He's also one of the suitor of Queen Victoria, but looked like she prefered her cousin more than him :). Christian IX is the father of Queen Alexandra and Empress Maria, also George I of Greece. People sometimes refers Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is third cousin from Queen Victoria, but mostly forget they are actually second cousin from Christian IX (George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, shared Christian IX as their great grandfather).

Not really true. The shifting balance of power between the alliances of Europe made war an inevitability. When Britain allied with the French, it firmly shifted the balance of power against the German alliance, and with the planned Russian modernisation of it's armies which was due to be completed in 1917, Germany believed that it's window to actually stand a chance of winning a war was running out. So when events came along which Germany could have prevented from escalating, Germany instead escalated the conflict, leading to the great war. Whether or not monarchs were in charge, or a grand mob of peasants, it doesn't change that balance of power and that closing window. It's also why even if the assassination of the arch duke of austria hungary never happened, some other mess would come along and war would start over that.

There’s a place online called BritishBabyNames and it lists the nicknames that were given to Victoria’s grandchildren such as George V being named Georgie. As for why the grandchildren have similar names, I read in a book that it had something to do with honouring Victoria and Albert. I think the book was Queen Victoria’s Matchmaking. (My first comment isn’t showing up for some reason, so I wrote a second.)
