I talked about my growth in only a positive way. I didn't want to seem ungrateful because honestly, I am so incredibly grateful for every single one of you and for everything that's happened up until this point. But my channel is built off of transparency and honesty. So today, I just want to be 100% honest and share the reality of growing fast on KZfaq. What you didn't see with my growth, my struggle with comparison, chasing views, and dealing with negativity. Thanks for hearing me out. XO, Cathrin

This is one of the most honest and vulnerable videos about this I think I've ever seen. The thing you're experiencing is what I call "View Validation" and it is one of the single most damaging things to the mental health of a creator and often destroys creativity and originality. Many creators experience this, even the largest creators on this platform and you're not alone. You weren't just an accidental success Catherine, you were an INEVITABLE SUCCESS. And everything you are feeling right now is valid. KZfaq wasn't meant to become what it is, but here we are. And the most important thing anyone can do as a creator is get perspective on what they want this platform to mean for them, and how to make it "right size" in their life.

This is my favorite video of yours, Cath. This, right here, proves WHY you’re successful. You’re genuine, warm, and want to inspire others. I'm still in my first year of really using KZfaq with intention. It's very frustrating. My videos take hours and hours and hours because they're highly dependent on the moods and cooperation of my hundreds of rescued animals. I can't give them a script and tell them to smile. I'm this ➡️⬅️ close to giving up every week. 😞

Growing fast on youtube is daunting, amazing, scary and surreal for sure. I grew with over 200k subs in a year and I haven't even been close to capitalising it the way you have. I truly understand the feeling of hunting the views and subscribers. It's a tough balance for sure. Good thing that you are doing more of what you enjoy doing and not just catering the audience! Keep at it!

Cath, this is so relatable. My wife and I have been vlogging for 2 years now and I feel like everything you said is how I feel. From worrying about the haters to worrying about the numbers. I need to constantly remind my wife that 99% of the comments are great and that we can't let that 1% discourage us. I don't think most of the haters know how much their comments impact us. Anyways, I happened to click on Think Media's Live video when they hit a Million subs the other day and he went through the speakers they are going at the event and I saw you were on there! Right when he mentioned your name the comments section blew up "Yayyyyyy the CONTENT BUG!" It was pretty cool to see all the fans you have outside of your videos! Hope that's encouraging you! - Mike

Cath this video is so touching, and you don’t need to blow up to feel like this. I’ve been like a year on KZfaq and I have about 2000 subscribers and I come and go In waves from feeling like I’m a failure to try to make a better video that makes more views than the last one, and when it doesn’t I just feel like quitting. I keep checking my views and subscription count and I feel like I should be enjoying myself. I honestly never expected that KZfaq would be this hard, everyone told me Instagram was the worst to grow and well looks like I’m doing it the opposite way. Instagram is just easy for me and I created it to be able to be on KZfaq 🤦🏼‍♀️ so the point is we have to do this for fun and not for views, it’s the only way you won’t keep competing against yourself and getting hurt

But I constantly feel that I do not deserve any of it. I have also been told that I do not and that it has just been luck. I put my heart and soul into my videos and I truly do it for my viewers, but I always feel that people probably feel I am just doing it for the money. I am not. I had a similar quick growth (albeit not quite so impressive!) on my channel the last 3 months and I relate so much to the mentality of what you are saying. I think I commented on a video of yours in October saying that your recent growth had inspired me that it was possible and then December hit me. The pressure I've put on myself to make great videos and prove myself to my new audience is overwhelming (and I even struggled in the same way with the comments, feeling that not responding to everyone was betraying the community I'd built). Thanks for making this video!

Dear @TheContentBug, redoing a scene 15 times is perfectly fine if you want it to be perfect for your viewers, but doing it so you get no bad comments it's actually something that you cannot control. Haters are part of life, the more successful you are the more haters that your are going to get, but don't forget you will get many more followers. I recently started a youtube channel about medicine and I was teaching people about the coronavirus, doing my effort for getting reliable information and also learning to record in front of a camera, editing, etc.. and guess what? I received 3 dislikes, maybe my title was wrong, maybe they associated my surname with Chinese people, I don't know, so what I mean, some people will give you dislikes, because of envy or just because they are kidding, so keep doing what you love and keep doing your best, you are in the right way. P.D. Nice video.

I totally agree with your stance. I know people will post negative comments. I just laugh and know that it still helps youtube see interaction on my channel. I'm not here to please everyone and some people can't be positive at all. She better learn soon that the more she grows the more negative comments she's going to see. Don't take it personal. They don't know you and honestly wouldn't even say anything negative to you in person. It's just the dark side of social media.

