For eight seasons, Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor could count on his next-door neighbor Wilson to offer him sage and amazingly specific advice on the hit ABC sitcom Home Improvement. So, why did Wilson never show his face?

Earl carried the gag so far that he actually had a miniature picket fence on a string around his neck during interviews. Frickin hilarious.

The theory that Wilson was the illegitimate father of one of Tim's kids and didn't want them to see his full face lest they notice the resemblance is absurd. It's only the television audience that didn't see his full face. He wasn't always hidden by the fence. Sometimes he walked toward another character in the scene with his back to the camera, or had something other than the fence obscuring his face. Some of the clips in this video show this clearly. Tim and his family could see Wilson's full face many, many times.

It’s not that he was hiding his face from them, he was hiding it from us. There are several episodes they can see his full face, but because the camera is off to the side, to get every actor in the shot, his face is partially concealed from us.

There was a Halloween episode where Wilson was in full view, although he had face paint on. And I believe he also showed his face in a wedding episode as he played the preacher? Don't remember who was married, or maybe I dreamed about it? Not sure.

After Home Improvement, my other favorite with Earl Hindman was the original feature film of 'The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3". In it, several desperadoes hijack a New York city subway train and hold it -- and the passengers -- for ransom. The film stars Walter Matthau as an inspector for the police assigned to guard the subway. When the bad guys take the train, they are all in disguise: trench coats, floppy hats, fake mustaches, and glasses. During the entire holdup you never see Earl's face!! BTW, the other three bad guys are played by Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, and Hector Elizondo. Hector, of course, was featured as Tim Allen's boss in his second series 'Last Man Standing'!

As someone just said when they did the final curtain call, he was on stage but not in character. They probably did not want his reveal to be the only thing people talked about from the meat of the episode so they just made it part of the final bows.

I remember him well in the original version of the film “The Taking of the Pelham 123” that was a great movie and Earl Hindman gave a wonderful performance. I was almost 13 years old and felt so grown up and pleased with myself, it was my 1st time getting past the ticket booth to watch a 14+ movie! What a shame, it was the very end of the movie when Robert Shaw sneezed at the last moment, the apartment door was nearly closed when Walter Mathew heard and recognized the sneeze. RIP Earl Hindman. PS, I had 5 dollars and I saw the movie, got popcorn, a drink, Milk Duds and Ju Jubes and still went home with change in my blue jeans pocket!