Wow Cath! This video is exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been working on my KZfaq channel’s growth for almost 3 years now and even though I’ve seen growth, it has been very miniscule. Yet, the one thing that keeps me going is the fact that I’m naturally the type of person who NEVER gives up. Even if I never get to see the success I want to see on my work. Right now I’m battling through depression because I’m graduating university and I feel pressured by my parents to continue to grad school, I’ve even gotten the chance to do my interviews but to be honest my only wish in the world is to get the chance to work on being a content creator on KZfaq full time. That is my dream. I feel very scared I will make the wrong decision and turn down an opportunity to go to grad school to chase my dreams in order to take that risk to purse KZfaq full time and fail to do so but I thank you for bringing me light.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video. Your honesty, clarity and information is exactly what I need to hear right now. I've been working on my youtube channel for over 2.5 years and it seems like it's growing so slowly, and while I'm not even thinking of giving up on it, to hear you speak about how quickly yours turned for the better, gives me hope and encouragement to keep going! Thank you!

I have a very slow growing channel which I’m fine with because I am honestly having so much fun and it’s helped me through some really hard times, but I always wonder what it’ll be like when it does grow... because I really don’t want to start just doing it for views - I want to do it because I love doing it. I really appreciate hearing this side of your journey!😊

This has been happening to me. Upload my first video in November, (have 7 videos now). One of my videos popped (at 600,000 views now), which shot my channel up "overnight". But I have been working hard for the last 8 years on other things - including starting a home design website (which got me understanding about Google's algorithm). Right now dealing with the self imposed pressure of keeping my revenue up (up to $17-24 cpm). But my videos take a long time to make - so it can be discouraging. Something I am planning on doing, is to slowly start a second channel (Business History), which will take the mental and emotional pressure off of my first channel. Linus from Linus Tech Tips, talked in a video recently about how having more than one channel has helped balanced things out for him (revenue and views down on one channel, but up on another), and that could be his strategy for going forward - managing and starting multiple channels.

I've been binge-watching your videos since yesterday. I can relate so much to this one, the perceived pressure from others and from ourselves can get so scary and can take over so quickly. The negative comments also don't help at all, no matter how "strong" you are. Thanks for being vulnerable and honest with this.

I love this video so much, Cathrin. First and foremost -- you are absolutely, without a doubt, 100% WORTHY of all of the success; YOU. HAVE. EARNED. IT. FULL STOP! This video alone tells me that you are more genuine than many creators on KZfaq. And yes, you truly inspire me. It's crazy how the things that you say is precisely how I feel at times. I'm almost a year in and I have not seen the growth that I want SOO SOO badly, but when I have those days when I want to give up or I feel rejected by the "world" because I'm not blowing up, I watch YOUR videos and read YOUR Instagram posts (especially from when you were struggling to grow) and it lifts me up so much, you don't even know. Anyway, thank you -- you're beautiful inside and out!!

Thank you for this video. Omg I really needed to see this. In December I had 200 subs and one the 15th of Feb I got monitised. Since then I have got 3300 subs and over 200 000 views. I started getting 100s of comments per day. I got really overwhelmed by it all. I love what I do. But I Also started checking my analytics all day. Now I stepped back and only look every second day. I don't know where this is going tbh. I just want to keep doing what I love. So grateful. I understand exactly how you feel. Keep doing the good work.

I did the same thing with my channel, making a bunch of videos of one type because one “blew up” and lately just felt like i’m stuck, and bored. I had one with 55K views and I absolutely hate it. I switched gear with my latest video and it has 50 views but I’m immensely so proud of it. Now I realize why it’s not always a good idea to obsess over growth and numbers because if can’t enjoy what you do or sustain it, any growth is useless.

Good for your Cathrin! Do what you do because it pleases you and your honesty and genuine personality will shine through and inspire others. Most people are not creators and they have no concept of how much effort and work goes into creating and how much material ends up on the cutting room floor. "Your vibe attracts your tribe", love it! It can be easy to get obssesed with vanity metrics such as tons of views and subscribers. Of course we need views and subscribers, but we really don't need a super crazy huge amount to bring value, uplift others, help them with their problems, live out our purpose and natural gifts and make a good income as well. What we need is true fans. You can have a giant amount of subscribers, but only a smaller amount of those are going to be your true fans who like you for you and your true authentic self. These are the people that will stick around no matter what. These are the people that will buy your courses, ebooks, group coaching etc... And you won't need thousands of these true fans to be extremely happy, fulfilled and make a great income. Its about the people you serve and care for. I'm only getting started, but I know this is the path for me. I learned all of this from George Kao. Please check him out on KZfaq and give it a chance :)

I have a health & fitness channel (still really small - 31 subs), but I am not the most fit, or strongest, or have washboard abs... but I love my fitness journey ❤ It's mine and no one else can take that from me. And my voice about how I approach health and fitness deserves to be heard just as much as the next person's voice ❤ Sometimes I need to tell myself that, because the imposter syndrome voice can sneak up and try and discourage me 😜 Loved hearing this from you!
